Exploring a Senate run, Estabrook says "no comment" on Iraq

By MAX PIZARRO
PoliticsNJ.com

When it comes to the Iraq war, potential U.S. Senate candidate Anne Estabrook has no commentWhen it comes to the Iraq war, potential U.S. Senate candidate Anne Estabrook has no commentI steered the broken-down clunker off Route 22 and into Kenilworth, staring grimly at the temperature gauge as it wobbled toward the red-zone.

"Go ahead," I said through gritted teeth. "Just go ahead and do it."

If the car was going to have a meltdown, I wanted it to happen before I reached Anne Estabrook's Cranford office, where I was going to ask the millionaire businesswoman about the War in Iraq.

Arriving unannounced is one thing, but pulling up in a billow of smoke and trailing a clutter of automobile parts would make for a decidedly inauspicious entrance, particularly in the presence of the chauffeur-ferried Estabrook.

A GOP fund-raiser who's made a lot of money in real estate and never held elected office, she wants to run for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg. When I called the prospective candidate and left a message on Saturday, her chief handler, Larry Weitzner -- not Estabrook -- returned my phone call to confirm that she is indeed forming an exploratory committee - and that she doesn't have a statement about Iraq.

Scanning the headlines on Monday morning, I noticed the latest casualties coming back in body bags. There were over 100 dead American soldiers in Iraq in April and that makes the war's bloodiest month this year. The Democrats are calling for a deadline to withdraw troops. The president's dug in against "retreat."

My question for Estabrook is simple: What's her position on the war? It was the same question I put last week to GOP Assemblyman Michael Doherty, who also wants to challenge Lautenberg.

I called Estabrook several times and there was no answer Monday. I called her office directly and told them I was looking for her. Still no reply.

So I drove up to the offices of Elberon Properties in the Union County surburn, choking and sputtering but getting there ultimately. And giving the car a drink in grateful triumph, I called Estabrook again and still there was no response. I called her beach house in Spring Lake and the cheerful voice on the other end told me she wasn't home but that she would call me back at the end of the week.

I was sitting there in the office park driveway reading the sports page in the Ledger, when I saw this dark sedan pull up and stop in front of a sign marked "Mrs. Estabrook." I knew that was her spot because I had toyed with the idea of parking there myself. It had been the only empty space in the lot, and I figured if I went to sleep I could count on the indignant blast of a car horn to wake me up.

But here was the car, and it had to be the car by the way it stood there unchallenged in that clearing marked for the boss.

And trudging through a no-man's land of leaf-blowers and lawnmowers, I went up to the car where the driver stared straight ahead behind glasses, and Estabrook sat in the back seat on the phone. The noise from the back-pack clad worker bees was so loud I could barely get out the word "Iraq," before I found myself wondering, Do I rap on the window? Gesticulate wildly? Nah. So I walked inside the office building and sat down and waited. And waited. And 20 minutes later the businesswoman emerged from her car.

When she entered the building I stood up and introduced myself in the hallway and she was a flurry of friendliness as I told her how important this debate on Iraq is and wondered if she supports the troop withdrawal.

"I don't have a comment," she said. "I have a conference call, very important."

I said a war resolution is the subject of debate in the Senate, and asked what is her position as she made a beeline for the staircase and was halfway up the steps when she said, "I'm leaving for California in an hour and a half. I'd be happy to talk to you at the end of the week."

"But you are running for Senate?" I asked her.

"I'm exploring," she corrected. "And I'll be happy to talk with you at the end of the week."

"Do you have any statement on Iraq?" I asked.

"No comment," she replied.

And a few minutes later I was back on the highway coaxing that old machine southward, but not before marveling at how Estabrook, standing at the top of those stairs, seemed simply to vanish.

Not fit for Prime time

Money cannot buy conviction and credibility. It may get you on Oprah. The Global war on terror and the war in Iraq and mid east policy will be the cornerstone of our legacy for generations. Both liberals and Islamic extremists are trying to drag our Republic back to the 15th century. If she can't articulate this issue as a Republican she has no business in public life, period.

She's not the first

In essence, she is doing what most politicians (John Edwards notwithstanding) already do: waiting to speak with a phalanx of advisors before coming to a policy position. I've seen many a politician from both major parties do what Estabrook did tonight, but that doesn't excuse her not answering a question of whether she supports a troop withdrawal.

The illegitimate and resource-depleting war in Iraq has plagued this country for years, and Bush and co. have no game plan and no end in sight. Any politician who argues that we should not put any pressure (benchmarks) upon the Iraqis, should maintain our position as a mediator between warring factions, and not make any concrete plans for withdrawal, is making a major error in policy. Let's see how far Estabrook and other N.J. GOP senate candidates run, if at all, from Bush's failed Iraq policies.

04/30/07 10:39 pm

Ironic

It is the Democrats like Hillary Clinton that are blaming themselves for supporting the War in Iraq based on a quick heat-of-the-moment decision, now they want people like Estabrook to immediately make a decision on what where we should go in the War. She's running for 2008, not tomorrow, she is only responsible for thinking things through.

WEAK LEADERSHIP FROM THE BEGINNING

This has been the biggest story, affecting all our citizens, for over four years now. How can she consider running for this great office and not have an opinion?  I am so sick of politicians running from the great issues of our day.  What would our Founding Fathers think?

04/30/07 11:04 pm

Our founding fathers would think:

Don't just throw out talking points like Lautenberg will, find a solution!

04/30/07 11:37 pm

Hmm...let's see. A leftwing

Hmm...let's see. A leftwing journalist ambushes a Republican who is not even a candidate on her way to a meeting. He wants a detailed answer NOW! How dare she not answer! Doesn't she know he's THE PRESS? Since he can't attack her position he attacks her for not telling him what it is! If lefty journo's start the campaign whacking Estabrook then it's obvious we Republicans have a good candidate. Very professional of the reporter too I must add. You'll be working for the New York Times in a year (if it's still publishing that is).

04/30/07 11:47 pm

What a liberal jerk this reporter is

Nice job. Ambush someone on the way to a meeting to get 4 words out on an important issue like Iraq. Someone who isnt even announced she is running And how hackneyed and liberal is the story line about the beat up car. Pity me-Max, the hack

04/30/07 11:59 pm

THE ISSUE...

Very typical of GOP supporters to attack someone's character and not focus on the ISSUES- that being Iraq.

There is no bigger issue facing this country and no more important issue for New Jerseyans in the next general election than Iraq.

Did I mention Iraq? Becuase whoever the GOP candidate will be must be strong in their convictions and understand foreign policy- this is after all the U.S. Senate- not Trenton... Estabrook's votes will decide how/when we end this war- so let's get serious here and get to know the issues and the person who has "no comment" on THE issue... sad really.

05/01/07 12:50 am

Nothing Liberal About It

Dave -- He just asked an honest question about the most important issue facing our nation right now. It wouldn't have mattered what her opinion was -- we could have debated that for months.... but at the very least she should have had an opinion. Even people who are wrong must be given a certain amount of respect because they have the courage, gumption and intellect to have an opinion. This shows a lack of all three, which is truly disheartening.

Two very important things we have learned from this article. 1) Estabrook is nowhere near ready to run for town council – let alone US Senate and 2) Larry Weitzner should know better. He has been the consultant for legitimate … well, ok, somewhat-legitimate candidates in the past. The fact that he has jumped so early, and so publicly, onto Estabrook’s campaign shows how dismal this field really is.

05/01/07 12:50 am

I think no comment is a

I think no comment is a pretty typical answer when your ambushed by a reporter, unless you're Chuck Schumer. Then you can give a 2 hour non-answer even when ambushed. Still she should probably have something to say on the war, its not like it started yesterday.

05/01/07 1:17 am

She is wrong...

Even if she did not have a full position on the issue, she should have at least said, "I don't support a timetable," or "I think redeployment is a good idea." This just reeks of elitist arrogance on her part.

05/01/07 4:25 am

PERFECT

Just what the GOP needs, a candidate reaching out to the "common man" who gets driven to work!! Isn't there a term for that ? Oh yea, it's called a LIMOUSINE LIBERAL !!!!

05/01/07 5:36 am

Driven to work?

Two questions:

Was she wearing her seat belt and do you think that disqualifies someone from being Governor or only Senator?

05/01/07 6:52 am

Ambushed? Are you kidding?

Max followed up his UNANSWERED phone calls with a personal visit. That's good reporting. Sounds like Ms. Estabrook wants to get her story straight before announcing she's officially a candidate. Iraq is the biggest national issue and she's already dodging it. Go away already and don't bother running. It's no wonder the Republicans are clueless in New Jersey. Get yourselve's a candidate with balls one day why don't you.

05/01/07 7:32 am

She should run as a Democrat

Her position on the war (or, more appropriately, lack thereof) is more reflective of Democrat "plans" than Republican. A simple response could have done (as Pulaski points out); every person you encounter can say their position on the war and what course they think America should take. Of course, that is except Democrats and liberals (liberal Republicans included) .... they need to see which way public opinion blows before they can say what they "believe."

She appears to be another example of someone who would attempt to govern based upon public opinion and polls. That is not a leader, that is not someone fit for public office, and it is indicative of someone who is more interested in what the public perceives their position to be rather than what they believe is in the Country's best interest. This response is something every Republican voter should remember from now until the primary. It shows she will easily cave to the Left and will sell our countries future for personal political gain. This is consistent with the philosophy of the Left and, as I said, she should run as a Democrat.

New owners poltical bias is evident

The new owners political bias is evident. The reporter says he cares about Iraq and got Doherty's view, but doesnt print it. He says that a big vote was taking place, but politicsnj doesnt report it. Why? He wants to sandbag the GOP's strongest candidate. Who is the new owner of politicsnj (Kushner) and who have they supported so generously? Maybe thats why they dont bother reporting on Iraq, the pretense of the sandbag.

WAR IN IRAQ AND GOP SENATE CANDIDATE

YOU CAN TELL HER ALL ABOUT IT! http://costofwar.com/index-public-education.html

05/01/07 8:56 am

more of the same

Journalism used to be such a respectable occupation. Why do reporters think readers care about THEM? Reporters should basically be invisible. It is fair to go and ask the question. It is even fair to go and ask unannounced. It is sophomoric to report the event as if what you did was unique and in any way important. I like my reporting straight up, not with an umbrella and a straw.

05/01/07 9:01 am

She is an empty suit

Pizzaro is doing a public service by exposing this Silver Spoon, tax shelter-loving nothingburger.

05/01/07 9:23 am

Can you believe this reporter?

He has the nerve to ask someone that's preparing to run for office if they are are actually running for office. And then he has the nerve to ask about the biggest issue of our time (the Iraq war). Eastabrook has every right to issue a no comment on the Iraq war. That's what I look for in a candidate. I'm looking for a candidate that when it comes to a war that may or may not be the biggest foreign policy debacle that this country has ever faced, this candidate will look the public in the eye and confidently say, "No comment." Now that's what I call leadership.

05/01/07 9:32 am

She's Toast....

After four years of this war, anyone who has "no comment" on Iraq is unqualified to hold public office.

Either she honestly doesn't have a position yet; in which case she's been living in a self absorbed bubble; or she has views/opinions/ideas that she doesn't want to share because she's in the process of canning them to fit into a focus grouped/poll tested rhetorical container.

Both scenarios knock her out of the box......and that's sad, because I suspect that she's probably against "staying the course"; but is looking to frame it in such a way as not to overly offend Bush loyalists who are hellbent in "supporting the President".

Oh well, and I thought that maybe the Republicans had found a fairly decent potential candidate.

I'm sure Lonegan will be glad to run. At least he'll have a public position on Iraq, I'm sure.

05/01/07 2:29 pm

What did you expect??

She has no position. She doesn't know all the facts. However, I have yet to see one democrat nationwide that actually has a PLAN to fight terrorism, other then to wave the white flag, bring everyone home and play defense, hoping that the next attack won't kill more than 3,000 people. The terrorists hate us, they hate our freedom, our way of life, EVERYTHING. For them, this is a war of attrition and they have been fighting it for more than 30 years. You think all the terroist attacks in the past were isolated incidents? You can't fall back and say "let's negotiate". How can you negotiate with people who have no value for human life??? If we pull out, they will be emboldened and they will come here again. Bush hasn't done everything right, however, having NO PLAN is not the answer. Where is the democrat plan? The Democrat plan is "Bush is a bad person and the war is bad." OK..so what next????? This is a multi-generational war, and refusing to see that will contribute to more deaths. This is their jihad.

05/01/07 6:27 pm

Communism

When Reagan tried to end the Soviet Union, everyone said he was crazy, that there was no way to collapse a block that covered almost half the world. But he understand that the enemy was evil and had to be destroyed, so he did not give up.

There are always weak liberals who think we can appease or ignore the enemy, but it is our job as Americans to outvote that faction and defend this nation.

05/01/07 8:03 pm

NOT REALLY MOVED

either way.

I think this exchange just typifies the political dynamic between politicans in the press-- it's as dependable and unchaning as any law of physics. Reporters will be pricks because it's the best way to get a name for yourself. Candidates will defer from answering questions until they have perfectly crafted, market-tested messages ready in their holster. If they don't answer with canned, well-honed messages, the aforementioned pricks, who like to pretend that they would lavish them with respect and adulation for being direct and honest, would really just take their sincerity and chew them alive. At this point, I have no problem with Pizzaro's question or Esterbrook's response. She knows she has to answer this question. He know she has to answer this question. And she will. No story here.
