Five months after Beck, Karcher seeks Bryant's ouster

State Sen. Ellen Karcher’s call for the resignation of two fellow Democratic legislators is an election year gimmick, according to her Republican opponent, Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck.

Karcher’s statement today calling for the resignations of Sharpe James and Wayne Bryant comes five months after Beck first called on her to seek Bryant’s ouster, and four days after Democratic State Chairman Joseph Cryan gave her cover by urging the two indicted Senators to quit.

Since September, Beck has issued regular press releases pressuring Karcher and the Democratic leadership to take disciplinary action against scandal-plagued Senate colleagues. Even before Bryant was indicted in March, Beck had already made three bids for Bryant’s removal from the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and to pressure him to step down.

Beck said that while Karcher ran for Senate on an ethics platform – she upset then Co-Senate President John Bennett in 2003 -- she failed to stand up for those principles once she reached Trenton, preferring instead not to rock the Democratic Party’s boat.

"These are not the actions of an ‘ethics champion.’ These are the actions of a pseudo-reformer who is unwilling or unable to stand up to her party bosses,” said Beck in a press release.

Karcher bristles at the suggestion that she only spoke up after Joe Cryan provided political cover, while her campaign noted that she was the first state Democratic Senator to call for the resignations.

“Believe me, I have not taken the lead from anybody else ever in this area and to suggest otherwise is just absurd,” said Karcher.

Karcher developed a strong reputation for ethics reform during her term as a councilwoman in Marlboro. In 2004, when she was still on the town’s council, she wore a wire and recorded Marlboro Municipal Utilities Authority Chairman Richard Vuola offering her a bribe, producing evidence that helped lead to his indictment in a corruption case that ensnared former Marlboro Township Mayor Matthew Scannapieco. During her term on the council, she reportedly received death threats for questioning the mayor’s acquiescence to developers, it turned out, had paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars.

She used that corruption busting as a cornerstone of her state Senate campaign. Once she reached Trenton, she passed some major ethics reform legislation, including a ban on dual office holding that has been criticized by Republicans for grandfathering in incumbents who already hold two positions. Currently, she has two bills awaiting the governor’s approval -- The Public Corruption Profiteering Penalty Act and a companion bill that establishes corruption of public resources as a crime.

Karcher said she resisted calling for Bryant’s resignation because she did not want to prejudge him, as opposed to her time on the Malboro council, when she was a witness to the crimes and called for officials’ resignations immediately. But James’s indictment was the tipping point, she said. The charges that he used the city’s credit card to pay for his own personal entertainment and travel expenses was more cut and dry and, combined with Bryant’s indictment, was too much to bear.

“I went to Trenton to clean up corruption, and it’s like moving a mountain of crap. It’s very frustrating,” said Karcher.

Karcher Chief of Staff Mike Premo argued that Beck does not apply her ethical standards equally to Republicans and Democrats, noting her silence on cost overruns in the renovation of the Monmouth County Hall of Records.

“Leadership is about calling out wrongdoing whenever you see it, not just when it’s in the opposing party, and that’s where Jennifer Beck fails the smell test,” said Premo. “If they want to make the debate about ethics reform and Ellen’s record on ethics reform, we are very happy to have that debate. Because there is nobody in the state of New Jersey that has done more for ethics reform than Ellen Karcher.”

But Beck said that Karcher’s admirable record on ethical reform ended with her election to the state Senate.

“She has failed on this issue of ethics on multiple occasions, it’s quite disingenuous that she’s speaking out now,” said Beck. “As a councilwoman in Marlboro Township, she certainly took strong action. She became a senator, went to Trenton and lost her conviction.”

Yeah, Election Year Gimmick

Because there are so many voters out there paying attention to politics in July. Give me a break

All Talk

If only the Democrats weren't all talk on the corruption issue. If they had supported the Assembly Blueprint for a Corrupt Free New Jersey, James and Bryant would be long gone.

07/20/07 4:40 pm

Wake Up!!

Karcher cleaned up one of the most corrupt towns in Monmouth County and she has set the agenda for reform in NJ. She took on corruption on both sides of the political spectrum and not just when it was the "political" thing to do.  Name one person Beck put in jail. Reference a bill she's passed. Tell me when she's stood up to corrupt Republican bosses.  You can't because she's done jacksh**t but whine and moan. Beck can lob insults all she likes but she is ineffective and seriously outclassed.

07/20/07 7:41 pm

Karcher is a joke.

Is she still wearing a wire on the senate floor? Who does she think she is, Frank Serpico? Beck is going to crush her.

07/20/07 7:49 pm

She could be

That's the powerful thing about Karcher.  She gets things done without grandstanding and constantly self promoting.  People all over this state including some very powerful Republicans admire her quiet courage, and committment to the big picture.  She's in for the long haul and they know it.  Why do you think Beck can't raise money?  Beck rants and raves and perpetually looks looks like she is ready to bust a vein. Her press releases only highlight her inadequacy.

Karcher Grand Stands

She was grand standing today when she released a press release saying that James and Bryant should step down. Bryant was indicted FOUR months ago. Where was Karcher then? My guess is that she had to wait for one of her superiors in the leadership to act before she could.

07/20/07 8:29 pm

Come clean. Who's keeping Beck in the corner?

Karcher took on bosses across the state from Norcross and Lynch (her primary fight)- to Ferriero (backing weinberg).  Beck has been silent on the Republican corruption in Monmouth county.   The fact is that James and Bryant are staying put.  It shows a lot more courage and leadership for Karcher to stand up against these guys than for Beck to release her silly statements.  When Beck calls out the crooks on the Monmouth Freeholder Board then she can talk about leadership.

Eric, sounds like you got issues

with independent powerful women??? Anything you wish to share? Early childhood trauma? Attachment issues? It's interesting that when a woman takes on the power stucture as effectively as Senator Karcher has that insecure men (and the women they love ie: Beck) get so venomous.

07/20/07 9:07 pm

Eric,

Any chance you drive a big car?

07/20/07 9:11 pm

All I know is

Damn these ladies need to get a room.

Right next to them will be Asselta and Van Drew.

Let's play nice boys and girls.

I swear just reading these press releases is funny.

Karcher to Beck: I will slap you if you don't get off my back monkey.

Beck calls out Karcher for threatening to slap her and cries foul.

Van Drew to Asselta: What are you even saying anymore?

Asselta to Van Drew: You sold my toll road damnit!

07/20/07 9:24 pm

So wrong...

Beck may actually threaten to get a bill passed. Beck is afraid of toll road privatization cuz it will take the fun out of DWIs. Van Drew and Asselta: "Mom he looked at me funny."

07/20/07 9:40 pm

Backwardsjersey...

Beck seems like the violent one.  I hear she hangs with a tough crowd. Just ask her ex- husband.   Karcher is a lady.  Beck looks like she wants to rumble while the worst Karcher will do is remind you to use your "indoor voice" and threaten a  "time out."

07/20/07 9:52 pm

See I always thought

Karcher was the tougher one, I mean have you seen her NJ leg picture? There's a woman I wouldn't mess with.

Beck may be more violent though...after 2 years of constantly being strongarmed and pushed around by the Dem women in the Assembly. Why else do you think she's trying to move up?

You definately get the feeling Jen was one of those girls left out of trips to the mall and coffee talk.

07/20/07 10:29 pm

Beck: Girl interrupted

She acts like a petulant child. That may have been a come on when she trolled the halls and offices as a gun for hire lobbyist, but now it's showtime and her act is OLD!

the sad state of politicsnj

This thread is the perfect example of what this site has become. It used to be a place where inisders and people with real knowledge of New Jersey politics would come and discuss issues, campaigns, whatever. Even the bombastic rhetoric had a ring of truth because it was posted by people who were somewhat knowledgeable. Now its populated mostly by 23 year old staffers who dont know their ass from first base.

The bottom line is this: For Ellen Karcher to call for Bryant to resign now, 4 months after he was indicted, is extraordinarily stupid and transparent in and of itself. The fact that Beck has been calling for him to resign since last year makes her look even stupider. And for her campaign to issue press releases where her campaign manager attempts to equate the Queen of Ethics' silence for the better part of a year on the presence of known criminals in her midst, with Beck's failure to comment on a county construction project which has had cost overruns, is just ridiculous and amateurish. It begs the question- if they react this badly to peripheral stuff in the middle of July, whats going to happen when the fur starts to fly closer to the election?

And for the children commenting on Beck's personality: kiddies are you serious? Ellen Karcher is pretty much despised by everyone she's ever encountered in New Jersey politics. The Senate Majority staff hates her. Her fellow Senators, on both sides of the aisle, think she's a nitwit. Monmouth County Democrats cant stand her. Ask her formers staffers what they think of her. Ask elected officials in Monmouth County what they think of her. It's pretty much unanimous.

You know what they say about people in glass houses and all that....

07/21/07 9:34 pm

Beck is such a loser....

and that will become even more evident in November when Senator Karcher wipes the floor with her. Karcher has proven she's an advocate for ethics reform. She lives it and has for years. Lets ask Beck about family values and see what she has to say.....

07/22/07 10:18 am

Frankly, I Like The Idea That...

Karcher may be "despised" by many of the folks maintaining the status quo in NJ politics!

That's a GOOD thing! LOL

That means that, if she had ever slipped up; she would have been nailed to the cross by now. Yet here she is, running a competitive race for state senate! The woman must have something on the ball, eh?

Maybe she should be our next governor?!

The Government of the State of New Jersey, belongs to the citizens; NOT the monied special interests who have, pretty much, hijacked it!!!

Karcher is a joke.

It's bad enough she needs to trade on the old man's name for political credibility, it's another when you need to play this charade of "independent reformer" when all she really is just another vote for the Democratic caucus. Beck will win easily.

07/23/07 7:36 pm

Beck Will "Win"? Easily?

There's positive thinking, which is a good thing; and there's delusional fantasy projection.

Whoever wins, it'll be a closely fought race...I like Karcher you like Beck; that's fine...but don't let your bragadoccio get the better of your common sense.  This one will be fairly close.

agreed with Lento

Yeah I support Beck, but this definately won't be a win easily type race. This is going to be really tight.

Frankly, if Beck loses, it's nobodys fault but her own. I'm not in the district but I have trouble thinking she's a really strong legislator and candidate. Then again, I don't think Karcher's much better.

I just want to see an evened up senate, it'd make budget season really interesting that's for sure.

07/24/07 12:16 am

Karcher Attached to Norcross Nipple

Let's see... Karcher votes to support leaders like Codey who have jammed tyhrough McGreevey's budgets, installed Wayne as budget chairman, blocked ethics refrom, funnelled suburban money to urban areas for "schools" (I.e. wasted money to let trash like Assemblyman/Super. Epps fly to London and munch on steaks while people push their belongings in shopping carts in his district)...oh... anbd bottle up Beck bills that would reverse sopme of this garbage. I see... but it's Beck's fault her bills won;t pass? It's Karcher's fault... and all the other trash like her who place urban warlords at the switches of State government. Karcher is as good for Monmouth as lead paint is for an idiot.

07/24/07 7:56 am

ImWithStupid...

should change your name to justplainstupid. Beck has done nothing...nothing but attach herself to other people's bills. Never put up anything of substance. Asks to attach her name to Mike Panters reform bill, and then bashes it...after she was put on as a sponsor. Very ethical lady there....and then you should ask her about family values and she where she stands....lets see if she is as hypocritical as she looks. Even the APP, who is no friend to the dems, has ripped her for continuing to send out garbage mail to constituents long after the election was over. They asked her nicely to just get on with what she was elected to do and to stop the junk mail bashing everything she could. She's as shrill as they come...and yes, you are "justplainstupid"
