Ramsey - Independent Congressional Candidate for the Fifth, R. Matthew Fretz released the following statement regarding passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006.
"I am stunned. Today, the Senate voted to give the terrorists what they really wanted. I wasn't surprised by Representative Garrett's vote for torture yesterday. I'm absolutely stunned by Senators Menendez and Lautenberg's support.
Our enemy uses fear in pursuit of their ultimate goal of undermining liberty. I believed in no way, shape or form would a bunch of terrorists ever achieve victory over the principles and values of our nation. We've always been a stronger nation than that, defeating all challengers, while maintaining our belief that freedom is stronger than fear. Yet tonight, I was proven wrong.
The worst part about this is not that every man and woman in our armed forces is now at a greater risk of being tortured if captured; or that innocent individuals may be held indefinitely without any recourse to challenge the validity of their captivity; or that the President will alone get to define what is and is not acceptable forms of torture contrary to our treaties, values and traditions.
The worst part about all of this is the undeniable fact that the terrorists succeeded in their ultimate goal of undermining liberty, and we handed them victory on our own Senate floor. Due to fear of another attack, our Senate and House of Representatives have abandoned some of the most basic principles of our society. This is not standing up against the terrorists; this is lying down in the fetal position.
It is a tragic day in American history. I hope voters remember this on Election Day."
