Jersey City Councilman Steven Fulop is expected to announce today that he will endorse Louis Manzo for State Senate, and Nicholas Chiaravallotti and Shelia Newton-Moses for State Assembly in the 31st district Democratic primary. Fulop represents Ward E on the City Council.

Not shocking to see Fulop bucking the J.C. powers. I imagine Healy & the gang will make a major move for his council seat next time around. He's been a thorn in Healy's side.
JC Powers?
Do you mean the same well funded powers that Fulop beat handily to win that council seat in the first place?
Schundler-Lite
These two, Fulop and Manzo, deserve each other.
Fulop, like Sweet Lou, it's all about himself. Fulop's council win was against a weak incumbent who never spent time in or cultivated his own "demographically changing" ward.
Fulop is no Bret Schundler, not even close. He needs to recognize he never won his council seat, the incumbent- Jr Maldanado lost it.
Fulop's Doing a Good Job
He's well liked in his ward, the residents think he is doing a good job. He is out there meeting with people and is visible and he's trying new ideas. Fulop's not a typical JC politician. He's one of the comers in statewide politics.
No Surprise Here
Steve Fulop also supported both Joe Vas and James Geron last year against Albio Sires in the June Primary so he's definitely no friend of the establishment.
Fulop will be fine in JC because the damage Bret Schundler inflicted on the HCDO there can still be felt. Furthermore, I could see Schundler taking Healy on in '09 and Fulop aligning with him.
With the HCDO as wounded as it is, this may be Bret's golden opportunity to get back in the saddle.

Good Choice
Lou Manzo is the voice of the middle-class in NJ and has been a bigger thorn in Cor$ine'$'s side than most tepid Assembly Republicans. He needs to be in the Senate to make sure the retarded agenda of Corzine and others is stopped. If Schundler doesnt run in 2009, Fulop should run and will win.
Fulop in 09
How about Fulop running no matter what for mayor? He's a better choice than Schundler.
Fulop is Toast
Fulop was the well funded machine when he won the council seat a couple years ago. Manzo poured a lot of money and typical Manzo-esque tactics to help Fulop win that seat by a a very close margin. He also had the backing of the Cunningham family. Now he asked whom would back him for Mayor next election and Cunningham was honest and Manzo promised him the sky. Big surprise he is now backing Manzo.

One or the Other
If Steve Fulop has learned anything from Lou Manzo, it's that he would be wiser to align himself with Schundler rather than oppose him.
Schundler can beat Healy in a head to head race and all Fulop's candidacy would do is take votes away from Healy.

Reading the tea leaves....
or just reading the Jersey Journal gives me the impression that Bret isn't interested in running for mayor again. My guess it's Fulop vs. Healy one on one and given the grassroots work he has been doing citywide, Fulop is a serious threat to the mayor. Keep in mind -- every time Healy increases property taxes or yet another person gets murdered in JC, Fulop gets more popular. At this rate Fulop will be the Jack Kennedy of Jersey City in 2009.
Jersey Journal
The Jersey Journal is an absolute dishrag. It's a mouthpiece for the Hudson County party bosses, much like Granma is a mouthpiece for the Castro Regime in Havana. Therefore, it would only be fitting that they would attempt to say that Bret doesn't want to run without actually asking him first.
Even if he hasn't shown any interest now, anyhting can change in two years.

JJ
Few people in the HCDO would consider the Journal a "mouthpiece" for anyone except Brian Stack and Lou Manzo.
Bosses
Notice, that's why I said party bosses rather than HCDO. They are a mouthpiece of the bosses in charge, whether it's Brian Stack, Bob Menendez, etc. Those of us who know better and don't buy Stack's song and dance realize that he is just the new boss overthrowing the old boss.
Love that mugshot of Frank by the way! As you know, Frank is a dear friend of mine.;-)

Fulop's track record - a BIG ZERO!
All these star struck yuppies in JC Ward E have to look at the facts about their new political idol. Since he has become councilman, Fulop has endorsed other candidates from Congress to Board of Ed as well as helped within these campaigns - They all lost, there is Fulop's endorsement track record - a Big Zero!
Manzo, the 4 time loser for JC Mayor, deserves the endorsement of Flip Flop Fulop.
Right move
Fulop backs Manzo,Manzo backs Fulop in 09.It will be a replay of the 89 race where sitting mayor Cucci could not even make the runoff. The african americans were never going to back fulop in 09.They will have there own candidate and will be in the runoff with Fulop. With two state senators behind him fulop will drive healy nuts,or at least naked and drunk. For a young yuppie reformer fulop has some old time operatives that know how to fight the HCDO.
