(TRENTON) - The General Assembly today passed legislation Assemblymen Thomas P. Giblin and John S. Wisniewski sponsored to designate Route 23 as the "Robert A. Roe Highway."
"Congressman Robert A. Roe was a man ahead of his time," said Giblin (D-Essex), a member of the Assembly Transportation and Public Works Committee. "His efforts brought billions of federal transportation dollars to New Jersey and made much of our highway system what it is today."
The Giblin/Wisniewski measure (A-3531) would designate the entire length of New Jersey Route 23 as the "Robert A. Roe Highway" and designate $2,500 for appropriate signage.
"Congressman Roe was a true public servant and a transportation expert," said Wisniewski (D-Middlesex), chair of the Assembly Transportation and Public Works Committee. "It is altogether fitting that we remember his tireless advocacy for our state's transportation network by naming a portion of it after him."
The measure passed 79 to 1. It now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
