Giuliani headed to Cape May to stump for Asselta, GOP ticket

GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani will visit Cape May County on October 1 to campaign for Republican legislative and county candidates.  He'll be at Congress Hall, which was the Summer White House when Benjamin Harrison was President from 1889 to 1893.  Giuliani's decision to visit Cape May, which features one of the most competitive State Senate and Assembly races of the cycle, is a feather in the cap of GOP County Chairman David Von Savage, an early Giuliani supporter and a driving force in the state GOP's decision to make New Jersey a winner-take-all county -- something that appears to strongly benefit Giuliani.

fundraiser?

Is Congress Hall owner (and Republican friend-of-McGreevey) Curtis Bashaw hosting the event? or are they just renting out the space?

He's David's cousin. You

He's David's cousin. You tell me.

I wonder how those

I wonder how those firefighters that Asselta insists he honors feel about his support for a candidate they vehemently despise and feel abandoned by.

MENENDEZ vs. GIULIANI

So the Republicans are bringing in Giuliani while according to the Press of Atlantic City today, Van Drew had a party at his house which was attended by Bob Menendez.

I wonder how all the residents of the First District who overwhelmingly rejected Menendez last year must feel about Van Drew having the second most (after Bush) unpopular politician in New Jersey at his house...

Commonsensenj...you are just regurgitating talking points of moveon.org. Rudy has more support from rank and file firemen than any other candidate. It's the unions that don't like him.  Grow up.  This is a huge hit for the Republicans in the First District whether you like it or not.

Let's ask Jeff...

After all, he's the only firefighter in the race.

09/18/07 1:37 pm

COMMONSENSENJ ARE YOU SERIOUS?

You are absolutely the only one who posts so strongly in defense of Van Drew.

It's disgusting.

Also, you know things that other regular posters (ie: not insiders like you) like who owns Congress Hall, etc.

You are just a joke and so is your candidate.

He is probably a wannabe fireman who shows up at social events and hasn't gone to a fire in years.

Van Drew is just taking a beating right now and your pathetic headline grabber of a candidate can't handle it.

Sorry

Giuliani-is not supported by rank and file firemen and women. As a matter of fact that is not even measurable. Unions do not like Rudy for good reason.  However, this is a big hit for Asselta et all.  Jeff is in a tough spot, he can't exactly bring in Hillary and expect it to have the same impact.  Jeff is perhaps the best loved Democrat in Cape May, so it is unlikely that he will be able to bring in national guns aside from maybe Obama. However, Jeff would likely endorse Hillary Clinton for Pres because he is planning to run for Congress in 08 and can't afford to upset her.  That being said, Nick does not win this race. Van Drew will be sitting in the State Senate come January.  Why Cape May wants him, I'll never know but I suppose he is better than Nick.

Desperate act by Asselta

Who is next , George Bush? The people of the 1st Legislative District could care less about these National Republicans. Giuliani will not bring Asselta an extra 10 votes. Asselta's " big time " campaign managers once again are misreading the District voters. Lots of photo op's , but not substance. Asselta refuses to talk about his record and votes. Forget Rudy, I want to know why he voted against funding the State Worker pension fund this year. One thing Giuliani and Asselta will have in common, they will both be losers .

I agree that Rudy or Nick bring much to the table, but the 1st district can still vote in a Republican-this only helps Nick.

SJ Blue...you seem fairly rational....

While I think we are on the opposite sides of the spectrum you seem to be a farily rational individual. You seem to be engaged in the race in the First District.

Here's a question: What do you think is the key in this race and why do you feel Van Drew will win? Any other takers who would like to ellaborate to someone who has paid attention (not much) to this highly contested race would be greatly appreciated...as long as you don't have an agenda.

Let's At Least Be Honest

RedGenerationRocks, let's be honest here. You accuse commonsense of being the only one who posts strongly for Van Drew (which isn't true, but besides the point), you are the strongest supporter for Asselta on here. While commonsense is certainly a supporter of Van Drew, no one can deny that, you can't act like you are not the same for Asselta.

Also, knowing who owns Congress Hall is not evidence of being an insider. It is common knowledge. Anyone who reads the paper, particularly during the McGreevey administration knows that Bashaw owns Congress Hall.

And whether you like Van Drew or not (see SJBlue), you have to concede that he is not a joke. He is a Democrat who is dominant in his elections. Love him or hate him, Van Drew wins elections. On the other hand, Asselta has based his campaign around one single issue, an issue every candidate in the election agrees on. I have been following the race in the paper and I have yet to hear anything from Asselta that isn't about the toll roads, with the exception of a press release or two about immigration.

I want to know what Senator Asselta plans to do about property taxes and as a resident of Cape May County, I am very concerned about tourism funding. There are so many issues that affect this area other than the toll roads (though, I will readily admit that the monetization issue does affect us down here).

I think Van Drew will win because he is just running a better campaign. I hear more about issues from him than I do Asselta. I have lived in Cape May County all my life and have followed Van Drew's rise in politics. He is going to win, in my opinion, because he has had to fight for every vote he has ever gotten. I have also followed Asselta's political career and this is his first real campaign yet. This is a Republican district, so it is a lot easier for a Republican to win. Asselta has never faced a tough challenger until now. Like I said before, like him or hate him, Van Drew can campaign.

i think its a good thing for

i think its a good thing for the people of Cape May to have a potential President close to their State Senator.

1st district race

I'll correct myself from my original post I meant to say neither rudy or nick bring much to the table-anyway. I believe Van Drew wins this race because he will have penty of money, and plenty of ground support. Nick, while he has a fair amount of popularity Cumberland, and Atlantic Counties are turing Democratic. Nick needs big turnout in Cape May-but Jeff is from Cape May and polls very strong (as he always has). Nick can make this a race, but there is little on the ballot that can help him and he has never been a tough campaigner. Jeff on the other hand has been in a few dog fights and came out stronger. That is basically how I see it. Plus, Jeff has always grabbed headlines better than Nick.

If everyone's being honest

FirstAmend should admit he works for Van Drew.
