GOP candidates debate abortion, taxes in 7th district forum

Kate Whitman and Leonard Lance sought to affirm their conservative credentials at a forum for seventh district Republican congressional candidates in Clark last night.

About eighty Republicans showed up to hear the seventh five of the contenders for the seat of four-term incumbent Mike Ferguson, who announced last year that he would not seek re-election.

Positioning himself as the social conservative in a field of pro-choice Republicans, Scotch Plains Mayor Martin Marks made it clear he is pro-life.

"God’s greatest gift to us is life, and it should be honored, cherished and protected," said Marks. "One of the worst things you can do is walk on both sides of the street (on the abortion issue), hoping the law of the land will be changed."

Whitman described herself as “more conservative that my mother,” referring to former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, and said she would work
to make it illegal for undocumented workers to wire money "to their real homes in foreign countries."

Former Summit Council President Kelly Hatfield said she was personally pro-life, but answered a question about her views on abortion by affirming her pro choice stance when it comes to whether or not abortion should remain legal.

"I don’t like government interfering in (people’s personal) decisions," Hatfield said.

Christopher Venis, a former Deputy Mayor of Hillsborough and aide to Rep. Bob Franks, said he was undecided on the abortion issue.

Lance, the former State Senate Minority Leader, highlighted his legislative experience and his willingness to fight Democrats on what he cited as the governor’s wrong-headed plan to monetize the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike.

"I voted against massive borrowing and successfully sued (former Gov.) Jim McGreevey," said Lance. "I have abandoned my own party when they have departed from these issues. We need to make President Bush’s tax cuts permanent to recharge a softening economy."

Each of the candidates pledged to cut taxes, reduce spending, be tough on homeland security, and let Generals -- not politicians -- make the decisions about the progress of the war in Iraq.

Whitman citied her experience raising twin boys as evidence that she has the necessary energy to shake up Washington. She said she has raised $200,000 from nearly 200 separate donors.  Lance, who declared his candidacy this week, refused to disclose how much he has raised.

Venis said he would not be a congressman who would go to Washington to "sing cumbaya with (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi."  He criticized the likely Democratic nominee, Assemblywoman Linda Stender, for voting to end capital punishment.

"I got to see these animals every day," said Venis, who worked for the state Department of Corrections under Gov. Donald DiFrancesco. "These are monsters on death row and they deserve to be there."

Warren Township Mayor Victor Sordillo says he will also become a candidate for Congress, but did not attend the Clark forum because of a conflict with his township committee meeting.

"I’ll be making an official declaration next week," said Sordillo, who describes himself as a pro life fiscal conservative.

Great event last night

Marks is the clearly the candidate to beat in this race, he was head and shoulders about the rest on every issue. Cant wait to see him debate against Stender.

Wow, more conservative than her mother.

I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the horse. Kate stated she is more conservative than her mother, is that supposed to mean anything? Mommy is too liberal to be a Democrat south of DC. Even Hillary Clinton could not have appointed more liberal judges to the NJ Extreme Court than mommy did. Christie is responsible for converting New Jersey from a Red state to a Blue state and now "The Seed of Christie" wants to go to Washington to destroy what's left of the Republican Party. What a country!!

Incidently, why isn't Kate using her married name? I guess fully liberated women want their own identy or in her case mommy's for fund raising through Emily's List and Wish List.

Marks Pro-Life?

Wasn't Marty Marks originally pro-choice?   Is this just a flip-flop?

Marks always has been Pro-Life

Pro-choice? Dont think so...better do more research Cincy.

More Conservative than her Mother?

Heaven help us if there any any NJ Republican more liberal than Christie Whitman - at least since Clifford Case passed away. And I guess maybe Bob Martin gave her a run for the Rockefeller Republican title.

You know who is going to beat Marks...

Marty Marks.  Sorry ClarkVIP but after last night I think you're the only one who was impressed. Marks is very arrogant and acts like he is entitled to the seat... one would think that Whitman or Lance would act that way but both are working harder than Marks.

01/25/08 1:52 pm

How so Sloburn?

If anyone thinks the seat belongs to them is Whitman...no one is buying the "Dont vote for me because of my mother" line. The only reason she's even being mentioned is because of her mother, half of christie's former staff is doing the leg work for the kid...as for Lance, his arrogance was oozing all over the podium last night. He touted his 2 decades in the legisalture as if it was something to be proud of...New Jersey is worst today than the day he took office...Lance feels this seat is owned to him because he lost his leadership to Kean. Marks is confidnet in his passion and convictions, I'm sure that scares a lot of the RINOs that are in the field. (lance & whitman).

Marks a conservative???

Last I saw, he was campaigning for raising state income taxes even higher than the current McGreevey-Codey-Corzine confiscatory rates.  Just being pro-life doesn't make anyone a conservative.  Look at Mike Ferguson or Chris Smith.

The sins of the father/mother

Leonard is a good man... I agree that his record should be examined very carefully over the coming months. But I hardly think he came across as entitled or arrogant.

As far as Whitman, I guess we all are clones of our parents.   We'll have to see if she can define herself in a crowded field.

I wonder if you would be making this same argument if Tom Jr. had run for the seat? He was appointed to the Assembly and Senate and then ran for the US Senate. So I guess because his father was a popular Governor thats ok... but since Christie is not popular... Kate has no right to run in a primary. I wonder what my mom an dad's approval ratings are right now?

01/25/08 4:12 pm

Hey Rick.....

Does Marty need to get arrested to be considered a conservative...ala Stevie?

The 7th C.D. Race

I'm a registered Republican and I live in the 7th and the 23rd legislative district.  Leonard is my State Senator and I know him pretty well.

Leonard is relatively conservative on fiscal matters, but his allegiance to the nanny state, and envirofascism makes me squirm.  I don't think I can support him for Congress, even though I consider him a fine and professional gentlemen.  And I think he's too nice to take on Baloney-Bender Wide Rear-Ender Stender.

I've looked around at the other candidates and they don't seem like Ron Paul Republicans to me.  The usual conservative clap-trap about smaller government and family values, blah, blah, blah.  Smaller than what?  The current Leviathan?  Who cares?

Maybe if i wait around along enough, a real elephant will toss his or her hat in the ring.  But right now, I don't see any declared candidate that I could excited about.

But almost any of the candidates (except maybe Whitman) would be better than Fergy the Fire-breathing Fascist.

01/25/08 5:01 pm

Oh this is real pro-life

Whitman said she would work to make it illegal for undocumented workers to wire money "to their real homes in foreign countries."  God bless her for caring about life this way and for her genuine compassion for people less fortunate.

That is the nastiest, most evil thing I have ever heard a candidate say in my life.   I guess when she says she is pro-life she means pro white, American life.  I guess she never took a liking to any of the foreigners who tend to farms or horses and gardens in Oldwick.  Perhaps she should stick her head in the kitchen at the Country Club and get to meet some of the folks she seems to have such disdain for and explain to them the immorality of wiring money back home to help their families get a better life.

She sounds like one of those folks who believes in the sanctity and dignity of life from conception right up until birth.  Then you're on your own, amigo.

01/25/08 5:15 pm

 Whitman never claimed to

Whitman never claimed to be Pro-Life... she is pro-choice. On the immigration issue... there are other people who wire money "to their real homes"  other than Central and South Americans... they are called terrorists. So it's actually a really good idea.

Marks is an excellent

speaker.  His presentation was on target until the end.  When he went to the abortion/gay marriage issues, he proved that he is not marketable for the general election.

Hatfield was the only one to address the taxes v money coming back issue - cut waste (pork barrell).

Lance came out swinging and looked impressive.  Think he got a new haircut.

Whitman spent much time distancing herself from mater.

Venis came out bumbling and his Franks connection was a negative.

For Bitaryo

Just a few observations...Lance was FAR from impressive...he needs to stop his "lets fire up the crowd" routine, its didnt work and it never will. He's about as charamatic as my left big toe. However, I liked what he had to say and would consider supporting him.

Marks was right on every issue and was clearly the strongest on the group.

It's pretty low of you to bash Venis like that...yes he wasn't the strongest, but it takes a lot of courage to stand in front of a crowd of 200 people, including GOP state leaders, and campaign. He did stammer a bit, but hats off to the man for running and speaking his mind.  INfact hats off to all 5 of the candidates. They all did a great job.

For clarkvip1

Mr Venis is running for the US Congress.  If this is how he speaks in a "friendly" crowd, what is he going to be in one that is not his Party.  This is the big leagues.  He was not ready. And at his age and with his resume, I expected a pro.  It is a shame because he is the only one who does have the foreign policy experience.

The Clark Committee did run a good program.
