GOP Councilman switches parties

Gloucester Township Councilman Dan Hutchison has switched parties from Republican to Democrat.

Hutchison confirmed on a phone call today that he filed the paperwork with the board of elections, officially changing his= registration to Democrat.

The former GOP congressional candidate was elected to the Council in 2006, winning a non-partisan race.  He ran on a slate with Mayor Cindy Rau-Hutton, also a Republican.

He recently drew attention when he decided to not to seek the Republican nomination for State Senate, saying that the Democratic incumbent, Frederick Madden, was doing a good job.

Another Switch

Whatever the reasons for his departure from the Party of the past to joining the Party of the future ,-- perhaps it was because he is serving a heavily-Democratic constituency, perhaps it is because the Democratic Party offered the most opportunities for him personally, or perhaps it is because the Bush administration is one of the most corrupt and inept administrations in history -- Councilman Hutchinson is heartily welcomed into an inclusive, expanding Democratic Party. The pattern in South Jersey, and arguably in the entire state, is clearly that of Democratic gains complemented with Republican-to-Democratic (Metzner, Bodine, etc.) changes in party affiliation.

Actually

Hutchison could care less about party affiliation. He's a self centered ego maniac who has an overly high opinion of himself. The only question I have is what did it take for George to buy this guy? I'm sure, knowing Hutchison, the price was cheap.

DISRESPECTFUL & DISGUSTING

If Dan is moving to the Party of the Future then I am not really happy about where our Town, County, or State is heading. If Dan Hutchison is the Poster Boy for the Party of the Future - then we are all in trouble. Add Dan Hutchisons name to the list of disgraced Democrats: Gov. McGreevey Sen. Bryant Sen. Lynch Sen. Toricelli now - Councilman Hutchison. Enough said.

Doesn't anyone care about Gloucester Township!  I guess not!

Martin

Martin, your words sound just like Adolf Hitlers and the Democratic Party is quickly becoming the Nazi party.

GOP Councilman?

Well I guess people forgot about the donation this Clown made to the Gloucester County DemoCrooks a couple of years ago.

That should have told you something then to real Republicans, although there aren't to many of us left these days.  Even at his swearing in last year there were indications that this guy wasn't a real Republican so why should it surprise you all now.

And as far as I am concerned they can have these two useless so called - what ever they are calling themselves today.........

They are ALL RINO's.

Blue Jersey yet again!

Leave it to Blue Jersey(Martin) to compare the most local party switch to the national stage "perhaps it is because the Bush administration is one of the most corrupt and inept administrations in history " oh yeah im sure thats it... people who run for township committee's as Republicans automatically are related to President Bush and that's why this guy switched..yeah that makes a ton of sense. I'm sure if board of ed elections were partisan Martin would find a way to compare them to President Bush as well. Come on! Not everyone with an R next to their name is a Bush supporter or can be linked to him at all..especially township committee's..who are you Bob Menendez?

yes, another switch

How surprising that a bunch of so-called Republicans realized that you have to be an idiot to try and fight the Camden County Democrat buzzsaw to survive, especially when your own party provides no tactical support.

The powers that be in South Jersey must be overjoyed that cheerleaders such as MartinOne are more than willing to wave the pom-poms. It's one thing to be partisan, it's another to be sychophantic. The term "lapdog" comes to mind.

Hutchison, etc.

First, Hutchison’s motives are unknown to us, and we are all making speculations on why he switched parties. From what others have posted, he never really seemed to be a card-carrying Republican, and he had refused overtures to run for state senate against Madden.

There is absolutely no proof that he was paid off or anything like that from the Camden County Democratic machine, so let’s not make the logical fallacy of jumping to conclusions. I felt this way, that is, resisting prejudgment until some verdict is made, when GOP Chairman Tom Wilson was implicated in the Robert Stears scandal with the BurlCo Bridge Commission, and I felt the same way about the Menendez-rental agreement subpoenas.

Not that I have to prove anything to anyone, but for those GOP posters who accuse me of following orders from the Camden County Dems, please take a look at my front page post on BlueJersey excoriating Senator Wayne Bryant and pay-to-play practices: http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=3241 How many of you Republicans who claim to be for clean, transparent government have spoken out against K Street lobbying, Duke Cunningham, Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, and the corrupt Bush administration? Sycophantic, indeed.

If you really want to know who is pulling the strings for the many GOP-to-Dem switches, it is most likely not Norcross, who has been effectively neutered by the Corzine administration, but probably instead Corzine and Rep. Andrews (The GOP didn’t even bother to run anyone against Andrews in November, a sign of his electability and power). Whether you agree with every policy that Corzine puts out, we all would have to concur that he is going through a honeymoon period, and most New Jerseyans, despite our cynicism towards state government, give him a favorable rating. Many GOP switchers, such as Bodine, I think were talked into switching by Corzine, and they may see this as their chance to become more influential in state government.

BackwardsNJ: Your posts are very fair, and I agree that my critique of Dino in the other thread was not fair in its criticism; not all Republicans think like that, and a broad stroke applied to all of them does not do justice to the plurality of views in the party. I do find it disturbing, though, in thinking of fundamentalism in the GOP, that three GOP presidential contenders raised their hands when asked whether they didn’t believe in evolution. It is moderates such as you who need to reclaim your party. Then again, respectfully, is there anything I can do to make you, an obviously rational and thoughtful person, to consider joining the Democrats? ;)

Finally, in a somewhat related matter, since I have lived in the state only four years, perhaps one of you can tell me whether, in your estimation, the state GOP, who stands to lose Ferguson’s congressional seat, lose their challenges to Lautenberg and Corzine in upcoming elections, are down 4 to 1 in fundraising for November 2007, may very well lose state senate seats in said elections, and are having Republicans switch to Democrats on a weekly basis, has every been this collectively weakened?

05/11/07 10:07 am

I was wrong

Boy was I wrong. I gave him 3 months to switch parties based on his previous press release. It only took one.

Quite a principled stand

Marty, you're a stand up guy going after Wayne Bryant. Takes some guts.  What's next?  Attacking Barry Bonds for steroid use?

To give you some credit though, you are not totally off base in your last paragraph. Ferguson will survive the next two elections, since his district generally leans GOP and he survived the '06 tsunami. In '12, he will be cut to ribbons in redistricting when New Jersey loses a seat and he is dealt off the table.

Also agree with you on the State Senate. At most, one Dem senator (Karcher) is remotely vulnerable, whereas the GOP is facing oblivion in several districts, especially in your neck of the woods.

haha

Martin, thanks for the compliments. Kudos to you for recognizing Wayne Bryant as the corrupt politician he is. I could never be a Democrat in this state however, for one it's way too easy to root for the winning team. Second, I will never support the big three (Corzine, Lautenberg, Menendez), I'm just realistic in my way of thinking that Jersey is a very independent state and hardcore conservatives will always have trouble appealing to them. That and I really do favor young moderate Republicans who are willing to recognize that some on the other side aren't as bad. If you asked me personally who's not bad in this state on that side I could come up with a select few: Codey(not on policies as much but as a person)..on policies: Van Drew has always done a good job at working for good ideas, Pat Diegnan Jr. has done a good job for education, Pallone does a good job in his district, and Rothman seems to do a very good job in his district as well(not too sure of his policies).

I laughed at the three who raised their hands for not believing in evolution, however that is their personal views and I respect that. Although I guarantee you I'm not supporting one of those three.

However this wouldn't be a good post unless I questioned you on something as well: "How many of you Republicans who claim to be for clean, transparent government have spoken out against K Street lobbying, Duke Cunningham, Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, and the corrupt Bush administration?" Well Cunningham and Abramoff are in jail now, DeLay is no longer holding office, and I have never been a big supporter of the Bush administration(some conservatives aren't supporter's as well). I wouldn't call them corrupt, not Bush personally, Cheney's another story..ha. The difference between at least the first three examples (Cunningham, Abramoff, DeLay) and Bryant is that Cunningham and DelLay aren't STILL IN OFFICE and can't claim the title of Deputy Majority Leader. The fact that Bryant is still in office, signals there is a failure with Corzine's leadership to let a man who has been charged of a crime(not just handed a subpoena) to maintain office and represent his district.
