GOP piles on Bodine, as Dems cry "Boss"

The GOP candidates in District 8 were all over Assemblyman Francis Bodine and his running mates on the heels of a Courier-Post news piece yesterday they said depicted Bodine as the ultimate insider and hardly reformer material.

Democrats responded with what they said was damning news about GOP Assembly candidates Dawn Addiego and Scott Rudder - and trotted out the "boss" tag in connection with the Republicans, noting that GOP strongman Glenn Paulsen had been observed "huddling" with Addiego and Rudder at party HQ in Mount Holly.

First, to the Republicans on the Bodine story fallout.

"He has said he fails to see anything wrong with using his reputation and his official position to help companies who pay him to secure contracts from government agencies," Burlington County Clerk and state Senate candidate Phil Haines said of his rival, Bodine. "He is a textbook definition of conflict of interest, using his official position as a legislator to line his own pockets with private interest cash."

Haines’ running mates, Dawn Marie Addiego and Scott Rudder, likewise took up the drumbeat, insisting that Bodine’s running mates, Tracy Riley and Chris Fifis, "condemn Bodine’s lucrative and highly questionable outside activities or abandon their efforts to portray themselves as independent reform candidates."

Bodine said he receives $35,000 a year from an insurance company, spending about two and one-half days a week to help the firm secure government contracts that he and makes another $36,000 a year as a consultant to an engineering firm.

"This in addition to a $49,000 salary for his part-time Assembly job, plus a $53,000 pension for being "retired" from the public payroll," said GOP spokesman Chris Russell.

While Bodine was trapped on the ropes and taking punishment, Burlington County Democratic Chairman Rick Perr went after Rudder, Addiego and the Paulsen connection, noting that it was Paulsen who was the "mastermind" behind the Burlington Bridge Commission Scandal, which bilked taxpayers out of $2.7 million dollars for State GOP Chairman Tom Wilson's lobbying firm

"It now appears that Addiego and Rudder are firmly entrenched in protecting the Paulsen family business," said Perr. "As their fledgling campaign grows more desperate by the day, Boss Paulsen has returned to resurrect his schemes to reap a profit on the backs of Burlington County taxpayers.

"Addiego and Rudder are proving to be beholden to the very corruption that has cost Burlington County taxpayers millions of dollars," Perr added.

Comments

Huh?

Perr's only comeback is Dawn and Scott were seen with Paulsen? Wow - talk about weak.

Bodine is confronted by the media (not Republicans) for abusing his office for personal gain (which is well documented) and Perr's only response is someone saw Glen and a couple of candidates in the same area?

When Perr stops profiting from his position and stops putting corrupt politicians up for office - then maybe people will take him seriously.

OMG we are governed by idiots

Bodine is basically admitting that he is selling his office. How the hell can that not be a crime. ATTENTION!!! ATTENTION!!! Mr. Corzine, you promised us transparency and ethics. This is pretty transparent, now lets get to the ethics part. I demand a law making Mr. Bodine's actions illegal NOW!

Stupid Stupid People

How can anyone vote for people like tracy riley and chris fifis?? We know Riley is a IMHO a disgusting person for making money off of illegal terrorist and is desperate to claw her way to the top regardless of who she hurts. Fifis, well, he is just too stupid to stand up and realize his ticket is so utterly flawed! Of course that sawed off little hack Perr has no choice to try to defend his man; but remember, perr like Marty has slammed Bodine for the past year untilo he became a dem, and now what do they do to protect him?? So what do they do?? They try to make an issue over Addiego's neglect to pay a personal bill! lololol These are stupid evil people and I think more is coming down the pike about the dem ticket shortly

More Cowbell Please !!

Thank you Burlington Dems

For putting out the dumbest press release this election season. Addiego and Rudder were seen talking with Glen Paulsen - film at 11. Who cares! If they ask for nominations for the worst press release of the season - I will definately nominate this one.

10/03/07 6:48 am

good stuff

District 8 Republican senate candidate Phil Haines on Bodine: "He has said he fails to see anything wrong with using his reputation and his official position to help companies who pay him to secure contracts from government agencies."

If Haines, Addiego and Rudder, the latter of whom raised taxes enormously while Medford mayor, followed their own advice, perhaps Capehart and Scatchard, Boss Paulsen's firm, wouldn't have gotten lucrative contracts while the first two were freeholders; the Burlington County Bridge Commission, with whom they made multiple contracts for non-existent services, costing taxpayers at least $2.7 million; and the BurlCo slush fund to nowhere, which means more bonds and higher taxes, wouldn't have been created by the Republican freeholders.

Being lectured by these three on ethics and pay-to-play is like being lectured by Tom DeLay on clean government.

10/03/07 7:25 am

What??

Marty, Glenn Paulsen is not running for office, but Fran Bodine is running for office. The corrupt official here was gladly accepted into your party, because you have experience with these kinds of people. Now, Marty, let's take a look at the overall picture. Of all the corrupt politicians in this state, indicted and convicted, the vast majority are from which party? I don't defend the indefensible, Marty, if they're corrupt, send them away, regardless of party. You seem to want to coddle them, but only if they're democrats. That's why there will never be true reform in this state.

10/03/07 8:00 am

LOL

It just gets better doesn't it? Maybe someone should muzzle Fran and Rick. They aren't helping their cause. And maybe people who live in Camden County should worry about the ethical behavior of their own corrupt county government first.

10/03/07 8:30 am

Two things

Though there is nothing criminal about the district 8 Republicans having a pow-wow with Boss Paulsen, it does speak to their interests and political allegiances; will their allegiance be to Capehart and other Paulsen connected agencies, or will it be to the taxpayers? I've seen very little evidence -- from Haines and Addiego's "tax and spend," "inside contracts" time as freeholders to Rudder's connections with Bark -- that they have the taxpayers best interests.

Further, GOP director Chris Russell has been described as disgraced, and I'm wondering if I missed yet another scandal involving the BurlCo GOP.

10/03/07 10:46 am

Come on

Is that any different than Norcross meeting with Adler or any other Democrat? Give me a break.

10/03/07 11:26 am

Scandals Abound

MartinOne, your sources are correct as it appears the current GOP exec is no different than the last two who filled that position. And it is just the tip of the iceberg, the old hangers-on are causing the GOP to implode.

10/03/07 11:40 am

Adler/Norcross

I forget the exact postings - but I distinctly remember how Martin was offended when someone stated that Adler was close to Norcross. Martin jumped up and down and asked anyone to provide proof that Adler was in cahoots with Norcross.

Please allow today's CP and Adler's own words prove that Norcross owns Adler and the rest of the greater Camden County politicians...

"It was Adler's 1991 campaign that made Norcross a statewide political player. In that year, Norcross bankrolled the first big-money legislative campaign, airing surprise attack television ads the week before the election.

With his campaign financed, in part, with a $200,000 loan from Commerce Bank, Adler defeated longtime Republican state Sen. Lee Laskin. He was the only Democrat to defeat an incumbent Republican that year, when voters were angry with then-Gov. Jim Florio's $2.8 billion tax hike.

Adler has announced he's running for Congress next year, taking on popular Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton, R-N.J. Norcross' proven ability to raise millions in campaign funds and win elections will be important to Adler's chances.”

"He has been enormously successful at helping elect quality Democratic candidates throughout New Jersey," Adler said, "and I'm hopeful he will continue to play a role in recruiting and electing good candidates."

Puke! People are absolutely clueless. It is not about electing quality candidates, it is about electing people to do Norcross’ bidding.

Bodine and Bark ripped off Burlington County for years and Norcross has been doing same to Camden County. Now, with the recent purchase of Bodine's soul, Norcross hopes to expand in Burlington - And Martin can't wait - pathetic!

stopdemcorruption or defendrepublicancorruption?

This is a thread on the district 8 legislative race, yet another pseudonymous (and most likely) Republican uses it to attack, you guessed it, yours truly. Rather than address substantive issues of corruption -- and, for the record, the BurlCo Republicans did nothing to get rid of Bark and in fact supported an enabled her corruption -- stopdemcorruption/enablerepublicancorruption now makes a fallacious logical argument, argument by association, against state senator Adler.

Adler may have gotten his start with some loans from Commerce Bank, but there is no issue of impropriety in doing so. Was there every a quid pro quo, and if so what was it? [Sound of silence.]

I'd be more interested in finding out more about Adler's opponent Rep. Saxton's shady Republican connections; as a consummate Washington insider and special-interest group supported candidate, Saxton has taken money from various companies for which he subsequently voted to support, disgraced majority leader Tom DeLay, John Boehner, Halliburton, Jack Abramoff, and so on.

Boss Paulsen may want Saxton, Adler, Addiego, Rudder, and "the crew" of accolytes to do his bidding at the expense of taxpayers' best interest, but BurlCo is changing, and Democrats are making substantial gains partly because of the culture of corruption and nepotism that marks the BurlCo GOP.

10/03/07 2:03 pm

Well Marty

The reason why people go after you is because you have no idea what you are talking about. First, I know for a fact it was COL Mike Warner who pushed Martha out. Yup, it is a fact. Second, your continued listing of individuals and groups other than Abramoff as corrupt is not only false, it is wrong. When will you call for those Democrats who received money from Halliburton to return those donations (they were legally given by the way)? When was Tom DeLay found guilty? Oh he wasn't. And what did John Boehner do? Come on Marty. Come back to Earth. And you obviously have no clue what you are talking about when you put Saxton in Paulsen's camp. The two are hardly friends. I have still yet to hear you call on Pallone and Menendez to return the money from Norman Hsu. And if you want to talk about corruption, I think I have the State of New Jersey Democrat Caucus roster in my top desk drawer from last session. I guess I could just list them all - every third one has been indicted on some charge. Remember - you were the one who said an indictment is akin to finding someone guilty. PS - as I have stated before, Saxton received nearly twice as much money from individuals than PACs. By why let facts get in your way again?

10/03/07 2:28 pm

Whither facts?: The World of "the oc"

These stream of consciousness posts, classic examples of the non sequiter logical fallacy, are really something else.

As someone who abhors any corruption, I frown upon any Democrat or Republican who takes money from corrupt individuals (Hsu to Paulsen to Abramoff) and doesn't return them. The problem with Saxton is that not only did he take money from all of those entities -- surely, you're not going to argue against that --, which he shouldn't have done, since he knew they were corrupt, but he then voted to benefit them, from weakening ethics laws in the house directly related to DeLay to voting to keep Halliburton paid and supported by the government with no oversight.

Who knows what you know about inside politics, since your posts are as shady as your identity, and you defend BurlCo Republican corruption. Bark was retiring not because of any type of clean ethics ethos in BurlCo Republican machine politics (one hesitates to use the word "ethics" and "Burlington County Republican" in the same sentence) but because she is a political liability. Wake up.

10/03/07 2:41 pm

Ad hominem attacks

Marty - you are crossing a line here. You constantly complain about ad hominem attacks, yet turn around and do it yourself. What do they call that? Ah, yes - it is called hypocrisy. Let's get to the last paragraph first. I don't give a rat's butt what you think, care, or fantasize of when you think of me (see I can revert back to the old days just like you). I had many conversations with COL Warner before, during and after the push to rid the county ticket of Martha Bark occurred. It was just before DeMarco was sent packing and Bodine was given the heave-ho. And why do you think she was a political liability? Because of ethics and the fact that the county organization at the time saw a better way of keeping the seat. Talk about waking up. Now, you may frown on Democrats who are politically unethical, but you have yet to take the same steps you have taken with Saxton, Ferguson, and LoBiondo and call Pallone or Menendez out on accepting money from Hsu and his associates. This guy made Jack Abramoff look like a boy scout. A million in contributions. So, here is your chance - show everyone here that you are an equal opportunity ethics saint and tell Pallone and Menendez (directly and not beating around the bush) to return the tainted money from Hsu. As for Saxton, he (Ferguson and LoBiondo) returned or donated the money they received from Abramoff and his crew. And until Tom DeLay is found guilty, the money received by him is legal. Same goes with Halliburton - and the Democrats who received campaign contribution from Halliburton who you refuse to call out. I am surprised that you are not more concerned with the campaigns of Sen. Menendez and Jessie Jackson Jr. who received money from Sharpe James; or, Susan Bass Levin who received money from Wayne Bryant (both to her congressional campaign and her PAC); or Jon Corzine, the DSCC and NJ Democrat State Committee who rceived money from John Lynch; and finally, Sen. Lautenberg who took campaign cash from Robert Janiszewski. Besides all four of those men being corrupt and Democrats, know what else they have in common? None of their money was returned by those campaigns mentioned.

Stop The Presses

Dean Buono saw John Adler and George Norcross in the same room! Ahhhh! Run everyone! Run!Get real. Adler is in the pocket of Norcross - Adler LOVES Norcross and says as much in the papers.Bodine is a dirtball and was asked not to run along with Martha Bark. Bark agreed and Bodine put the for sale sign up. And, shocking, Norcross bought Bodine (I am pretty sure it was a no-bid contract as well). Why is it the rest of the world sees Camden's highest in the state taxes, obvious corruption and the simple fact that Norcross buys legislators - and Martin does not?Why is it the poorest city in the US is Camden and Martin sees nothing in conflict with his legislators pocketing money, getting arrested, tons of news articles pointing this out, and the only thing Martin sees is party affiliation?  A Dem do wrong?  No way!I know you won't do this, but please fix up your own back yard before you start poking at others. In Burlington County, the R's dumped Martha, Bodine, DeMarco, and others. They have taken the lead in real reform. When was the last time anyone was dumped in Camden County? Your Senator was ARRESTED and no official has called for his resignation! In the immortal words of Dean Wormer, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

10/03/07 3:29 pm

For the record

It is true that Col. Warner did push Bark into retirement and caused Bodine to catapult himself into the Democratic camp-- he would not support them because of their ethics problems. Warner wanted clean candidates that would be interested in public service. And that is precisely why Warner got the boot, and we all know who's foot was inside of that boot. Now that the likes of Paulsen, Layton, Russell et al are running the show, good 'ol boy politics is back in Burlington County. Who do you think was going to get the work for the Bridge Commission aka Burlington Bank? It's a good thing Bill Haines has a brass set, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, you have to be grateful for this guy because he single-handedly stopped the scheme in its tracks.

10/03/07 3:35 pm

Marty Really is Off Deep End

Anyone including Marty who praises the way Perr goes after Bodine 1 year ago, and now praises Perr for standing up for his new DEM boy is really sick. But we all knew that. Anyone who posts in long tired drivel obviuolsy has a problem with reality and realizes they have no control of what people do. I have no doubt voters will be turned off by ethic problems and I LOVE THE OLD THREAD HERE ABOUT RILEY, FIFIS BODINE RUNNING A CLEAN ETHICAL CAMPAIGN! LOLOLOLOLK Buh Bye Franny
