GOP sees Dem victory in 7th district Assembly race

Republicans in Burlington County admit that their hope of picking up two Assembly seats in the politically competitive seventh district are over, saying that five-term Democrats Herbery Conaway and Jack Conners will win re-election.  The Burlington County Republican organization, once among the most powerful GOP machines in the state, is stuggling to fund what they view as more important fights: three seats in the normally Republican eighth district, where Phil Haines is in a tough Senate race against party switcher Francis Bodine; and in the contest for Freeholder.

That means the candidate who, six months ago, looked like the best recruit of the year -- former Philadelphia Flyers hockey star Brian Propp -- won't get criticial party funding for the final minutes of his Assembly bid.

Missed opportunity

I saw him play hockey and met him. He is a good candidate whois getting a bad shake

Agreed...Missed opportunity

What a missed opportunity. The county GOP of course says Propp and Griffin don't have a shot, simply because they are so broke and struggling to raise $$ that they can't afford to help Propp/Griffin. In reality these are two very strong candidates that have an excellent shot to win with Senator Allen on the top of the ticket. They continue to work hard and have a good message. unlike the county GOP, Senator Allen has been raising money and hopefully it will be enough to get their message out to the voters and deliver a big victory on election day.

10/23/07 9:44 am

Premature

I wouldn't write this one off yet. Not by a long shot.

10/23/07 11:04 am

Which Republicans

Is this the actual County party throwing Propp and Griffin under the bus? I can't believe that the Chair, Mrs Lacy would do that. I bet it is just those two or three men who are trying to take over the party - the Paulson group.  Do you know?

10/23/07 11:08 am

Probably not The Chair

I agree, Dawn Lacy as Chair probably did not support the decision to not fund 7th district race. Knowing the current situation up at HQ in Mt. Holly, The Paulsen group probably didn't even include her on what was another poor decision. Can't wait to see Paulsen and his boys go!

10/23/07 11:19 am

Not the County GOP's fault

The problem with the 7th district race is that Diane Allen has sold a bill of good to Propp and Griffin. The County GOP has not dropped the ball at all because they knew that the 7th was a losing campaign all along. Blame needs to be put on the good Senator from the 7th district.

10/23/07 1:25 pm

Welfare

How many times did Glenn Paulsen fund Allen and her running mates campaigns? She is unbeatable and should be able to raise her own funds, without the county's help. Now she has an easy race and she should be helping to fund the other races.

10/23/07 1:34 pm

You are Crazy

If anyone thinks Diane is in an easy race to help Propp/Griffin beat Conners/Conaway you are crazy. It will be a tough race that will require as much funds as possible. It is the responsibility of the county organization to help the candidates get elected. The BurlCo GOP however is in such shambles thanks to the actions of Paulsen/Layton that they can't raise money. Therefore they chose to pull out of the 7th and focus there very limited resources on other things. It was a poor decision and hopefully Senator Allen can overcome the county's shortcomings and get Propp/Griffin elected so she can have help in Trenton to fight off corruption and to lower property taxes. Propp and Griffin are probably the two best non-incumbent candidates in the entire State. And the county turned their back on them, what a joke! Is it time for Paulsen to go yet?

Statement from Dawn Lacy

Burlington— The campaign of 7th District Assembly candidates Brian Propp and Nancy Griffin released the following statement from Burlington County GOP Chairwoman Dawn Lacy.

“Whomever spoke to PoliticsNJ.com’s Wally Edge purporting to convey the opinion of the Burlington County Republicans regarding the 7th District Assembly campaign was wrong. As Chairwoman of the Burlington County Republican Committee, I would like to go on the record as saying that the BCRC has conceded nothing in this race, and we believe that we have an opportunity to elect two excellent candidates for Assembly on November 6th. Brian Propp and Nancy Griffin are working hard to spread their message of an affordable New Jersey to the voters of Burlington and Camden counties, and it is resonating with the taxpayers who are fed up with the tax and spend record of Herb Conaway and Jack Conners. The momentum on our side.”

Propp and Griffin continued:

“We’re pleased to have the support of Chairwoman Lacy as we move into the final weeks of this campaign. As we campaign across the 7th District, we have heard from everyone we meet that it’s time for new leadership and real solutions in the General Assembly. The taxpayers have had it with politicians like Herb Conaway and Jack Conners who talk about affordability at home but cast votes to raise taxes by almost $4 BILLION in Trenton. Brian and I will fight for tax relief and responsible budgets- and that is why we will win on November 6th.”

RepForLife

You are wrong to think that Paulsen and Layton can't and have not raised any money. Warner left the GOP in shambles and did not raise a dime from November 06 until he finally left in July 07. Paulsen and Layton have been raising quite a bit of money and are spending it on campaigns that can win (i.e. 8th district and County). The races in Burlington will stay as they are now and republicans will win the 8th, Freeholder, and Sheriff.

10/23/07 3:17 pm

Polling

Polling would suggest the GOP is severe danger of losing 8th Assembly Seats. Rudder is losing and after Addiego's awful debate performance she is probably not too far behind him in the loser column anymore.

I agree 8th Senate, Freeholder and Sheriff will be GOP wins most likely.

But wouldn't it be ironic if the GOP loses 2 seats they fought so hard to keep and won 2 seats they had written off.

And after November 6 the real GOP can do what it needs to do to correct what people like Layton/Paulsen have done to hurt the party. They are not good people.

10/23/07 3:23 pm

Debate

I doubt that debate will have much impact on this at all. It wasn't seen by nearly enough people. Additionally, anyone who has ever been to a Mount Laurel council meeting will not be voting for Riley. Her inexperience at that low level office is far too obvious. There is no way she could ever be an effective legislator.

Why all of sudden are you stiring the pot in Burlington County? You sound like a Democrat who is trying to cause problems. If Paulsen is involved in the campaigns - that is good news for the GOP. As a volunteer at HQ I have seen Bill Layton in action and he is doing a great job and will make a great Chairman - which is a duscussion we can have after the election. Please do us all a favor and go back to your masters in the Democratic Party - we dont want your BS in the Republican Party.

10/23/07 4:59 pm

CBS

To say Bill Layton is doing a good job would be correct. He is doing a good job serving the interests of Glenn Paulsen and other big donors who are making $$ off the taxpayers dollar. He doesn't care about anyone else though. And thats why he will Never become chair of the GOP. Who in their right mind would vote for him after he alienated so many people?

Bill Layton and Glenn Paulsen have not been elected to any position. They appointed themselves because of a sense of entitlement. Well they will get a loud and clear message on Nov 6 as they fall in the 8th district. And then they will be on their way out the door and nobody will be thanking them for their service.

If you were going to name yourself after a cartoon, wouldn't fat albert be more appropriate? Good to see you are still supporting the boys from your new place on West State Street. You did a great job in your stint in Burlco.

Allen battles with GOP bossBy ALAN GUENTHER
Courier-Post Staff

A smoldering feud in the Burlington County Republican party caught fire Tuesday when, in a private letter to local party chairmen, state Sen. Diane Allen said GOP boss Glenn Paulsen had tried to withhold $150,000 from her campaign.

Paulsen, she said, ''is not working in the best interests of the organization.''

''His actions have divided this county and alienated many,'' she wrote in the letter, dated Oct. 21.

In an interview Tuesday, Paulsen said Allen was thinking only of ''her own self interest and not the interest of the party.''

He tried to withhold the money from her, Paulsen said, because other candidates in tighter races needed it more.

Allen, said Paulsen, is angered because a previous GOP county chairman, Mike Warner, had promised her $600,000 for her campaign. Warner was ousted in June after Republicans lost control of the local governments in two towns -- Moorestown and Evesham -- that had long been GOP strongholds. Bill Layton is currently county chairman.

''(Warner) made that promise to her when the party had $50,000 in the bank and was $250,000 in debt,'' said Paulsen.

The letter, addressed to about 40 GOP municipal chairman, was not intended to be released to the public, said Allen's campaign manager, Adam Bauer. The Courier-Post received a faxed copy of the letter on Tuesday.

''Unfortunately,'' Allen said in her letter, ''our campaign ultimately had to hire an attorney to help us wrest control of these funds from Glenn. After a month of legal wrangling, we were finally able to get most of our funds transferred -- a bit more than $150,000 in total.''

With less than two weeks to go before the Nov. 6 election, Allen's 30-year-old Democratic opponent, Rich Dennison, saw this as a lucky break for him.

''Diane Allen can run and hide from the sinking ship that is the Republican Party,'' said Dennison. ''But she and Boss Paulsen have been tied at the hip from the very beginning. She was recruited by him, he has been her chief benefactor in terms of fundraising for all of her elections. She owes her political career to him.''

Paulsen said he and the 59-year-old Allen have been friends since they attended Moorestown High School together.

In 1995, when Allen was being heavily courted by Democrats, he convinced her to run for state Assembly as a Republican, Paulsen said. In 1997, she ran for Senate and has held the seat ever since.

In her letter, Allen accused Paulsen of conducting ''a partial takeover of the county Republican organization in July.'' Through Bauer, Allen declined further comment.

Paulsen, a former county GOP chairman, said he got involved again ''as a volunteer'' after Warner stepped down. Internal Republican polls show Allen sitting comfortably in the lead in the 7th District senate race, with 58 percent of the vote, he said.

He wanted to shift more money into the 8th District, where Republican-turned-Democrat Francis Bodine is fighting Republican county clerk Phil Haines for a state Senate seat.

''If Diane Allen thinks I'm such a bad person,'' Paulsen said, ''why doesn't she return the check for $7,800 I wrote to her in the primary election?''

Paulsen a Volunteer?

What a joke that statement is. Paulsen is only looking out for his interests, the interests of Tom Wilson, Capehart, Bill Layton and the other bums he has been involved with for years. Glenn Paulsen was kind enough to volunteer his time to destroy the reputation of Mike Warner, the former chair, and he is now pushing the current chair Dawn Lacy around in an attempt to gain power. He is not a volunteer, he is a money controlling bully who is destroying the GOP. He's one volunteer who is obviously not needed anymore and the candidates should send him on his way, without thanking him for his time. Then maybe some real volunteers will show up to help. And Dunesburry, I find it ironic you think Paulsen and Layton are doing a good job fundraising. They had to change their traditional $2000 per plate event at Maplewood into a $500 a head event at Layton's Country club. Doesn't sound like successful fundraising to me. But then again you are the same person who thinks your time at 223 High was a success.

Bad Year for the GOP

Though loyal (some might say blinded by their ideology) Republicans may hold out hope for Propp and Griffin, this Assembly race is all but over, and the disintegration and loss of power continues for the corrupt Burlington County Republican Party. No slick ads can make up for an underwhelming campaign such as those by the 7th district Republicans, especially when real leadership, particularly on military issues, is provided by Conners and Conaway.

I don't imagine that Griffin and Propp (I nearly forget their names since they are so obscure and have very little visibility) are looking forward to the results on Nov 6th; but then again, South Jersey Republicans, that is, the few that remain, are going to need a stiff drink after the beating they take in this election.

I would not get too excited yet. Allen is definitely winning and Propp/Griffin do have a real shot. Conners/Conaway do nothing for the people of the 7th district.

The issues in the GOP have nothing to do with the great service Sen. Allen has always provided the residents and it will not affect her vote total.

I am a loyal GOP member and I agree 100% with Sen. Allen. Boss Paulsen (as he was rightfully referred to in the article) is in politics for all of the wrong reasons.

Sen. Allen on the other hand is in politics to help the people and people will remember that when they vote Nov 6.

Dunesberry's time at 223 High Street WAS a success! FOR THE DEMS! The Democrats picked up the Surrogate's office, took control in Evesham, and laid the foundation for the takeover that is to come. Bring back Dunesberry.

Fundraising a Success

Dunesberry thinks the fundraising is a success because he wasn't asked to sign for a loan. They spared him since he just bought that house and all. So, to him it is a success.

Unreal

I have no doubt Diane will win, and this race is not over yet. Lets understand that C&C have only won their seats because of the districting in the 7th District. Unfortunately, we are saddled with a small part of Pennsauken which C&C rely on to pull them through. The dems go ballastic every time Pennsauken is talked about being redistricted. But, I am glad idiots like masonstorm and martin are writing off the GOP. They no nothing about what is going on and their innane postings only backs that up. Now, Diane and Phil will win their seats. There is still a race in the 7th, and the 8th for Assembly. Dennison has no clue nor any chance. It seems that last mailer against Riley is not working in her favor as she tried to play off, and Dawn and Scott are out there with Phil doing their thing. I am not counting Brian Propp or Nancy Griffith out yet.

Allen

First, there is no possible way that Republican infighting can be seen as anything but a negative towards the sinking Republican campaigns in the 7th and 8th districts. In truth, as with much of the state, there is little, if any chance, of Republicans gaining ground in this election, and they'd be lucky to hold the seats in the 8th and 7th that they currently hold.

I'm awaiting Allen's appearance in front of a judge so that she can explain if she used taxpayer money for poltical purposes to take notes on Dennison. Of course, she got in trouble before for using a taxpayer-paid employee to drudge up divorce records on a previous opponent and other matters. I used to have some degree of esteem for Allen, but after these potentially illegal machinations, her refusal to debate Dennison or answer questions from voters, her lack of response to an invitation to a teacher's forum in Willingboro, and her campaign's sending out Democrats to campaign for her in Florence, one wonders whether there is a shred of integrity left in the Allen campaign. And now she's begging Boss Paulsen to give her some money for her campaign, even though she is supposedly "independent" from the BurlCo GOP machine.

10/24/07 10:59 pm

Keep Waiting

Sorry Marty, but Diane is doing very well much to Richie
Dennisons chagrin.

Diane will win and then maybe you can take Richie out for a drink on November 7th

Allen redux

gopgal08: Do you honestly think a candidate who a) refuses to engage in debate and runs from the BCT Editorial Board when it is revealed her challenger will be there b) refuses to answer the Willingboro teachers in their request for a forum/meeting c) has an ethics complaint filed against her (and has the divorce papers scandal hanging over her head) d) votes for asset monetization then criticizes her opponent for supporting it (he doesn't) e) misses key votes in the senate on stem cell funding and civil unions and f) sends out Democrats (presumably paid) to campaign dishonestly for her in Florence deserves to be elected?

There is good reason why the Sierra Club, Garden State Equality and other organizations have surpising endorsed Dennison for this election cycle: He is the superior candidate.

10/25/07 8:57 am

Huh?

Ok, so you are pissed at allen because she was not there to vote on YOUR two favoroite things, stem cells and civil unions, Wow stop the presses! Civil Unions trump the corruption problem in Trenton!

Now you are talking about her so called scandals with a divorce meddling, ethics complaints by Dennison, etc. but that does not mean she is not going to debate or she runs away. Actually she is doing just fine and as of today, not too many people know who is running against her and that is a pure fact. You ask a half a dozen people who she is running against and they look blank, they have no idea.

Not too good for Dennison is it? There are no signs anywhere with his name on it, and that is rather odd considering that every other GOP and Dem running have signs up all over. The dems in our area have not even received any literture on or from Dennison either.

So, how can he with less than 2 weeks left think he honestly is going to beat Diane???? Not everyone gos on these boards either so therefore this was horrible planning on his part.

More Cowbell Please !!

10/25/07 5:16 pm

Martin One needs to check his facts

First,  the BCT didn't get their time straight, so the candidates crossed each other.  Diane sat across from Dennison at the Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Board interview and I believe the results of that meeting were in the paper today...Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed Senator Allen and stated Dennisons campaign misfired.

Second, the Willingboro teachers seemed happy with Diane when they all chatted at the endorsement party...

Third, the empty ethics charges Dennison filed are in front of the Ethics Committe, not a judge, unless you could Judge Friend, who's on the committee.  That publicity stunt will go away soon. And the divorce papers reference you made was an issue that was dismissed.  They usually dismiss things that have no merit.

Fourth, why would Diane critisize Dennison for supporting asset monetization?  He agrees with her.  Diane critisized the 7th district Assembly guys for supporting the sale of the turnpike by voting for the budget.  Oh, Dennison might not want to say he won't sell the turnpike to Cody, Cody might not give him the $25 check he's writing.

Fifth, Stem cell research funding is a double edged sword if the language didn't specifically exclude embryonic cells. The Civil unions bill was a real misfire.  The Dems were offered expanded language by the Catholic Conference which would have allowed not only civil unions but "frienship" unions that would allow good friends caring for each other to make medical arrangements etc.  Senator Allen was involved with the language negotiations.  The Dems wouldn't agree to the amendments.  So much for enlightenment. So don't tell me she was MIA.  You are misinformed.  Ask John Tomekee.

And finally, the best for last.  I checked with Allen's HQ.  No one has been paid to campaign in Florence.  Which means, Democcrats are campaigning for Allen on their own, because they love her.  When she went door to door they were cheering her on and stopping in the middle of the road to talk to her.  Oh, isn't Florence Dennison's home town?  At least that's what it says on his literature...

You are truly losing more credibility by the hour.

10/26/07 11:52 pm

Begging? Again Martin One doesn't bother with the facts

If you read and understood the situation, Allen asked for HER money back.  The money SHE raised.  She wasn't begging for money. Get it straight.

10/27/07 7:33 am

umm

allen wins conaway wins conners wins c'mon now everybody.
