Pennacchio: Belmar Mayor's Manners Inexcusable

Senator Joe Pennacchio, District 26, issued this statement after reading an online newsletter by Belmar Mayor Kenneth Pringle that used ethnic and sexist stereotypes to refer to New York and Staten Island tourists who frequent the New Jersey Shore town:

"Whether the Mayor Pringle means his rude comments as a joke or not, he offends a lot of good people. In doing so, he hurts Belmar's reputation, not New York's or Staten Island's. At a time when New Jersey needs every tourism dollar, stereotyping Italian Americans and women is not the way to boost the economic prospects of our Shore towns.

"The Shore is both a state and national treasure. When good people come to experience it, they should know that they will be treated with respect and courtesy by local officials, not ridiculed in a newsletter that seems obsessed with the behavior of the seediest visitors.

"Just as jokes about New Jersey residents sting those who know how beautiful and special our people are, most New Yorkers are justly offended when they are lumped together with the very worst elements that visit New Jersey towns.

"Mayor Pringle should apologize to the tourists who contribute so much to the economy of Belmar. He should apologize to women and Italian Americans for endorsing the use of such crude stereotypes. And he should commit his newsletter to highlighting the activities of very best people who visit the New Jersey Shore. There are millions of them every year. They shouldn't be too hard for the mayor to find, if he starts looking beyond the bars and night clubs."
