Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Princeton) released the following statement regarding Governor Jon Corzine's budget address:
"The State of New Jersey has reached a crossroads in terms of our economic future, whereby we can either address our current fiscal crunch in a meaningful and responsible manner, or we can use gimmicks to "get by" for another year.
"For too long, governors of both parties have chosen quick fixes and temporary solutions to patch our monetary problems. In this regard, I commend Governor Corzine for having the fiscal maturity to tell the public and the Legislature what we need to hear, not what we want to hear.
"While I do support the Governor's call for substantial reductions in state spending, I have concerns regarding the method of potential layoffs in the state workforce through departmental consolidation and the effect this budget will have on medical care, education, the reduction of services provided to residents, and the impact on historical and cultural projects.
"It is easy to play politics with the budgetary purse strings, but this issue is too important for bickering along party lines. I look forward to a serious and thoughtful discussion on this budget, which is historic in its attempt to bring New Jersey's fiscal house in order. In the end, my hope is the budget the Legislature approves by July 1st will be a bipartisan agreement which restores our fiscal solvency and accounts for the tough economic times we live in."
