It's put up or shut up time for Bergen County Republican Chairman Rob Ortiz.
Insiders say that Ortiz was elected County Chairman last summer to replace Guy Talarico mainly because of his self proclaimed skills as a uber fundraiser. He boasted of raising funds for state and national candidates and of being a member of the New Jersey State Republican Committee Chairman's Club. The party faithful took Ortiz seriously, and candidates for county and local office eagerly awaited the flow of campaign funds for the first time in years. (Kathleen Donovan's primary campaign for county executive in 2006 raised more money than the county organization raised in two full years).
The wait continues. Ortiz held a fundraiser earlier this week and announced today that the event produced $120,000 (the net...after expense amount was not released). He has reportedly already told the candidates for Freeholder and Sheriff that there's not enough to fund even a minimal countywide effort. With Joseph Coniglio off the ballot, the 38th district is not competitive. And Republicans say Ortiz is not spending much county GOP money in District 39, where State Senator Gerald Cardinale, Assemblyman John Rooney and Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk face tough races for re-election.
That leaves the municipal races -- with control at stake in a number of key towns including Rutherford and Fair Lawn. Ortiz's future as the Bergen GOP Chairman may well depend on a simple math question: How many times does 70 (the number of Bergen municipalities) go into something less than $120,000? And how many local Republican candidates were elected.

BCRO HQ
How much will go to paying the rent/bills at BCRO?
It comes down to those two "river towns"
If Fair Lawn and Rutherford turn Republican it will be a victory for Rob's group as well as adding two popluous towns as bases for ascending GOP candidates.
Had I been installed chair I would have asked all the candidates in 36 and 38 to step down and see if better people could run. I also would have dumped two-time loser Bob Yudin and replaced him with a down-county candidate. Paul Duggan is a great candidate and deserves full funding.
Unfortunately, you can't play nice with people when ur the minority party leader in a potentially competitive county. I do think at the end of the day Ortiz will see some successes this year.
Pulaski
Who are you? It sounds like you're not anonymous and I missed the memo.
I might be hangin out at the Skyway Diner...
Maybe ull find out then.
Bob Yuden is a solid Republican
Pulaski's previous Anti- Semetic comments against Mr. Yudin stand on their own. Bob Yuden stepped up to the plate long before any other candidate. Just how much money have you donated to the county slate.?
That has nothing to do with anything
I don't have any problem with Mr. Yudin's religious views, I have a problem with his previous two runs and what he chooses to focus on in his race. And I'll donate to who I feel is a worthy candidate thank you very much. And I believe there was a Republican primary so someone else could be the nominee.
way to shift focus
It’s amazing and probably why we keep losing that we shift focus from the BCRO and its pros and cons to Bob Yudin. Although people may not be thrilled with Bob running again - I personally feel he is a honest and respectable person who has stepped up to the plate each year to run when no one else wanted to run and more importantly his personal commitment of time and his own money into the BCRO races. People will come out of the woodworks if BCRO had millions to put into a race but when former Chair Talarico stated candidates were responsible for a minimum of 50k to run – I didn’t see many step up to the plate. Candidates will come and go – this is about the current chairman and where the organization is headed.
Ortiz is right
to focus well down ballot. They're in no position to win any of the county seats and even if he spent the whole nut on them it wouldn't matter. Few counties fund leg candidates...that's why leadership committees exist. Good for Ortiz for having the resolve to say no to the many hands out and focus his efforts on rebuilding the party with some municipal wins. The guy didn't get the Chairman's job until over the summer, he's doing the right thing with what he has. As usual, looks like the disgruntled in Bergen (i.e. those who didn't win) are still more interested in carping than doing. Go Rob! Don't let the a-holes get you down.
GOPanimal AWOL
Did Harry Shortway recieve your check ????
The BCRO will remain a joke...
...until they get rid of the Hackensack Mausoleum that costs them $8,000 a month.
But the GOP is more afraid of Ferriero's threats to "plant the Democratic Flag" in GOP headquarters than getting this financial load off their backs. It's as if people would think less of this impotent gang if they gave up this $100,000 a year annual boondoggle and spent the money on electing candidates.
A visitor to the BCRO HQ can see lots of framed black and white photos of dead people, folks at Gerald Ford rallies and a great shot of Frank Osmers and William Beck Widnall swapping campaign signs. I'm not sure there are any pictures of Ronald Reagan but Dwight Eisenhower is still a Republican hero in BCRO-Land.
There's also a great photo -- probably from the 1950s -- of an attractive looking Barbara Chadwick at some campaign event.
I Voted down the line..but I am only one person
I voted down the line already (ala absentee) in support of Chairman Ortiz and the BCRO candidates. Unfortunately I'm pretty much broke so I could not donate anything.
Here's hoping boss Ferriero doesn't stick his flag in the 39th. I encourage anyone who lives up there to volunteer and help out the entire BCRO and especially the energetic Matt Mowers in the 39th.
Ortiz is a disappointment.
The fact he still is holding on to that museum they call a headquarters is disgraceful.
The first thing Ferriero did in 98 was get rid of that rat trap the Democrats used to congregate in at South State Street and put all the money into the campaign which yielded victories.
Secondly, the state party helped in getting Ferriero and Bergen on their feet. What is Lance or Wilson waiting for? You can't win statewide without a GOP presence in Bergen.
The candidates in 36 & 38 are not the problem. The problem is the rampant number of so called Republicans in East Rutherford, Lyndhurst and North Arlington who all flipped to the Democrats for patronage and jobs to stiff the legislative ticket.
Finally, Yudin is an awful candidate. He think because he's Jewish he can win in places like Teaneck! The guy is out to lunch poltically and has no business on the county ticket.
When Ortiz wakes from his slumber and digests the results he'll see he could have acutally competed in 36 as well as 38. If Rutherford goes Republican, you can thank the incompetence of McPherson. She is one of the most hated mayors in Bergen County.
Why Ortiz is not seeking a charter revision to elect freeholders by district is beyond me. He can't be this dumb. I could draw a freeholder map of nine districts that would have at least 6 GOP leaning seats.
If Weinberg and company really wanted to stick it to Ferriero, they could draft legislation that all first class counties have nine freeholders from districts versus at large...
Local support and Best4Bergen
The cancelling of those Best4Bergen meetings was a huge mistake. Those county guys even got some money to us and other local towns before they were terminated..
The blame cannot go entirely
The blame cannot go entirely to Ortiz and the GOP leadership. The demographics in the county have changed over the last decade. People from NYC and other urban areas are moving into Bergen in droves. They are changing the complexion of its politics. Immigrants from all over the world are settling into Bergen. It's a fact.
Overall, Bergen is not driven by conservative ideology. The transplanted urban dwellers have moderated things quite a bit around here.
The first thing the Republicans need to do is stop the infighting between the conservative and moderate wings of the party. The conservative social agenda doesn't fly among Bergen mainstream voters anymore. Taxes and affordability remains a priority issue because it is no longer seen as an exclusively conservative issue. It has become a quality of life issue. If you cannot afford to live here, your quality of life deteriorates. It's that simple.
But one thing that can be laid at the feet of Ortiz and the Bergen GOP leaders is their dreadful silence on the best villain they've got: Boss Joe Ferriero. Ferriero has turned Bergen into a Hudson machine and the Bergen Republicans let him get away with it without even a whimper of dissent.
There are plenty of rank and file Democrats who would welcome any allies in the fight against the Rage of the Machine.
On The Waterfront since 1954
A Disappointment
I have gotten plenty of flyers from Cardinale in the 39th and think he will hold on. But I haven't gotten a single piece of mail or seen one ad by the BCRO for the county candidates. Meanwhile Ortiz is busy announcing his support for Estabrook. If this is how he expect to build unity among Bergen County Republicans, he is sadly mistaken. Even if we lose at the county level, it would be nice to think that BCRO is at least trying. Instead they seem to have abandoned their candidates.
This almost make us wish for Guy?
Only joking...Hey Rob can you please go and help our boy running against Sarlo...at least pump soem money into Lyndhurst and make those turncoats look like the true backstabbing fools they are...this is your chance to shine!
