Walsh Voiced Concerns about the West Front Street Bridge and Its Flood ZoneThe Candidate said She Plans to Attend Info Session

Keansburg (Monmouth County, NJ): Democratic candidate for Middletown Township Committee Pat Walsh attended the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Open House on Friday, June 13, at the Bayshore Senior Center.

Walsh said the event’s setup was much better than previous meetings involving FEMA. “I was able to go to a station and learn about my property,” she said.

She said that while her house sits on a piece of property not currently in a flood hazard zone, the lower part of her property is in a hazard zone.

Walsh said this was odd, as the West Front Street Bridge running over Swimming River was not labeled in a flood hazard zone.

She said the roadway had, indeed, flooded before. “The roadway is actually lower than our property,” she said. “Consequently, how does that affect the bridge?”

Walsh said she knew the lower portion of her property was considered to be in a 100-year flood hazard area, but that the bridge was not. “How can [the bridge] be considered in a 500-year zone when I know the area has flooded before?” she asked.

The candidate said she would be attending the public information session regarding the West Front Street Bridge on Tuesday, June 17.

The meeting will be held in River Plaza Elementary School, 155 Hubbard Avenue, at 7 p.m.
