State Sen. Paul Sarlo is running unopposed for now, after a state Administrative Law Judge ruled today that Republican Michael Guarino failed to file enough signatures to secure a place on the June primary ballot. The Judge disqualified two signatures, bring Guarino, a former Lyndhurst school board member and Bergen County Health Inspector, to 99 signatures -- one short of the total required by law.
That leaves the GOP without a candidate in a district where they held a legislative seat as recently as January 2006. Guarino says he might appeal, or run as a write-in candidate in the primary.
“Today’s ruling is a blow to democracy, but it is one that we will overcome. I will not let Paul Sarlo and his EnCap cronies go unchallenged, said Guarino. “I am disappointed that the judge did not see fit to uphold democracy in considering my petition for candidacy, said Guarino.
“In a state where the courts have bent over backwards to guarantee competitive elections, it is surprising to see a decision that denies the people a choice," Guarino said.

Bad Ruling
Because of one signature, you hand a senate seat to the incumbent? What is this guy afraid of? This is a very bad decision. Knocking a candidate off the ballot and ensuring victory for an incumbent is not democracy, it's just another reason why people despise politics and believe the system to be inherently corrupt. Having a choice is what matters here. What difference does it make if he has 99 or 100 signatures? How does the number of signatures rationalize placement on the ballot? I would appeal.
The New Totalitarian Regime!!!
I guess we now live in a totalitarian regime!!!! Let the Judges decide that we can only have one candidate! I wonder who else is on the ENCAP payroll? Nice going you crooks!
Dirty Corrupt Politics as Usual
What's the matter?? The big bad Democratic political machine can't take a little competition? Are they scared of the big bad wolf named Michael Guarino? Be scared my little democrats be very scared!!!!!!
I couldn't agree more!
One would have to be on the ENCAP payroll in order to afford to appeal this one!!
STOP SARLO VOTE NOVEMBER 7TH
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
WOW!!
This really can't be serious. Over one signature we remove a candidate? Wow...so much for the democratic process. The future is not very bright for New Jersey if our bullies on the bench continue to pander to their cronies. What a mess. This is just another example of why we are the laughing stock in this country...
SARLO THE COWARD
The big bad senator afraid of the former Bergen County Health Inspector. Not surprised at all. 1. He wants to horde his "war chest" of half a million dollars so he can use that to grease his fellow donkeys (I prefer jackasses) 2. He doesn't want to be further exposed for his role in the ENCAP debacle. How many signitures would it take to have Sarlo the coward slapped with a Federal indigtment on any number of charges?? That judge had to be a jackass! (if you know what I mean)
Down With Sarlo!!!!!!
I hope Sarlos cellmate is just as unforgiving as the legal wizard of a judge was in thhis case. 1 SIGNITURE!!!
WHAT A JOKE!!!
Lautenbergs / Torch Judge
I wonder has his judge a NO Show job ? He is out to lunch on the intent of the petitioners. Any bets that this Judge wanted a 20th recount in Florida after Bush won against Gore ??
Im not surprised!!!!!
Democrats by nature are schemers and inherently corrupt themselves. Sarlo and his camp remind me of a basket of snakes so when they act like snakes I'm not surprised. As Republicans we pride ourselves in believing in less government. This is just another example where that belief would be put to good use.I've got a good idea.... Check the judges offshore accounts.
Give me a break
What kind of candidate gets just enough signatures 2 b placed on the ballot? If u r stupid enough 2 file with 101 signatures, then u deserve 2 get kicked off. As 4 these other comments, sounds like sour grapes 2 me!
Walkdown
HOW MUCH MONEY R U STEALING FROM TAXPAYERS
YOU CROOK!
GREAT IDEA OF FAIR AND JUST GOVERNMENT
WHAT NEXT, LOCK PEOPLE WITH A VOICE UP?
I BET YOUR AN ENCAP LACKEY!
Walkdown A.K.A Another Jackass
Guarino could have filed with a million names on his petition. The decision would have read the same just with MORE names "mysteriously " disqualified....WHAT ARE YOU DEMS SO AFRAID OF????...GUARINO WANTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE...GIVE HIM HIS SHOT !!!!!!!
Can it be True?
Corruption...Scandal...Political Bias in the democratic party? That would be a big YES on all three accounts. Here's just another perfect example to further illustrate whats completely wrong with our current political state.
Walkdown..."stupid" I believe you are in need to be hooked on phonics. "U" is spelled thusly: "YOU" and "R" is spelled "ARE". The 101 signatures is an allusion to the English 101 class you need to take.
I say don't "walkdown"...when you can just Step Up and that's what we are about to do!!!
Uncle Reltih
WALKDOWN THE IMBICILE
To answer your question...the kind of candidate that had two days to prepare and switch from the pathetic Democratic Party to fight the good fight against a corrupt, backroom dealing criminal....Sarlo the Coward.
By the way "walkdown" it's called a WRITE IN!!!!
Let me ask you a question.....what kind of candidate wastes millions of taxpayer dollars on a swampland project going nowhere while giving all the related contracts to political benefactors?!
Why don't walk further down. In fact just walk away.
Laws Don't Apply to Democrats
If the judge had applied the law in 2002, Lautenberg would have never been placed on the ballot. Law says "shall be 51 days." Oh well, just a technicality, right? The decision to allow Lautenberg on the ballot was "to provide the voters of New Jersey with a choice for U.S. Senate." Guess that doesn't apply here. Or, how about not being able to bond to fund general revenue. Just a technicality, right? Democrats are hypocrites, plain and simple. This decision wreaks of sewer-like stench. And further down the tubes we go.
Question for "Talkdown"
Are you another of Sarlos encap lackeys or just another little pathetic "jackass" with no voice. Do you even care about NJ you slimeball?
FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me???????
Write Him In
If Guarino can't get on the ballot then a massive write in campaign MUST take place to get him on. I'm sure that there will be plenty of impassioned and outraged Republicans out there who are ready, willing, and able to do so.
Let's channel our anger and frustration into righting this wrong. Paul Sarlo may not care for the electoral process but that doesn't mean that we have to take it! Let's start taking action and start spreading the word for a write in campaign RIGHT NOW! There is no time to waste.
One way or another, Republican Michael Guarino WILL be on the General Election ballot.
Another Election without Democracy
How can we sit here and allow this to happen. How can democracy be allowed to reign free when we have restrictions on allowing fair races in our state.
GOD BLESS YOU DINO
One way or another, Republican Michael Guarino WILL WIN.
START SPENDING YOUR PRECIOUS MONEY, LIBS!
BCRO Chairman
If Guy wasn't so busy picking a fight in 40 that we don't need maybe he could have focused on getting someone and enough signatures for Guarino. Guess this decision of 1 signature to rid him off the ballot will be ok if the shoot down Cunnigham with here messed up paperwork - lets see if there is a double standard for the dems and reps.
If the Shoe was on the other Foot ?
Hypocracy has a name and that name is liberal Democrats using a fancy name Progressive, a code name for CORRUPTION. From Ferriero to Sarlo, from double dipping Freeholders to No Show plumbing jobs in Bergen. From Wayne Bryant to Brian Stacking the deck for an ex wife. From a 40 years of Calabrese family monopoly to a disgraced ex Gov and attorney general. On and on and on we go. When and where will it all end ?
TIME TO FIX
Isn't there usully when its a question of some signatures a 3 day window to go get the required amount? Any lawyers out there have the details on that?
Dino's Forum: Write in Campaign for Michael Guarino
Write in Campaign for Michael Guarino. I have also linked Paul Sarlo's homepage to the thread. Let him hear from you folks!!
Write In or file as an I
What is better? Running as an I could appeal to a lot of voters and would just require signatures - running as an R write in will be a little harder and what happens if you don't get the votes? Can you do both file and have people try and write you in?
Pretty sure Vin's right
It's in the petition instructions, where you have until a certain point to clarify signature questions, however you can't add more. If they're out after appeal they're out. It's unfortunate, but that's the law folks. In a year when Sarlo is vulnerable, not helping get enough signatures is squarely on Talarico.
What a Disgrace
The double standard in NJ politics rolls on... Based on the precedent set in the senatorial race a few years ago when a judge allowed the Democrats to dust off Lautenberg and challenge Forrester (when Toricelli left in shame) this judge should allow Guarino to challenge Sarlo on the same premise and allow for a fair contest. Clearly they are afraid of the fallout when the truth about the Xanadu project comes out in the election. Republicans in this state need to grow a backbone and fight the fight and stop worrying about taking the higher ground all the time. Nice guys finish last. Speaking of Guy, he is a complete and utter embarrassment and should be removed from his position
Pathetic.
This ruling undermines basic democracy and free speech. I've been told that Sarlo has hundreds of thousands raised and yet the BCDO is doing everything in there power to knock this guy off the ballot. What do they fear other than fear itself? Guarino is a stand-up guy who was always a Democrat until the nonsense that's taking place with the BCDO. Unless your a hand puppet for Ferriero, you don't have a seat at the table. Ferriero has surrounded himself with a collection of hand puppets with the exception of Weinberg and a few others who dare to oppose him. These people must be breathing a sigh of relief in Hackensack, but I hope justice prevails. No one deserves a free ride especially in a district where Republicans have a decent shot if they actually waged a real campaign. The Weinberg fiasco proved the BCDO to be a paper tiger. If Guarino gets back on the ballot, watch out. This could prove to be the upset of the state.
Slow Your Roll
Me thinks thou protest too much!
Democracy is alive and well
How do you cryout saying that democracy is not working, when in fact, the rules were followed. The democracy was saved because a candidate who did not follow the law was removed from the ballot. Do you suggest we allow phony signatures on a petition to remain? What is to stop people from just making them up? They were rightfully challenged and the correct decision was rendered by the judge. God Bless America...
So many issues, so little time...
Where do I begin? First off, District 36 is not District 28 or 34 or 5. It is a moderately Democratic area where President Bush won outside of Passaic City. There is no reason why three candidates could not be found by good party chairs. A former Democrat is fine, but one who is 78 with no name recognition? This guy wasn't Carmen Orrechio switching parties (who I believe could still win by the way as a Democrat or Republican). Anyway so with Bergen being the majority county, Bergen's GOP leader should have picked a nominee. There should have been a list of potential Senate candidates, not last minute panicking. Moreover, who gets 101 signatures? In a safe Democratic district, John Girgenti got over 500! What is with these people? Yes Guarino must and should run, but once again Guy Talarico and unfortunately Paul DiGaetano have put their own ambitions over building the GOP. I used to like DiGaetano but he should have taken the lead here. As for Guy, I think he lost his map of Bergen South of Route 4, and instead is trying to push his slate of sheer losers down the throats of Republicans in Northwest Bergen. Joe Ferriero could not imagine a better way to destroy the GOP unless he really is paying for Talarico. Yet the Bergen Dems are now scared. Why? Because they know that the voters are sick of their fascist tactics and empty promises. They have now cow-towed to a woman they openly revile in Loretta Weinberg, and she has sold her true supporters out by getting in the dirty political bed of the BCDO. How long before Teaneck and Englewood are overwrought with the pay-to-play massacre wrought on the rest of the county? The BCDO knows things like Red Faction and the BCRI are the future of the Republicans in Bergen. They know the backlash is coming, and once young, moderate Republicans and allies of Steve Lonegan bury the hatchet (as they seem to be) and unite, the Democrats misrule is finished. Already in towns like Fair Lawn and Woodcliff Lake the Democrats are on the wane. It is only a matter of time.
JC
Hey JC- Tell that to Senator Forrester
JC
Hey JC- Tell that to Senator Forrester
just the facts
The editor did not quite get the details of the story correct. Guarino filed a petition certified by the Division of Elections to contain 101 signatures. The administrative law judge invalidated 6 of those signatures (not 2) because the signers were registered Democrats. Democrats may not sign a Republican's petition of nomination for the primary. With all of this, the real story is being missed, which is why would Guarino, a long time Democrat, switch parties to run in the Republican primary?
The Real Story?
1. Why is the GOP doing nothing in a district they can win? 2. These Republicans in Bergen are only guaranteeing Republicans will lose at the local level with no top-of-the-ticket lead-in. In effect, they are cutting there own throats by cooperating with the likes of Sarlo & Ferriero. 3. Sarlo is completely untested and the guy is getting nothing but streams of bad press regarding encap, dual job-holding, VLT's. The list is endless. 4. Why would someone with $500K in the bank work so hard to have no competition? Because they believe they can lose.

When Sarlo was contacted by The Record for comment, he avoided the press. What are these people afraid of? Republicans are stupid if they don't work hard to get him (Guarino)Â back on the ballot. Not only will he make it a horse race, his presence on the ballot will all but guarantee a local victory in Rutherford. Sarlo is totally unknown in South Bergen.
Because the Record is a ridiculous excuse for a newspaper
I think Sarlo would have spoken to a reputable news organization, but since the Record is just a mouthpiece for the BCRO there is no need. No matter what he says it will be twisted and turned until the statement resembles a baseball stadium pretzel... The guy could cure cancer and the record would blame him for not curing it sooner. They are a shameful representation of the news media. As for Demsanddonts comment, I would have to disagree, emphatically. Sarlo is not only well known in South Bergen, he is quite popular. Guarino's name on a ballot won't do anything in Rutherford.
BCRO Mouthpiece?
We can agree to disagree about Sarlo, but you think The Record has a Republican bias? The paper is so far left editorially speaking, it's almost comical you would make such an outrageous observation. The paper is clearly left of center in it's political bent. It's pro-Corzine. They supported Kerry. They endorsed Menendez. That's just a silly statement.
Thats exactly why they are ridiculous
They clearly believe in liberal ideals and yet insist on bringing down those who believe in the same things locally. when the republicans were in control of BC there was almost never a negative editorial... they could do almost no wrong. They were incredibly corrupt. How do you explain those asinine contracts with regard to Bergen Pines and the carousel. The Record only started crying fowl when the dems came in and tried to fix it.
I'm not well versed in what you claim.
All I know is that the paper is clearly left-of-center and if makes no sense to fight the media. You never win that battle. That's Politics 101.
It's A Shame...
Some competition would have been healthy.
On the other hand the law is what it is and if the signatures are off; I can't blame the judge for his ruling.
It seems that the bottome line is that both the BCRO and the BCDO are some combination of incompetent and/or corrupt.
So what else is new? We have a White House that "enjoys" the same status.
I suspect that the hunger for real honest government transcends all "establishment" party lines.
In a political universe in which there is zero legalized bribery (i.e. campaigns financed by people trying to buy politicians) the partisan divide becomes far more narrow and the quest for common ground becomes far more hopeful/possible.
From Frederick Douglass
The Record and the GOP
JC. what in God's name are you smoking? Clearly you didn't read the REcord when the GOP was in control...or you couldn't possible make such stupid, ill informed remarks. The Record blasted the GOP on many things, and openly campaigned for Democrats...The problem is that J. Ferriero is not what they had in mind when dreaming of Democrat resurgence in Bergen....They wanted Weinberg Liberals, they got Hudson County liberals. Sarlo is afraid to talk to any media unless it is a controlled situation and very scripted....
As for Bergen Pines... you are clueless. You must be a member of the union. The D's have had five years to straighten out any problems.. in that time there have been at least two suicides, a few escapes and security breaches....not to mention a  campaing congtribution scandals. What did McNerney do about the contract with Bergen Regional...nothing,,  Â
