Kean fires England, support staffers

The word came down from Sen. Thomas Kean, Jr., on Tuesday.

Trying to change the look of the GOP Upper House team, the incoming Senate Minority Leader fired Rick England, a political operative who was director of constituent relations, in addition to several members of the minority office's support staff, Republican staff sources say.

While there is speculation that Director of Research John Hutchison is also slated to lose his job, he was absent from work on Tuesday and his status is unknown, according to sources.

Averting a firing, Communications Director Mike Jennings told PolitickerNj.com that he has accepted a communications job with PSE&G.

"I'll be starting the job at the beginning of the new year," said Jennings.

Sources say John Samerjan, executive director of the Senate Republican Minority Office, will be removed under the new regime. On that front, a fight goes on in the caucus between Kean, who favors as Samerjan's replacement attorney James Harkness, and some of the senators-elect, including Kevin O'Toole, who like John Kingston, the Assembly Republican Research Director.

O'Toole has been outspoken in his criticism of the business-as-usual appoach to life in the minority, and resistant to Harkness in part because of what he cites as the professional company he keeps.

"Jim Harkness sits in the Assembly balcony with his client, an anti-death penalty group, meanwhile, the GOP caucus will vote to keep the law intact," O'Toole said on Friday as the Democratic Majority sought to abolish the death penalty in New Jersey over the ultimately unsuccessful entreaties of the minority party.

Sources said Harkness has the edge over O'Toole's preference Kingston, and that he participated, along with Kean and Sen. Joseph Kyrillos in drawing up the designs for Tuesday's firings.

"I have no comment," said Harkness when asked about the status of the executive director's position on Tuesday. "Someone else has that job right now."

Kean and Kyrillos could not be reached for comment.

Maybe thats why Kean couldn't find Hutchison...I bet if  he looked for the Director of Research he would have found him...

Hutch...

John Hutchinson isn't a bad guy and is very knowledgable.  Among the core group of folks down there, he would be one to keep.  He's always bristled behind the scenes at the inaction of Samerjan and others in the Minority Office.  The office was very much split into factions over the past few years (no big secret) and much of the reason that anything got done at all was due to Hutchinson.

If I were Kean, I'd keep him.

Hutchinson...

I agree.  Of all the people in that office, he would be one of the few actually worth keeping.  Mainly because he is one of the few people in that office that acutally WORK and doesn't use being in the Minority as an excuse to sit on his butt....

Kean would be wise to keep him.  But maybe asking Kean to be wise is a tough sell.

Wherever the posts from Cinci and Fedup are coming is where you will find Hutch.

Not even close....

Don't work with Hutchinson, never have.  But nice try.

O'Toole

He wants to complain about the company people keeps?  Really?  Big Steve Adubato isn't exactly the most Republican guy in New Jersey.  Don't know Harkness, but I think he's held jobs in Republican legislature and governor's office before going to private sector.  And I bet he's not the only lobbyist who represents a client who he doesn't agree with.  Seems like it's not credible to whack him for that.  Afterall, you don't hear O'Toole calling for Dale Florio to step down as Somerset GOP Chairman!

O'Toole IS business as usual...

so much for changing the business-as-usual attitude in the Statehouse. O'Toole is already peddling the hypocrisy. So, let me get this straight...it's not okay for former lobbyists to become staffers...but it's okay for former lobbyists to sit side by side with O'toole and govern in the Senate? Maybe he forgot where Kean, Beck and Baroni got their starts...?

Time to clean house...

and I'm glad to see young Tom has the guts to do that. There's been dead wood in the NJ GOP for far too long.

Oh, no.  Not me my friend.  I don't work with Hutchinson.  I've just been around the State House enough to hear and see a few things.

Cheers!
