Kean hopes to regenerate against Genovese

Challenger Gina GenoveseChallenger Gina Genovese The battle with Bob Menendez may have ended in a loss for District 21 State Sen. Tom Kean, Jr., but, "I never left the ring," he says as he faces the immediate challenge of Gina Genovese, a former Long Hill Township mayor.

Insiders in both parties say they anticipate Kean winning comfortably in this Republican district. The strategy for Democrats is to keep him occupied here on his home turf, tied up and busy for the next month - and maybe leave him bruised and with sore hands as he heads back to Trenton.

That’s Genovese’s job.

A small business owner and former pro tennis player with a world ranking of 150 in 1981, the 48-year old Democratic challenger says she’s better prepared to represent the district than Kean, son of former Gov. Tom Kean, who can talk about affordability as the top issue out there, but who doesn’t feel it like the average voter, in her view.

"He’s never done anything," she says of Kean. "He was appointed to the Assembly and he was appointed to the Senate. I’ve worked six days a week for 25 years. I grew up in the 21st district. I’ve been drawn to politics."

Kean, 39, who in 2003 won the Senate seat to which he was originally appointed, argues he has been a driver behind ethics reform in Trenton. He says he pressured Democrats to do something about pay-to-play at a time when the issue was hardly on the radar. His lament now is that the opposition party hasn’t enacted real reforms to break up the aggregates of power created by multiple-office holders.

"The dual office ban that was signed grandfathers dual office holders into perpetuity," says the senator. "The governor did not perform a service by signing the bill. He has the Constitutional authority. He should have vetoed that bill."

While his government ethics crusade has played well in his home district, statewide last year Kean found himself in a quixotic flounder, trying as a Republican to connect voters to ethics issues as the Iraq War loomed over everything. Running his U.S. Senate race on a platform of anti-corruption, he called in Sen. John McCain to lend his voice to an ad on his behalf. "I’m telling you right now," McCain said, "we are in a period of corruption."

Meanwhile, polls showed the American public resisting the Bush administration’s wartime policy - which Kean and McCain backed - and Kean got caught in the Bush blender.

For her part, Genovese entered politics in Long Hill at the same time a certain president was turning sour in New Jersey.

"George Bush is the reason I’m in politics," Genovese says. "Iraq was the issue that called me to action."
A self-described fiscal conservative and moderate to liberal on social issues, she joined Howard Dean’s ’04 presidential campaign because the former Vermont governor was the only credible candidate against the war, in her view. She ran for Township Committee and won, and later served as mayor for a year. Before she stepped down in June to focus on her Senate campaign, Genovese handled three municipal budgets and two failed school budgets that went to the Township Committee.

In the wake of his ’06 loss to Menendez, which Kean’s supporters say was more a function of Bush’s intrusion than anything, the senator has run from the foot-soldier tag that last year dogged every GOP senate candidate.
While the Sierra Club has long supported him, Kean wants there to be no doubt that he breaks with Bush on environmental issues, as he sponsored the Global Warming Response Act, which Gov. Corzine signed into law.

"It sets emissions reductions targets for 2020 and 2050 that will be continually monitored by the legislature and the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection)," says Kean, who was very happy with the bill despite criticisms from within his own party, notably from Assemblyman Michael Doherty and Assemblyman - and potential U.S. Senate candidate, Joseph Pennacchio.

Kean and Genovese part company significantly on asset monetization. Kean is outright opposed to the leasing or selling of the Garden State Parkway and/or the New Jersey Turnpike, for a lump sum of money. But Genovese says she wouldn’t dismiss the governor’s monetization plan.

"There’s a huge debt load looming," she says. "You have to punch the numbers. I’m a business owner. If I start talking like that, I need to stop." If Genovese beats Kean it will be an enormous upset. Bush may have sunk one of his campaigns. It’s doubtful he’ll get deep-sixed again - not in a race for the State Legislature. "I’ve worked hard, brought the issue of ethics to the fore, and will continue to do so," says Kean, very possibly in the role of Senate Minority leader, according to insiders, where he could bulk for a few years and prepare for a future statewide contest.

Not if Genovese can help it.As she did last week with a challenge to Kean to give $10,000 back to fallen U.S. Sen. Larry Craig (Kean refused), she means to keep him engaged. "I’ve energized a lot of people, a lot of kids," she says. "Life is about being in the game. There’s no losing here. The worst case scenario is I have 50-100 kids who are excited about politics."In any case, she doesn’t intend to see her district remain red without a fight, and Kean doesn’t intend to go anywhere but back into the fray.

Junior will rebound and then some

His father ran for a Congressional seat unsuccessfully before he became Governor so this is nothing new to the Kean family.

Gina Genovese stands no chance and probably won't even win the town she was Mayor of. After the election, we probably won't even remember her name.

The only reason she's attacking Kean's warchest is because she lacks the funds neccesary to be even remotely competitive in this race and the Democrats aren't stupid enough to waste money on her. She's simply making a feeble attempt to level the playing field.

She's already in Kean's rearview mirror and he will be moving on to bigger and better things when the time is right.

Definitely

Kean has learned from his "youthful political indiscretions" and is echoing his father's salient inclusive Republican politics.

Gina Genovese, on the other hand, has nowhere to go. If she stays in the center, she is the same as Kean and loses because he is the incumbent. If she moves left, she excites the folks at Blue Jersey but the 21st is not the Village and she loses.

Don't be surprised to see Kean as a gubernatorial candidate if Christie doesn't run. If he stays on the 2007 message he can be formidable.

Kean's youthful indiscretions

How will he explain the real youthful indiscretions when he runs for higher office? Rumors have been knocking around for years that he had a couple of run-ins with the law and got sweep under the rug by pulling a few strings. One thing to get caught with the blunt another thing to get daddy to run up to college and get you ushered out of the legal system without a messy appearance in court.

10/08/07 12:11 pm

Oh, give me a break ...

Kean's reform plays well in the district? He wins because he is a Republican candidate in the 21st, not because anyone cares or even knows about his issues. What the campaign last year proved about Kean is that people don't buy him as a reformer.

Who would after he ran away from both Iraq War soldier's mother and the Vice President?

Genovese is right that he's never won an election that wasn't handed to him. In 2000 he got whooped by a nobody in Mike Ferguson for the Republican nomination for Congress. Then he got appointed to the Assembly by party insiders, and then appointed to the Senate by the same party insiders.

Yeah, he won reelection to those past two jobs but there was no real competition. If he had faced a primary like he did for Congress in 2000 he might not have won.

Kean has not proved that he can campaign hard or well, getting beat whenever there is real competition and doing the minimum necessary in easy campaigns.

The only thing he has going for him is his Dad, and that's worn off.

The real Gina

Will the real Gina Genovese please stand up? FIrst off, let's start with why Gina is involved in politics. Here is a quote from The Advocate, July 4th 2006 ""As (Howard)Dean and her guests mingled in the high-ceilinged living room of her home atop a winding lane overlooking the surrounding woods, Genovese had an aha! moment. It's not enough for LGBT(lesbian gay bisexual trasgender) families to keep trying to help progressive politicians win elections, Genovese thought. "At some point we have to fight for our own rights," she says. "It's not fair to say to someone else, 'Stick up for me.'" So Genovese decided to run as a Democrat for a spot on the local township committee. And she didn't try to hide her personal life."" And her full page newspaper add for her Ocean Grove fundraiser this summer stated that her three top issues were MARRIAGE EQUITY, school funding, and the environment. Yet Marrriage equity is not even listing on her website as an important issue!!!!! ALso, ask the residents in Long HIll Township what type of politician she is and they will tell you that she is the dirtiest of the dirty. Gina and her Long HIll campaign manager have been involved in the most disgraceful, evil attacks in the history of the town. They've tried to secretly(until they got caught) place flyers around town with false accusations about their opponents and they've called their opponents employers with outrageous lies to try to get them fired...just to name a few!!!!! Beware of who Gina really is... a politician willing to do ANYTHING to get elected!!!!!!!!

Wait, you mean Gina Genovese is a lesbian? No one knew! You've revealed to Rosetta stone to American politics! I feel validated and enlightened! Oh, thank you for telling me this fact that has been in just about every article written about her.

And, shockingly, the only evidence anywhere on the web of your accusations of flier fraud are in your comments or other comments on web sites. Looks like you are a busy poster!

Maybe if there were EVIDENCE that things happened as you said they did and not just your partisan accusations you might have something. As it is you are just whining.

the real Gina

Unfortunately, our local paper The Echoes Sentinel does not archive information online. However, you should be able to go to most local libraries and find all of the past articles. To help your search, Cecilia Cilli was her local campaign manager and David Welch was the mayor which they tried to do the smear campaign about. I also believe that there was an article in the Daily Record(which also is not archived online) about whether cecilia Cilli illegally was trespassing on David Welch's property and whether or not the LOng HIll police should have been involved in investigating the anonymous flyer.
And while your reading the past Echoes Senitnels look up the issue where gina states that her wonderful 17% budget increase that she worked so hard on was "bare bones". Then read the issue where one of the other committeeman was able to easily bring that 17% to only a 5% increase. ALso, read the issues where Gina touts about her "great negotiating abiltie" in being able to have someone donate back to LOng Hill one of our original town fire trucks. Then read the issue about how this tireless negotiation was with Anthony Spendorio, the developer who wanted to build 250 condos at the edge of our town's entrance to the great Swamp wildlife refuge. There's so much great reading regarding her 1 term as mayor!!!! Too bad for Tom Kean that we have such a small town paper and all of our town's archived history isn't available for all of district 21 to read!!!!!!

Heh

Genovese is a lamb being led to the slaughter... her politics don't fit the district and she won't be elected.

Kean will cruise to victory.

The guy is 39 years old, with one of the best name's in politics (especially among senior citizens who vote and remember his dad)... 06 was his first entrante into statewide politics... the stuff about him taking on Lance... well, it seems he's not cowering in a corner.

Where are the Republicans?

The Silver Spoon's only quality is his daddy's name. What is worse, his daddy was the beginning of the RINO train that decimated our party. It started with him and went into overdrive with Christie Whitperson, now Republicans stand for nothing and can't get elected. We keep trying to fool the public offering them candidates that are political hacks rather than prinipled Republicans.

If we ever want to turn New Jersey Red again we will have to dump our own garbage before the Democrats do it for us.

Apparently Joe T. is working on the Genovese campaign...

Joe you need to start amending your sentences to include the words, in my view, attached to everything you spew out.

Apparently a principled Republican must agree with everything Joe says..just ask Steve Lonegan who isn't conservative enough for Joe.

Guess that makes like five principled republicans in New Jersey..

What ever happened to acceptance?

Greetings From Long Hill Township

Here in Long Hill Township (LHT) the townsfolk have no idea what the issues are in this race, and most don't care. They just pull the lever for whichever candidate their own local party is endorsing. What most people outside this small enclave of political surrealism don't realize is that more than 50% of voters here are independents. Typically, they lean toward the Republican camp.

Research suggests that name recognition is the leading factor in voting decisions. This theory would predict that Genovese should win Long Hill Township by a landslide. So why is everyone predicting that she is going to lose her own home town? Are pundits suggesting that citizens in LHT are going to vote against their own former mayor?

LHT's Republican Mayor George Vitureira hosted a fundraiser for Tom Kean ( I think it was either last weekend or the weekend before), and, according to my sources, Kean, somewhat jokingly, raised his index finger, pointed it at the Mayor, and said something to the effect that he had better not lose LHT. That he was being forced to expend resources in a town that should have been a slam dunk must have made him pretty sore. Why would he be sore? After all, it wasn't the Mayor's fault that Gina was running against him, was it?

For those of you who don't understand, or really give a crap, about the politics of a small town like LHT, I don't blame you. The machinations of the LHT political machines are strange in a homespun, average thinking, Andy Jackson kind of way. Both sides of the aisle have problems. Both sides have pesonalities. Both sides have problem personalities. Both sides make mistakes. In this township, the side that makes the fewest and least severe mistakes usually wins. Both sides of the aisle benefit from this fact.

The question voters who live outside LHT should be asking is, why would a former mayor drop off the township committee to run against Kean? It would seem like political suicide. What was her motivation for putting a political gun to her head and shooting herself? And what is the connection between her motivator and Kean's index finger?

In last year's election for township committee, our current Republican Mayor ran alongside the Democrat, Collins, promising a united Democrat/Republican governing body that cared more for LHT than partisan politics. The local and county Democratic Party backed this unholy alliance, as did half of the Repbulican party; the half that backed the Mayor. However, the "old school" republicans who had lost much of their power when Vitureira was elected, were quite vocal about their displeasure. It nearly tore the party apart.

And after Vitureira was elected, it got worse. Republican Party county officials had to "visit" and recommend that everyone bury the hatchet. No one ever expects campaign promises to be kept. However, they don't expect them to be broken the first time their newly elected official sits down! It was obvious from day one that there would be no cooperation. The decision to back the opposition party's candidate was being questioned by both sides. I believe it is apparent now what a bad political strategy that turned out to be.

Unfortunately, the democrats made the more severe and a greater number of mistakes this time around. Genovese was caught between a rock and a hard place. She lost the mayorship in a 3-2 township committee vote that was strictly along party lines. She and the other democrat, Collins, claim that they were given the "revised" proposed township budget by the Mayor only one hour before they were expected to vote on it.

Some believe that the Republicans on the committee crossed the line between just outside of acceptable ethics and just inside the Open Public Meetings Act. So rather than stick it out in LHT and continue fighting for those who believed in her, she decided to run away from home and join the circus. She didn't even locate her campaign office in LHT; she put it in Berkeley Heights where she has her business. When the going gets tough, the tough quit and run for an office they have no hope of winning. I'm not quite sure if this story has a moral. Maybe the moral is that "you can't fool all of the people all of the time"; but I don't thnk so. Personally, I belive that is why we are in Iraq.

Maybe the moral is "never give a sucker an even break"; now that would be more like it. But that one is somewhat lacking in depth. I think Winston Churchill was close when he said "A good argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with an average voter." Had he included five-minutes with an avarage politician as well he would have been right on the money!

the flier allegations are true

Hey tompainelht,

The flier accusations are true. It was Cecelia Cili who confessed! she told me personally that she had to lay low for a while at a meeting in Gina's livingroom.

As for the new president of LHT's democratic party (is she Gina's campaign manager too?), Sue Collins (wife of the township committee member Chris Collins who admitted in front of about 20 democrats in Gina's livingroom that he made a mistake backing the republican candidate Vitureira), she is somewhat lacking in ... uh ... everything!

As for the rumors about Genovese being dirty, well, that is just par for the course in LHT.

I still love your moniker!
