At a press conference in Somerville, Republican leaders today denounced Kate Whitman’s negative attack ad as “dishonest” “outrageous” “desperate” and a “new low”.
Whitman’s 30-second cable TV ad makes no mention of her own candidacy for Congress and is the exact type of campaigning denounced by her mother, Governor Christine Todd Whitman, in a recent post on her internet blog entitled “Reject Nasty Campaigning” (1/18/08 – 4:54pm politickernj) .
Senator Tom Kean Jr said, “Leonard Lance has been New Jersey’s leading fiscal conservative for the better part of two decades. He has opposed all broad based tax increases in Trenton, has fought to reduce wasteful spending and successfully sued Governor McGreevey to stop his illegal borrowing.”
"I am disappointed by the negative campaign policy of Kate Whitman." said Assemblyman Eric Munoz M. D. "I have the utmost respect for Leonard Lance as a man of principal who has been fighting for taxpayers his entire career, even voting against his own party during the 1997 pension bond issue."
In recent weeks Whitman suffered a series of major defeats in the Republican County Convention process -- most recently by an almost 2-1 margin to Leonard Lance in her home county of Somerset.
“This is a new low and a desperate move. Leonard Lance has voted for lower taxes and against higher taxes almost 100 times. He is a conservative with a proven record of voting with the taxpayers time and time again,” said Assembly Republican Conference Leader Pete Biondi “Kate should stop her negative ads which are completely misleading and apologize to the voters for taking the race into the mud.”
“I am truly disappointed that Kate’s campaign would use negative tactics more associated with Hillary and Bill Clinton’s desperate attempt to keep their grasp on political power” said Senator Kip Bateman “These charges are outrageous distortions that impugn Leonard’s impeccable record of public service. Kate knows that. She should stop. The voters deserve better.” Bateman concluded.
