At the beginning of this campaign Kate Whitman promised to run a positive campaign saying Senator "Lance is a statesman … any primary with him in it will probably be the best-behaved primary anyone's ever seen." (12/3/08 Express-Times). A promise she has already broken with negative ads that distort Leonard Lance’s record.
Now it appears Whitman is prepared to make her false attacks far, far worse. In the last week our campaign has received numerous reports of people receiving polling calls with very negative questions and statements, many shocking and untrue.
Since Whitman’s false attacks began elected officials and Republican leaders have called on her to end the negative campaign. Congressman Ferguson said ‘it was very disappointing to see Kate’s ad because it’s misleading and false. The fact is that Leonard Lance has been a taxpayers’ champion in Trenton for years.” (Courier News, 4/18/08).
“We hope Kate doesn’t take another turn to an even more negative level. It would be bad for the Republican Party as a whole,” said Assemblywoman Denise Coyle.
And Sen. Kip Bateman said, “Kate seems willing to say anything regardless of the facts just to win this race and it’s very disappointing. The voters deserve the truth.”
“A promise to run a positive campaign should be a promise voters can count on. How can we believe anything Kate Whitman says if the very first promise she made in politics she breaks,” said Assemblyman Peter Biondi.
The answer is you can’t. And what we do not need is another politician who will say and do anything just to get elected.
“We hope Kate doesn’t again renege on her promise. It’s not too late to do what she first pledged and give the voters what they are looking for…a positive campaign,” said Lance Campaign Manager, Amanda Woloshen.
