With Levy gone, the fight rages on

The two most public men in this hour of political reckoning battled in Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy's absence today.

Levy, who's rumored to be the target of a federal probe into his alleged mischaracterization of Vietnam service in order to collect thousands of dollars' worth of benefits, has not reported for work since Wednesday. Mayor's spokesman Nick Morici this afternoon said business administrator Domenic Cappella told him the mayor is officially on "medical leave," and the mayor's lawyer, Edwin Jacobs, did not return phone calls.

With Levy gone from the public stage, Democratic Assemblyman (and former Atlantic City Mayor) Jim Whelan today again called on the mayor to clarify his situation and resign if the rumors are true, sparking Sen. (and Egg Harbor Township Mayor) James "Sonny" McCullough to hit with the charge that Whelan is using Levy's apparent political demise to grandstand in their District 2 Senate race.

Whelan, who is the only Atlantic City Mayor in recent years not to leave in handcuffs or in ethical trouble, said, "There is a cloud over the city. I just think the city, which is the economic engine of this district, cannot afford to be paralyzed while this thing is played out in silence, denials, charges, and claims of innocence."

McCullough said Whelan was "stabbing his old friend in the back" and questioned why Whelan couldn't find Levy and personally inquire about the mayor's situation, or even contact his wife, as opposed to making a major case.

"Why wouldn't you call your best buddy up?" McCullough wondered.

GOP campaign manager Ed Kline hit Whelan on the Levy connection in a press release he issued today on behalf of McCullough's District 2 team.

“As Mayor of Atlantic City, Whelan hired Levy, assisted him politically, and was one of his strongest supporters when he ran for mayor.  But, aside from their strong political alliance, Whelan and Levy worked together on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, they rowed together on a regular basis, and their spouses are close personal friends. Yet, at the first sign that Levy faced potential legal or criminal difficulties, Whelan danced to the tune of his Camden County benefactors and turned viciously on the man he called friend for so many years."

In response, Whelan said government service is not about protecting friends but serving the public interest.
"This is not about my past relationship with Bob Levy," said Whelan. "I’m baffled that my opponent believes Bob Levy is supposed to get special treatment because Bob Levy is my friend.

"He's the mayor of Atlantic City," Whelan said of Levy. "He can't be hiding while this is out there."

Levy's handlers told Whelan the mayor is in the hospital. "I feel bad he's in the hospital," said Whelan.

Professional associates confirm that the mayor has been in ill-health with back problems and - according to McCullough -blood clots on his lung.

But sources say that the mayor's absence this week likely has to do with his knowledge of the federal probe, and his reluctance to pull the plug on staff who will be dispaced by his resignation.
Council members who lent their names to a recall-Levy effort have shown little sympathy for his physical ailments.

Hey SJBlue, Whelan is already running... from his record.

how long

did it take you to come up with that real knee slapper. Whelan was a tremendous mayor of Atlantic City, worked hard to rid the city of Callaway and his cronies and has served admirably in the Assembly, I'll admit he has taken a few lumps-but so did Bill Gormley in his day. Whelan is a tough and practicle politician. I only hope he knocks out Van Drew for the Congressional seat in 08.

Paris Hilton

Dear SJBlue, Even Paris Hilton knows that Frank Lobiondo is the congressman from the 2nd district (where Whelan lives) NOT Jeff Vandrew. You probably also think McNabb will be pitching for the Phillies today. By the way, Whelan won't be running for congress because his puppeteer GEORGE NORCROSS, the guy who is spending millions and millions of dollars to get control of Atlantic Coounty will never let Whelan run for congress. Remember, Calloway supplied Whelan with the thousands of absentee/messenger ballots he needed to win his seat in the assembly. Whelan gladly took those votes. Only now does he find Calloway to have an odor of rotten fish.

Actually

Frank Lobiondo's district encompasses all of Atlantic, Cape may, and Cumberland Counties. In both State Legislative Districts 1 and 2. Lobiondo is the Congressman from Congressional District 2. I was saying that I hope Whelan gets the Dem nod in 08 not Van Drew. As a matter of fact if you look at the polling numbers-Whelan had less absentee ballots counted for him than the local candidates in Atlantc City in 05. Calloway used to follow Whelan around with a bull horn calling him a white devil and calloway never helped Whelan. My apologies for not being the moron that you think I am.

No need to apologize because

No need to aplogize because you are. 1. VanDrew is not a congressman as you indicate. He is in the NJ General assenbly. 2. Whelan and Ron Ruff (Democratic party chairman) gladly accepted every Calloway messenger/absentee vote. 3. Perhaps Lindsey Lohan could help you learn to write with more clarity

Very Good

I doubt anyone on this cite finds me unintellegent-but your bredth of pop culture knowledge is impressive nevertheless. As I have always said about insults and personal attacks on this cite, they serve no purpose. While you make a nice argument based on semantics, you have said nothing that invalidates the core of my point. Insults do nothing to further your message, I think we can all agree to that. If you insist on still using them, thats fine. I have thick enough skin.

SJ Blue:

   Your spelling, grammar and thoughts.

thanks

I'll make a note next time to make sure my spelling and grammer are more up to par-curious though, how do you know what my thoughts are? I know you read several of my opinions-I figured since we're being small about this issue I would point that out. I'll stress again, your attacks really make you look bad. I'm here arguing opinion and politics and I never fall back on personal attacks-I let my opinions stand on their own without trying to trash my opponent. Whether you argee with me or not I feel no need to trash you. I understand if you are not "there yet", but when you are ready to debate without resorting to childish name calling, look me up. Until then feel free to keep reading.
