Littell asks state GOP for ban on outside work

Formr Republican State Chairman Virginia Littell, the wife of State Senator Robert Littell and the mother of Assemblywoman Alison McHose, wants the state GOP to "ban employees of the NJGOP from seeking outside campaign consulting contracts with candidates or committees active in Republican primaries."

During this cycle, the Republican State Committee Communications and Research Director, Todd Riffle, was also a consultant to Guy Gregg's campaign for State Senate. At the time Riffle was first paid, Gregg's opponent was Littell, a legislator since 1967.

Dear Republican Leader:

As a former Republican State Chairman, I read with interest the recent e-mail sent out regarding consultant Kevin Collins and his actions in the 40th district race for State Senate. Many have described the campaign Collins ran as racist, and there have been calls for him to be sanctioned by the New Jersey Republican State Committee (NJGOP).

I would like to draw your attention to another controversy that took place earlier this year. You might not have heard about it at the time.

My husband, Senator Bob Littell, is a 40 year veteran of the Legislature and a respected member of Republican leadership. In December of last year, Assemblyman Guy Gregg paid Todd Riffle, an employee at the NJGOP, to conduct opposition research on my husband, an incumbent legislator seeking re-election.

The campaign waged against my husband at the time focused on his age and health -- particularly his hearing loss. We read about it on the blogs and the opposition used code words in public to make its attacks. I thought there was too much emphasis on my husband's hearing disability, too much on his age. I believe ageism and racism are both discriminatory.

In light of this incident, I would like the NJGOP to consider passing a resolution that would ban employees of the NJGOP from seeking outside campaign consulting contracts with candidates or committees active in Republican primaries. I think that this would remove a clear conflict of interest from our primary process, and would allow the NJGOP to remain focused on its goal of electing Republicans across the state.

Thank you,

Mrs. Virginia Newman Littell
Former Chairman, NJGOP

Virgina Stick It

Actaully makes sense.

Why would NJGOP staff take sides in primaries - does demosntrate a conflict of interest.

Pulaski must work for NJGOP to be that vicious to a person who has worked vary hard for the GOP.

Issue is debatable - tone of response too harsh.

Ginny in a Glass House!

Hey Ginny -

How about banning GOP Senators, or all Senators for that matter, from being paid as lobbyists?

You 2-faced knucklehead. Whitman was right to get rid of you when she did.

She has a point

People that work for state committee should not work in a primary against another GOPer.

Wilson should fire Riffle, upgrade staff

It's not like the Republican State Committee was doing so well in their campaigns that Riffle should have had the time to do outside work. He's paid a full-time salary. And while he was doing op-research on Bob Littell, Republicans were losing in countywide races in Atlantic, Cumberland, Salem, Monmouth and Burlington, some by narrow margins. So maybe if Riffle was doing his job, the state committee could have helped GOP win.

That's the same thing that happened at the Bush event. The TV news trucs were being kicked off the property, while Riffle was walking his kid around so the 4 yr old could meet the President and Rove.

Wilson's next term should include a better team.

Bergen Prince is correct, in addition,  the shameless tactics of some GOP egomaniacs, who practice crude politics is reason Republicans are leaving the party in droves.

No "Ageism" Here

I agree with her request about NJGOP employees. They should not be active for pay on the side in primaries.

But let's chat about the age issue. There was no whisper campaign, just people observing the obvious. And it was not a supposed opponent - Let's be HONEST FOR ONCE - it was every republican that ever saw the senator in public - friend or foe. It is not "ageism" to point out that the sitting senator does not always seem to be present mentally when he is present physically. It is important to remember that Sen Littell is still the sitting senator for the 24th district, with full responsibility to act on behalf of the district in a budget process that is grueling. I hope nothing is wrong, but Mrs. Littell is the only one that ever brings up the subject of his health - and does so constantly. She is the only public mouthpiece for her husband. No press is allowed to talk with him. If something is wrong, which Mrs. Littell seems to champion, I would hope that they would have the courage that Ronald and Nancy Reagan had when they told the world of the president's infirmity. The constituents rallied around with moral support and honored the man who served the people so well. It was a good example to those in public office and to the public. Maybe it is something to think about. If Sen Littell is unable to fully function to the full extent necessary, shouldn't he (and his wife) show equal respect for his contituents?

Time for Littell to step down

Oroho won the primary, give him the seat now. Littell is clearly unable to do the job, unless it involves voting with the Democrats which he is excellent at.

Scoraig,   obviously you are unaware of the Littells ambitions, "LETS HANG ON TO WHAT WE'VE GOT" appears to be the words they live by.  While I respect the Senators public service,   Nancy and Ronald Regan they are not.

Sore Winner

Sadly, Ginny Littell has now managed to politically mimic the peculiar testosterone-related phenomenon sometimes associated with the ardent fans of a winning sports team – engaging in anti-social behavior following the victory. Thus, by this letter, Ginny has tagged herself as this year's classic "sore winner."

The following may come as a shocker to some -- given the salvos aimed this way just a few short months ago -- but in stark contrast to Ginny’s broadside, stands a recent action by Bill Winkler, the consultant for the Oroho team.  Very early in the morning on primary election day, Bill sent a gracious "win or lose" e-mail to both Guy Gregg and Dick Kamin, acknowledging the competitiveness of the race, and even attached a funny video clip reminder of a common battle yet to come (2008).

Of course, Ginny could point out that her battle is hardly done. She’s currently pushing very hard to become the county chair of Sussex, and she is actively supporting the candidacy of Peter Mancuso to replace Tom Wilson as the State Republican chair.

Hence, her thoroughly overblown "resentment" aimed at Todd Riffle for engaging in a small research contract for Guy Gregg, way back in December, and reported in Gregg’s first ELEC report. Riffle did absolutely no additional work for the campaign thereafter, despite repeated claims to the contrary by Ginny, et al.

She and the campaign systematically squeezed every bit of political benefit they could from that, including launching a series of highly personal attacks on Todd. He held his fire throughout, as perhaps he should have. My own view is that it is certainly commendable for a young guy whose wife is having a baby to feel obliged to provide for his family.

If the State Committee wants to ban outside work by employees, they should do so, and employees should have that understanding when they sign on to a restrictive contract.

Ginny obviously understands family fealty, having repeatedly (and falsely) claimed, including in this latest missive, that there was a coordinated campaign to malign her husband on health and age grounds. The sad truth is that Ginny never missed an opportunity to bring that subject up, and she extracted whatever political gain she could from it.

But the clear implication in her letter that Todd was hired to gather ammunition for an attack on Bob’s health and age, is really shameful. She knows better.

And her statement that there was an inherent conflict in Todd doing $2,500 worth of work, really rings more than a bit false. Some wag might even be tempted to say that in crying conflict, the ex-lobbyist is making a Hamburg Mountain out of a molehill.
