State Sen. Joe Pennacchio won the Middlesex County Republican convention today, getting 121 votes to rival Murray Sabrin’s 45.
Candidate Andy Unanue, who remains on vacation in Colorado, did not send a representative to participate in the convention. His name was not on the county committee’s ballots. Nor was John Crowley, who was vacationing out of the country until he returned yesterday and is expected to enter the race as early as Monday.
Pennacchio has already won the party line in Bergen, Passaic, Hunterdon and Union counties.
“Middlesex is a huge part of that puzzle,” said Pennacchio, who’s focused his campaign on Democratic-leaning counties. “You start coloring all the Pennacchio counties and you’ll see that Joe Pennacchio has terrific people – terrific support behind him.”
Pennacchio thanked Middlesex Republican Chairman Joe Leo for keeping the process open to anyone who wanted to participate.
Sabrin said that he would have preferred the format be that of an open debate, as it was in Gloucester County two weeks ago, where he beat Pennacchio to win the county line. His spokesman, George Ajjan, who spent the morning in Cumberland County, said that the showing Sabrin got was promising.
“It shows that even among insiders there are a sizable percentage who agree with Murray that the establishment is broken and that we need new leadership,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Cumberland County Republican Party, which also held a convention today, decided to defer its endorsement for a Senate candidate until members have a better idea of exactly who’s running. They also formally elected a new county chairman: Doug Sorantino.
“All I want is a fair shot, and it looks like Cumberland is giving us a fair shot,” said Pennacchio, who was represented there by campaign worker Steve Kush.

Who else is on vacation?
"Meanwhile, the Cumberland County Republican Party, which held a convention today, decided to defer its endorsement for a Senate candidate until members have a better idea of exactly who’s running." I think they want to know who else is on vacation?
Sabrin
Sabrin should not have been allowed to participate. He was allowed to participate only by getting petitions from the registered delegates attending. The only problem is he didn't get the petitions signed the right way. The petitions didn't say what they were for. Additionally many of his people didn't tell the petition signors what it was really for. I doubt he would have gotten the required signatures if they were honest in the way they obtained the signatures. His vote count was only 45. Thats likely well under the required signatures.
Apparantly the rules and fair play are something Murray doesn't seem to care about.
Murray if you were so smart you wouldn't have needed petitions to participate. Stop bashing others candidates and distorting the truth. Learn how to campaign. Its easy to cheat and bash others in an election. A real leader competes with fairness, class and dignity. You'll never win anything acting the way you do.
But wait you know everything already. After all you are a professor at Ramapo College. Ramapo is an impressive institution of lower learning with an average SAT of 1190. You get 600 for signing your name. The national average is around 1500. Sorry the rest of NJ doesn't have the brain power of your students. We're smart enough to see the truth. You might consider reregistering as Dem. The Dem base is full of brainy folks like your students.

I was standing next to Sabrin when he was approached by the County GOP representative, and told that they "didn't receive his letter", which would have enabled him to speak. This occurred at the last minute, after Sabrin had been in attendance for over an hour - I find it hard to believe that Sabrin didn't file to speak.
I also witnessed his people working to obtain the necessary signatures, and in all cases, they were not only up front about what they were circulating, but were also wearing Sabrin campaign buttons! I saw no violation of the rules, and I think it's a testament to his supporters that they were able to pull the signatures together in the short time they had. If there was any nefarious action here, I tend to believe it was on the part of the MCRO.
I agree with you though, in regard to the press releases from Sabrin's people (and I do note that these are from his people, and not directly from Sabrin himself, though ultimately he IS responsible). I don't feel that the rhetoric of the campaign staff mirrors the demeanor of the candidate himself. I've found Dr. Sabrin to conduct himself in a very composed and dignified manner on the occasions that I've had to meet and speak with him.
Wrong
According to http://www.ramapo.edu/parents/guide/faqadmissions.html , Ramapo students have an average SAT score of 1170 (580 in critical reading, 590 math).
The national average of those two scores is around 1000. Ever hear of 1600 being a perfect score?
1500 is the national average of the combined averages for math, critical reading, and writing.
Pennacchio on the rise
Tom Wilson's pathetic attempts to bring these unvetted, untested, unknown alternatives, like Unanue and Crowley to the front have backfired. Looks like people are coming home to Jersey Joe.
Joe Leo
Good job. He deserves credit for letting things just play out.
No pay offs or buy offs. He just let the committee members vote.
Why wasn't a surrugate there for the Goya Guy?
I guess when you can't buy the result why bother.
Joe Pennachio will show these GOP Leaders that he is in touch with the common person in NJ , and his class so far is refreshing despite the snubs and lack of respect shown him .
The areas he is doing well are places you have to win in the general election.
Maybe it's time the GOP in NJ rolled up it's sleaves and raised money and worked instead of waiting for a sugar daddy to bankroll everything.
The people are not stupid and they usually vote for the person they think understands them in a general election.
Maybe if Joe is given half a chance he can demonstrate he has the right message with the middle class voters in this State.
GOGOP
I was there also and I witnessed his campaign being upfront with people when getting the signatures. It was a last minute problem and a solution was given as a choice to rectify the situation. No violation was committed.
One thing I did witness however was Penn's crew making a big ruckus talking loud and filing out of the room as people were trying to listen to what Murray had to say. That was rude. I made a mental note of it. Anyone with that much audacity, whether it was him or those sticking close by him, is not on my favorites list. Those people should be ashamed of themselves. They acted like spoiled children.
From what I've seen and read
I don't think that Murray or his supporters are in any position to comment on people being rude or classless.
Funny
I never said who I supported in that post...I just said in a round about way that I wanted to hear what EVERYONE had to say like the majority of those who attended. Secondly, how one acts in public is a preview and not once did I see any of Murray's supporters out of line as such. I see a lot of bashing here but with little backing or respect for either candidate. That in itself is not only futile but classless as you would understand. I gave backing by stating the details of a personal experience. The adjective matches the behavior not the person. Maybe you read into that too much. I personally do not like Penn and I truely do not agree with what I saw today but I'm not calling him names as some of the names I've seen Murrays been called. Just because the man is stirring things up doesn't give anyone the right to flame. Remember, those in glass houses should not throw stones.
Home turf for Jersey Joke
Isn't it a home turf for Jersey Joe? No wonder they tried to derail Sabrin and the others just did not bother to show up. It is hard to show up especially when you are on vacation or not decided yet.
GOGOP took a cheap shot at Dr. Sabrin. If I were Jersey Joke's supporter I would be pissed off too. However, it is GOP establishment that you should take it out on not on decent people who are following the rules. By the way, thanks to Dr. Sabrin, we know now about Jersey Joke's philosophical thoughts, and Andy's "the bean" Unanue problems. We should tank Dr. Sabrin for doing work for several law enforcement departments in NJ and NY. I hope we know the results soon. Please, check the housekeeper as well (Mexican?)
We also know by now what the NJ GOP etsblishemnt has in plans for all of us: fire sale of GOP to the highest bidder (no matter who that person is).
Good Grief
There's that paranoia among Sabrinistas coming out again. There was nothing "nefarious" going on with the MCRO. The convention started at 10:15 and Sabrin's people were getting signatures to allow him to participate by 9:15, when I arrived there and was asked to sign a yellow sheet of paper on a legal pad with nothing written on top of it. So no, Murray was not told anything at "the last minute."
Furthermore, I think it's a testament to the fairness of the convention's participants that Sabrin was able to get the required 60 signatures because he received far less than 60 votes. Clearly, people signed the petition with no intention to vote for him solely because they believe in the process and that everyone should get a fair chance to speak on their own behalf. Kudos to the MCRO!

What is the "There's that paranoia among Sabrinistas coming out again." ...and why? I'm pretty much new at this and would love to know what you see that I don't. All I saw is what I said I did and as for the signatures, I heard them ask more than one person so it wasn't a one shot deal. True, there should have been something on top of the page, but I'm not going to contend that. Seems the only ones with the problem are the ones that didn't sign. Why didn't anyone say to put something at the top of the page and tell them they needed it if it wasn't a problem. Why didn't the Chairman tell them to do it before he sent them out to get the signatures? If it had even crossed my mind I would have made sure they did that before I signed and before I walked away. There's no paranoia in that. I don't know, maybe I'm too honest and too observant for the politics game.
As for what Wel said, I totally 100% agree that we need to knock off the cheap shots in here...from both sides. Do you people honestly think that either candidate wants that? No, of course not. And yes, Dr. Sabrin made us aware of Penn's manifesto and Andy's residence problem. I thank him for that. The only problem in that is the manner the press releases were handled. Murray is out to make his name known and he's done a good job at it. Unfortunately, some people were turned off at the way it's been presented. The guy really isn't a monster the way some have painted him to be. If the GOP picked someone without a poor history, who was a worthy of the Republican Party, I bet Murray would be happy to debate and run against him. The problem is, and I agree with this, no one they have picked so far should even be a republican or have even thought about running. No paranoia in that either.
Oh, and yes, Kudos to the MCRO. They did an excellent job.

I'll have to contest your point about "paranoia" - and I'll agree with your timeline, that Sabrin's people were given roughly an hour to collect signatures and fork over money, in order for him to be allowed to speak.
However, my point was, I find it odd that on the home turf of Pennacchio, the MCRO leadership tells Sabrin an hour before the start of the convention that they "didn't receive" his paperwork, and that he wouldn't be allowed to address the convention without jumping through last minute hoops. I could certainly be wrong, but I very much doubt that the Sabrin campaign forgot or failed to file the paperwork that would allow him to speak at a convention, which they had planned to attend for at least several weeks.
This type of antic serves to confirm for me the general antics that we've witnessed the NJGOP undertaking over the past several weeks. The leadership seems determined to deny Sabrin any chance in this race, and it's just not clear to me why - this process began well before any of the inflammatory, yet very informative press releases from the Sabrin campaign (the tone of which also turns me off, by the way).
Sabrin's stand on the ISSUES certainly seems to me to be more in line with the traditional GOP values than those voiced by Pennacchio, or the non-positions of Estabrook, Unanue, and potentially Crowley. I don't mean to lump Crowley in prematurely, but he fits the pattern so far...
limited kudos
And yes, I also agree with you that I think the general participants in the convention were very fair, open-minded and welcoming. I noticed as well, that they were very willing to sign Sabrin's petition and allow him the opportunity to speak. It was the County leadership whose actions appeared suspicious to me.
The Paranoia. . .
The paranoia is in your questions. . . "Why didn't the Chairman tell us how to make the petition. . . why didn't they tell Murray that they never received paperwork, etc."
There's no responsibilty on Murray's part to contact people and follow-up on things or to ask about the rules. It's everyone else's fault.
Finally, Pennacchio is from Morris County, northern Morris at that, so Middlesex is most certainly not Pennacchio's "home turf." But again, you try to downgrade the opponent by making that false claim, as if his win had nothing to do with his message and everything to do with his locality. If that's the case, shouldn't Murray have won Bergen County? Hmmmmmm. . .

More Paranoia
"It was the County leadership whose actions appeared suspicious to me."
"Suspicious actions?" No paranoia on your part, right? Everyone in a position of leadership is out to get Murray, but there's no paranoia.
"A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have.” - Thomas Jefferson
paranoia
I don't see how it's paranoia - I was making statements based directly on my observations, which I don't think are irrational.
I have seen that Sabrin has been in the race for some time now, and for whatever reason, the GOP leadership seems willing to do anything BUT consider getting behind him, despite the fact that he would appear to represent what they say they stand for better than any of the other contenders.
I saw that Sabrin was at the MCRO Convention yesterday for over an hour before any of the County leaders told him that he wasn't going to be allowed to speak.
I've heard many people mention that "he can't bring the money", yet from all indications, Sabrin is the ONLY GOP contender for U.S. Senate who has had any kind of action in the realm of public donations - and this is entirely without GOP establishment backing.
Yet, again and again, we witness the NJGOP chasing after these individuals of the big checkbooks and questionable merit.
If that's how you define paranoia, then I guess you've got me...
SAT's
Dear Ramapo Graduate.
Sorry to inform you that was the previous SAT system which had total score of 1600. The new system is 2400. Ramapo's average is way below the national. Do your research.
I believe Ramapo will be changing its class designations from Freshman, Sophmore, Junior and Senior to 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th grade.
Murray truly is an intellectual giant at Ramapo.
Why????
Why don't people tell Murray how to run an election?
Why don't people tell Murray how politics 101 works?
There were tons of candidates at that convention. Six or seven from the 7th congressional alone. Many new to politics completely. How come they knew what the Sabrin team didn't? Don't blame incompetence and sloppiness on anyone but yourselves. Your running for US Senate not Freshman Class President in high school.
Fact - the petitions circulated didn't have the reason for the petition on them.
Fact - I was approached by some one who totally skewed the truth when requesting me to sign the petition.
Not sure where you were? Did you see the petitions?
Murray was there? Did he see his own petitions?
