Pennacchio in it until June 3rd

United States Senate candidate Joe Pennacchio wants to make it clear that, even if Princeton biotech executive John Crowley gets into the race, he’s sticking it out until the June 3rd primary.

“The only constant in this entire race, with the 15 or two dozen people who have been in and out and in again, is Joe Pennacchio and his campaign,” he said. “I will be there June 3rd, so I welcome everybody and a vigorous campaign based on issues.”

Although Republican sources said that some Pennacchio campaign staffers were giving thought to throwing in the towel at the prospect of a Crowley candidacy, those close to Pennacchio insist that he never considered it himself. Instead, he spent Sunday going door-to-door in Newark, Orange, East Orange and South Orange to shore up support in areas Republicans generally give up for lost.

Rival candidate Andy Unanue was said to have considered giving up his candidacy and throwing his support behind Crowley.

Unanue's campaign manager, Mark Duffy, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Crowley’s life story -- leaving a lucrative position as a pharmaceutical executive to start a string of biotech firms to raise money to find a cure for his children’s rare Pompe disease -- made him a virtual rock star among Republican circles. His decision not to run on Monday morning led to a number of phone calls from nationally prominent Republicans who urged him to reconsider. And today he appears to be doing just that.

“I don’t know if he’s going to stay in or stay out, but every time I turn around, it’s another self-financed candidate,” said Pennacchio. “You can excuse me for not paying attention to that anymore.”

Two steady candidates

Jersey Joke is right, he is the only steady candidate in the race. That's where the joke is. There is also Dr. Sabrin - steady, dependable, and knowlegeable on the issues. That does it. We want a realtor Ann, a skiier Andy, and now "Ask me some more" Johny come late "maybe I am running".

Is it a curse of self financed candidates that the NJ GOP is under or is it just plain stupidity? What say you? Who does Tommy have to kiss before the spell is removed?

Speaking in 3rd person...

I like that in my elected...candidates... talking about oneself in the 3rd person..."Joe Pennacchio and his campaign,” he said.

Jersey Joe... let's face it at least some money will be needed to get the message out and be competitive...

Sen. Lautenberg: $6million+... Andrews: $ millions..

State Sen. Pennacchio: ???

Money is important

But so is a legislative record which is what makes the decision on who to support so tough. Having said that I went to the FEC's website and discovered that in a race that Jersey Joe had no shot of winning he loaned himself at least $176,000.  That tells me he's got some seious cash somewhere to loan himself enough to really kick start his campaign if he needs to. Now, I'm back to thinking it's the guy with a record.

Nice Strategy

Although a minor point in the article, I am impressed with Pennacchio's presence in Newark, Orange, and other urban areas. This is something Republican candidates should focus a bit more on. Nicely done.

He shoulda campaigned with David Lyons in Irvington..

Maybe he could re-develop Irvington with his labor camps?

"$176,000 Serious cash"??

Add a zero and maybe, maybe you're on the path to begin to be taken serious... As much as we all talk about "legislative record" seeing someone raise or have $2 million is always a positive feeling, it means people believe... having $250,000 means people don't think you can win... also Sen. Lautenberg will be all over tv for like 3 months...Joe Penn will have to be also but that costs money...

Joe will pick up

money after the 8th.  People are holding back because they don't know how the bosses will to try to sabotage his campaign until filing.  Murray's people are not a threat because the don't have boots-on-the-ground as Joe does.
