Senate candidate Murray Sabrin plans to attend the Somerset County Republican convention tonight, but he may not be allowed to participate.
Republican Chairman Dale Florio told Sabrin spokesman George Ajjan that Sabrin is welcome to take part, but only if he pledges not to run an alternate slate of freeholder candidates.
The convention will formally endorse a U.S. Senate candidate, along with a Congressional candidate in the seventh district -- which is expected to be the real contest of the evening.
“They could not commit to me that they would not run a slate of candidates, so I advised them that they would be unable to participate in our screening process,” said Florio.
Ajjan said, however, that Sabrin plans to show up anyway, with every intention of addressing the gathered county committee men and women.
“We’re going there and expecting to have the opportunity to addreses the committee of somerset county,” he said.
Meanwhile, potential Republican candidate John Crowley is not expected to attend the event, according to Florio. While the county will endorse a candidate tonight, the Chairman reserves the right to give someone else the line before the filing deadline.
“Truth be told, you really don’t have to finalize your ticket until your clerk goes to print – as long as candidates are filed as of the 7th,” said Florio. “I would just think that if he’s going to get in, he’s cutting it a little close.”

Makes Sense
It is hypocritical of Murray Sabrin to campaign for the county lines while all the while running his own slate of candidates against the county lines.
It makes no sense
If prohibiting Dr. Sabrin from speaking (yes speaking) makes sense than awarding a line to somebody who does not show up and did not even filed for the US Senate makes no sense. However, it is me an average Republican. Chairman Florio has other ideas that make sense according to his way of thinking. The same way of thinking that has made us successful in last 6-8 US Senate contests.
Do not forget about Democracy and party primaries. Even Democrats began their own primaries in earnest. However, will they follow Chairman Florio?
Well
Murray Sabrin's way of thinking has made him unsuccesful in his last two campaigns, and he will probably be unsuccesful in his current one.
Dr. Sabrin unsuccessful?
I do not recall Dr. Sabrin running as a Republican before or I am mistaken. This time, as a Republican candidate, Dr. Sabrin will have all mighty NJ GOP behind his candidacy. The same way that Schundler had in his gubernatorial race.
Unless, Tommy et al. have some other plans.

HAHAHAHHA. Seriously? The NJ GOP that Sabrin has threatened to destroy? Good luck with that.
You're Right
Murray ran AGAINST a Republican back in 1997.
Once Again Eric is Wrong
Once again Eric is drinking the establishment Kool-aid ..
Murray Sabrin is running as a Republican and therefore should be allowed to speak to any audience that features Republican voters that offers an opportunity to run on an "official" line.
No pledges need to be made from any candidate that proposes to run on another line, it is still the Republican party Eric, just not your version of the party bosses establishment kind..
And to those who asked in previous comments, Murray has ran twice before, both as a Libertarian and a Republican.
Isn't "Goya Boy" going to be there?
Oh I forgot he just usually gets the County nods while being away.
I see that
the sabrinistas continue to avoid taking any responsibility for anything.... murray is not losing because the establishment is out to get him....he is losing because he has run a horrible campaign
Democracy or Communism in Somerset?
You can only speak to us if you pledge to not break from the party line!?!
The guy is a legitimate candidate and should be allowed to speak regardless if he is going to run his own slate.
Florio? Democrat? Communist? Certainly not GOP Chairman?!?
What is he so scared of?
Granted Murray should be allowed to speak, but ...
... he is employing the tactics of a banana republic revolutionary leader in seeking the GOP nomination. There is nothing new about attacking one's own party or the ruling class (i.e. threatening to run a slate against the party establishment) then screaming that you've been wronged when they play tit for tat by using their institutional power to somehow cut you off at the knees (i.e. not letting Murray speak). In essence, Murray is going out of his way to make himself persona non grata to the organization and then crying foul when they retaliate.
Any student political psychology recognizes this tactic for what it is. It attempts to build cohesion amongst the faithful -- in this case, the Sabrinistas -- by cultivating an "us against them" mentality to acheive a goal. It also attempts to cast Murray as David going up against Goliath, which always plays well to the American conscience. The problem is, within the parameters of a particular closed system -- in this case the NJGOP -- even if successful, this strategy ultimately works to fracture any potential future unity going into the general election. In defeat, this disunity is used by the losing candidate to deflect any responsibility for the loss from him or herself. You can bet the house that if Murray garners the GOP nomination, runs in the general under the Republican banner and loses miserably to Andrews/Lautenberg, not even a single Sabrinista will blame Murray for the loss. In fact, they will be back the next election cycle pumping Murray as the only true savior of the Grand Old Party. Thus it is always to zealots.
Why can't Murray run a slate of freeholder candidates?
The idea of a convention is to decide the line assignments of competing candidates. Primaries are for the party voters to decide. Somerset GOP is a real pack of anal retentives.
Heck, I think Murray is a schmendrick. But not allowed to speak for this reason is corrupting what little process is left in GOP elite. Having a challenged primary is what gives free publicity. I find it contradictory in a party that doesn't want to pay a candidate's way.
Let him speak
I heard Dr. Sabrin debate at the Gloucester County Convention and there were many town committee members that voted for him. He won not because of his campaign tactics, but his ideas. There seems to be a desire to prevent him from speaking. Why?
To deny him a chance to speak is pure bull. If your county line is solid then it does not matter who runs what against them. Who is to say there will even be one offered? I don't recall the Gloucester GOP having a separate line.
Can anyone identify what results these party "bosses" have produced in the past 11 years that requires everyone bowing down to them?
If Dr. Sabrin was trying to upset the applecart on a successful venture, I would understand the angst. But he is not. He is pointing out abysmal failure.
So the GOP is supposed to continue marching to this failed drummer and ignore all facts?
