Pennacchio gets another county line

State Sen. Joe Pennacchio won Somerset County tonight, easily rolling over his only opponent, Andy Unanue, at the Somerset County convention.

Pennacchio won almost 80% of the vote, getting 247 votes to Unanue’s 51.

Pennacchio already has the county line in Passaic, Bergen, Middlesex, Hunterdon and Salem Counties, along with hometown status in Morris County.

In his speech, Pennacchio repeated what he says is the need for Republicans appeal to moderate Democratic voters, and added a line showing the frustration he’s felt at watchingthe party establishment continually search for self-funding candidates instead of settling around him.

“I am the only one running who has the experience but so far the only knock on Joe Pennacchio is that he cannot self-fund his candidacy,” he said.

Unanue, who will start be in New Jersey tomorrow after returning from  vacation in Vail, Colo., was represented by his close friend, Bergen County Republican Chairman Rob Ortiz.  He has the county line in Ocean, Cape May, Atlantic, Monmouth and Hudson.

"Tonight you have an obligation to pick the candidate who can win statewide. That candidate is Andy Unanue," Ortiz said.

Absent was Senate candidate Murray Sabrin, who was barred from participating because of his threat to run an alternate freeholder slate against the county line (Sabrin won the Gloucester County convention last month).  His spokesman, George Ajjan, was not happy about it.

“While 4,000 New Jersey families prepare to defend Democracy and freedom of speech in Iraq, a tobacco lobbyist blocked freedom of speech and democracy right here in Somerset County.  Shame on (Republican Chairman) Dale Florio.”

Perhaps as a sign of things to come, petitions were circulated for the potential candidacy of Princeton biotech millionaire John Crowley, while at least one operative close to his advisor, Bill Spadea, attended the event.

There’s speculation that if Crowley listens to the prominent Republicans who are urging him to run, Unanue, a former classmate at Bergen Catholic High School, may consider dropping out.

Comments

John Crowley

If the vote in Somerset County is used as an indacator, political insiders must know John Crowley will decline to run for the U.S. Senate.

State Senator Joe Pennacchio announced today he is in the primary election to the finish.

If committee people had any reason to believe Crowley would run, the committee would have voted for Andrew Unanue at the Somerset County Republican convention.

How do you hand Joe Pennacchio the county line and then tell him we found a better candadate, you don’t.

If they handed Andrew Unanue the line and he dropped out in favor of Crowley, the committee would be able to save face.

My bet is Crowley is not running.

GOP madness rolls on in the USSR

"Pennacchio won almost 80% of the vote, getting 247 votes to Unanue’s 51." Dr. Sabrin was barred from running. Nationalist Pennacchio wins 80% of the vote, absent Andy "the bean" Unanue gets 51 votes.

"Tonight you have an obligation to pick the candidate who can win statewide. That candidate is Andy Unanue," Ortiz said. Why would Andy win statewide? That information was missing. It is enough that the leader proclaims that.

"petitions were circulated for the potential candidacy of Princeton biotech millionaire John Crowley." Who controls that chaos? Call in the Secret Police. Who allowed these Democrats here? Why Jersey Joke got only 80%, it was supposed to be 99%. Who screwed that up? Who alowed this guy Crawley in here? He was not there? He is not running yet? What is going on here. Let's call the KGB in here to clean up this mess.

Why Republicans are looked upon as crooks.

Regardless of anyone's personal opinion of Murray Sabrin, doing what Dale Florio did tonight was borderline facist in my opinion.

What was he afraid of? That Somerset County Republicans may actually vote for Murray?

And who is he to think he is so important as to levy such a requirement?

What I don't understand is this. Dosen't ANYONE in the Republican Party realize that because of actions like these, it creates a poor impression upon our voters?

The party is dying a slow death in New Jersey, and yet, instead of applying transparency to what the party does and encourage new membership, instead the very few will continue to stroke their own egos, all the while the ship is sinking.

I'm prediciting a huge Democrat win come November. The excuse that "New Jersey is a blue state" is a crock, and the world that the Republican Leadership lives in, will continue to shrink around them.

Great Job Guys, what a disappointment.

I agree.  What has the running for a Federal post have to do with those running for County posts?

I could care less about Murray and his loudmouths.  Yet, this was plain wrong and stupid.  Dale should be ashamed of his sorry butt performance.

Mickey Mouse lives

The candidate they claim has no shot at winning is denied the chance to address the GOP rank and file.

The NJGOP is in for a trouncing in November, purely because they cannot claim they have any morals or ethics.
