Rob Andrews finally got an answer from Frank Lautenberg about participating in debates, but it wasn’t the one he wanted to hear.
The Lautenberg campaign yesterday turned down a debate offered jointly by Richard Stockton College and the Press of Atlantic City, saying that the dates offered- May 5th and 6th – conflicted with Lautenberg’s Senate schedule.
“When I got into this race I challenged the incumbent Senator to a minimum of seven debates. He has danced, bobbed, weaved hidden and we really had no answer until yesterday,” said Andrews in a conference call with reporters. “Yesterday, for the first time, we have a definitive answer, and it’s the wrong one.”
The invitation was open ended when it was first made earlier this month, but after not hearing back from Lautenberg for about a week, organizers set the dates. Press of Atlantic City political editor John Froonjian, who helped organize the event, said that, had the Lautenberg campaign told them that the debates conflicted earlier on, they would have been able to offer alternate dates.
Andrews called the refusal “outright disrespectful to the people of our state.” When asked by a reporter, he said that he’s not calling on debates in order to contrast his own age (50) with Senator Lauteneberg’s (84). But he did acknowledge that age is a factor in the race.
“Age is an issue in this race, and it’s an issue for the voters to decide the impact and effectiveness of that issue,” said Andrews.
He was joined on the conference call by state Sen. Jim Whelan.
“Quite simply, I believe not debating is a disservice to voters,” said Whelan. “If you’re going to be a candidate for any office there is a responsibility and an expectation that there will be debates.”
Whelan said that, if anything, having a debate in South Jersey would be advantageous to Lautenberg, since it would give him the opportunity to make inroads into Lautenberg’s base of support.
But while Andrews had called for a minimum of seven debates, Whelan signaled that the campaign may be willing to accept a few less.
“If not seven debates, let’s have three or four debates,” he said. “One here in the south, one in central and one in northern Jersey.”
Lautenberg’s campaign has previously responded that Andrews has spent more time politicking than casting bills in Congress, noting that he missed all the House votes last week. But Andrews today did go to Washington today to cast votes, including a genetic testing bill and a student loan bill that he helped usher through.
Andrews Campaign Chairman Mike Murphy noted that presidential contenders Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are both members of the Senate, and they’ve found time to engage in 21 debates.
Lautenberg spokeswoman Julie Roginsky said that she was talking with debate sponsors about dates, and that the Lautenberg camp would sit down with the Andrews camp to negotiate them. Andrews has said that he’ll accept any debate from a credible organization at any time.
“What would be disrespectful for the people of New Jersey is if Senator Lautenberg had skipped the votes in the Senate to the campaign, which is exactly what Rep. Andrews has been doing,” she said.

WATB
The only issue Andrews has is debates. Lautenberg should just agree to two at the end of the month and get this over with.
Whining about debates is always the cry of a losing campaign.
Why won't Frank debate?
What is he afraid of? Is there an actual fear that hyper puppy Rob Andrews yapping at his heels is unnerving this titan of legislative magnitude? Dude, just DEBATE. Slap him down. If he can, old man.
Too tired to debate?
Lautenberg owes the people a debate. We're tired of his excuses...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m-Ca0jT7zc
John Ashcroft should run.
What are the topics of the debate? If andrews says, "I will bring the troops home from Iraq." Why would anyone believe him? What would be the topics? andrews could say, "I would work with my fellow Democrats to bring the troops home." Why would anyone believe him? Certainly, his fellow Democrats would not believe him. Let's vote.
Mumbling Frank is thinking about debates.
What should I mumble about today? I am a US Senator therefore I have to go to Washington, DC to vote. What are the votes about? I have got to vote. That's my job, to represent NJ and its blue collar and working people, I must vote in Washington, DC. I have to be like Obama and Clinton, who have been campaigning for two years, had 21 debates and jet around the country for weeks at the time. Hey, I am Frank and I have got to vote. No time to debate. What are debates about anyway? I already told you blue collar and working peole of New Jersey.
outrageous
Andrews is taking this too far. This is getting out of control. A disservice to the voters is penning the iraq resolution, its being part of the southern machine, it's having your wife on the ballot as a placeholder for your seat, it's getting votes wrong time after time.
and i will say this till the end of this election, THIS SITE IS BIAS towards Andrews. Lautenberg does not have a DUTY to debate, Andrews has a DUTY to vote. And right after you note he missed a WEEK'S WORTH OF VOTES you make him seem like a hero for showing up to vote on a piece of legislation he worked on. I bet he showed up to for the iraqi resolution.
I am so tired of this site and it's obvious slant towards Andrews. Anyone that cant see this is blind. BLIND.
so HudsonBlue, are Hiliary & Obama shrieking duty as well?
They have missed just as many (if not more votes), no? Don't they have a duty as well?
Is the site biased toward Andrews? Well, I think they are giving him A LOT of coverage, that's for sure. More than the state media. I mean, look at the polls, Lautenberg has a lead based pretty much on name recognition.
That said, Lautenberg (or anyone, and that includes Obama) should answer the call from a legitimate candidate when challenged to a debate. Seven debates? No, that's ridiculous. Two would make sense, even one. But he has to debate him. Is it duty? No, you're right. But c'mon. There's a spirit of the situation thing here. But Frank's being challenged - he should be a man and answer that challenge....
Senator Depends!
Pssssssssssssssss.
A calculation has been made...
...that Lautenberg is mentally and/or physically unable to debate. There is no other explanation, pure and simple.
fair points, but wrong
while i understand your point, my comments have been about this race. you, in your argument, expanded the scope of discussion to issues i'm not concerned with right now. neither hillary clinton nor barack obama, as of right now, represent any part of the state of new jersey and this is a new jersey political site. so unless there is a post about one of them, this state represents the scope of my opinion.
as for your comparison to presidential debates, i think they've proven how useless debates can be. all they do is argue over he said, she said issues, and hardly discuss any policy related items. (yes, they do, once in a blue moon, i said hardly, not never)
now, i will concede a point in the spirit of gamesmanship. i think one of the reasons they are doing this is that in Frank's position, he doesnt need to debate. my problem is with Andrews not letting it die. He has ONE MONTH to win this primary. if you back andrews, you should be more concerned with reaching out to voters and building name recognition. while debating would be the easiest way (and the cheapest) it's not going to happen. And the truth is, any incumbent would do the same thing. While, everyone here would like to see blood on the debate floor, it's not going to happen. As mad as it may get you, it's a political move. Do you think if Chris Christie was in this race he would debate Murray Sabrin? You would be out of your mind to think so. Frank is out there at campaign events and voting in washington, so to say he's not out there or that he is hiding is a misrepresentation of the truth.
with all that being said, i still think this site is bias towards andrews. not only does he get a lot of coverage which you've mentioned, but it's almost always positive. i pointed out in one of wally edge's posts that he was being unfair by criticizing Frank's campaign schedule, but not detailing what Andrews was doing and that there seemed to be a bias. That post was subsequently taken down. Just look and see for yourself. You're obviously allowed to disagree with me. It's not a shock i support Frank, so maybe I HAVE A BIAS. Then again, this is all just my opinion. I see it the way i see it.
No
Politically speaking debates only only only ever help the candidate trying to catch up in the polls. Lautenberg is crushing Andrews. Furthermore, Andrews registration in the polls is hardly better than Donald C's no one is chomping at the bit to see FL and DC go at it. Andrews campaign is a joke. He got in too late, didnt get any organizational support from the State party, or County parties north of Camden. He is going to lose, and the reason that he wont go outright negative is because Norcross has already shifted focus and is building a state organization so his favorite toy (Rob Andrews) can run for governor. Lastly, as I have stated before Andrews' only issues are age and just how much he hand Frank agree. The debates will highlight littel differences. Frank has been a tremendous Senator for the state of NJ, Rob has been a sub-par Congressman-and that is the real difference here.
last point
if you want to talk about "spirit" or "being a man" i dont think Andrews was much of either when he waited till the last possible second to enter this race and when he did so, having his wife act as a placeholder for his old seat. he knew Frank was 84 earlier this campaign season, he knew there was a feeling of "change" in the air, so why wait? so no one else could get into the race.
i like how byrne, who was the spark that lit andrews candidacy, was campaigning with him the other day. because of byrne, andrews claimed, people called him to enter the race. how convenient it is that they are now allies. does no one else think so?
Point is, dont call Frank a coward or weak or scared, Andrews recent moves to smell of strength and courage, just political maneuvering. It therefore doesnt make sense for him to get mad at Frank for doing the same.
Lautenberg by 5 points!
Andrews can't catch up screaming in the wind..too little too late. Thought I do think Frank is looking very hypocritical considering how he ran against Millicent fenwick.
Im Voting for Rob Andrews!
To "Mom in Law":
I am voting for Rob Andrews for U.S. Senate over Frank Lautenberg. In today's politics, Rob Andrews demonstrates an accountability to his constituents that seldom seen. I have been fortunate enough to meet Rob and know that he is a man of Character, intelligence, and compassion. In my humble opinion, there is no other choice for U.S. Senate!
Larry
Is Roginsky for real?
The most overrated Dem consultant is also one of the worst spokespersons on the clock!
What is her point? Doe she have a point? Andrews is missing votes?
Isn't that the case for Obama, Biden, Clinton and Dodd?
When will the fossil address the issue of age? He's the one who brought up Fenwick's age 26 years ago!
When is going to explain away his unconditional support for Joe Lieberman, the GOP keynote speaker for John Mccain?
Didn't Lautenberg endorse Lieberman for president in 2004?
Guess that wasn't in Julie's talking points...
Vote Column "A" - All the way!
Simply too Old
Frankie is losing it as anyone of his inside supporters know all too well. The libs want him to hold the seat, while the moderates want and deserve change. Somebody wrote, "Senator Depends", how appropriate! Andrew's needs a new hair stylist to win and "Granny" needs to give it up to the more moderate. Obama wants change, for what? NJ needs change, a moderate senator...
Andrews Out of Touch
Seems that the only person out of touch is Andrews. As someone who is in his District, let me tell you that he has never been around when needed, only cutting ribbons, doing special appearances, etc. The only person that truly has come out for our Districts have been Diane Allen, and Conners and Conaway. Rob has always been a no-show when things need to get done. Big case in point: We have good friends living in Delanco. There was a big meeting that they attened last year to complain about the noise of the light rail. Allen and Conners showed up, but Rob was a no show. Last I heard, Andrews still has a few of the River Towns in his District, but he has a poor record of doing anything. So the question is for those voting in the Democratic Primary, do you really want someone who is in name only?
