Sabrin's odds are 20-1

Murray Sabrin prides himself in his support for fiscally conservative government policies, but he’s being quite liberal with some of his campaign donations.

At a press conference in Atlantic City today, Sabrin announced that all the money he raised during an internet “money bomb” between 2:00 and 3:00 this afternoon will be bet on a horse named Cowboy Cal at the Kentucky Derby tomorrow.

Sabrin spokesman George Ajjan is keeping the amount raised secret until tomorrow afternoon, when Sabrin will appear at Monmouth Park Racetrack to place the bet.

Sabrin tied the PR stunt to a call to legalize sports betting in casinos.

“This is another example of the federal government getting involved where it has no Constitutional basis,” he said. “It is time to get government off our backs and out of our wallets.”

Perhaps Sabrin, who polled 21 points behind Republican rival Dick Zimmer in a survey on the Senate race, sees a kindred spirit in Cowboy Cal, who’s far from a favorite for tomorrow’s race.

“At 20-1, if we can raise just $25,000 online during this money bomb and Cowboy Cal wins the Kentucky Derby, we will have enough money to win the Primary.”

It is in the Wall St. Journal. It was the buzz at work today; good PR stunt.

What are Joe's and Dick's picks?

05/02/08 4:56 pm

Dr. Murray Sabrin is the F-A-V-O-R-I-T-E to win the GOP Primary

Just because you quote an unscientific poll doesn't make it true - that poll only questioned 160 Republicans and had a margin of +/- 6.5%!

My money and my votes are on Maverick Murray for the WIN!

Go Murray Go!

05/02/08 4:57 pm

Forget the stunt - think about the issue

Let's think big picture here for a second - Sabrin said in his press release that he is doing this to raise awareness of government interference in gambling (sports gambling in Atlantic City, specifically) - why is sports betting illegal in Atlantic City Casinos?

Is the government really looking out for me by not letting me bet on the NFL, but letting me throw my money away in a slot machine?

"Special Interests" at work.

I'm an adult, let me gamble my money as I please.

05/02/08 5:05 pm

Taxes.

I have trouble understand why some gambling is illegal and other forms of gambling are illegal.. Not really,

It's what the government can easily tax that's legal.

But of course it's masqueraded as government compassion because "gambling ruins lives." But legal gambling, in casinos, ruins lives as well. If you've earned your dollar you should be able to spend it as you please or wager it as well!

I agree,

Go, Sabrin! Go!

05/02/08 5:07 pm

oops

"I have trouble understand why some gambling is illegal and other forms of gambling are illegal.. Not really,"

should read as

I have trouble understand why some gambling is legal and other forms of gambling are illegal.. Not really,

Smart Move

The GOP lost a lot of younger voters when the fake nanny-state liberal Republicans passed an online gambling ban in 2006. But since Murray is a REAL Republican he believes in personal liberty and that adults can decide for themselves! He is the only candidate that will motivate the youth here and re-build the GOP!

05/02/08 5:20 pm

Steeple Chase

Hey way to be creative in getting that un-earned media Murray!!

05/02/08 5:48 pm

found something we agree on

I like Cowboy Cal too.

05/02/08 6:34 pm

what a clown

What's he gonna do when the FEC slaps him with a giant fine for using campaign contributions to gamble? I'm pretty sure that this isn't a permitted use of campaign funds. This guy is an embar-ass-ment. Go back to your government job with your government pension and government (read taxpayer funfed) health insurance.

05/02/08 6:48 pm

The Sabrin candidacy.

How does a guy who's never registered more than 5% of the vote in any election he's been a candidate can be considered a frontrunner?

Sabrin is running an idiotic, stupid effort that seeks to shock than persuade. He's still registering in single digits no matter how much money he raises (most of it out of state).

Mr. Sabrin is not a stupid man, just a terrible candidate. He fails to connect even with the most conservative of voter.

Here's a bet, Sabrin doesn't receive 10,000 votes in the June Primary.

Vote Column - All the way!

05/02/08 7:28 pm

Good PR stunt!

Congratulations to Dr. Sabrin for this free PR. Definitely, Dr. Sabrin is a winner this week. I am not sure about legality of this bet, but apparently a lawyer says that you can invest your campaign funds even in such a way. I am sure that Frank is going to start betting on anything he can, if Dr. Sabrin's horse wins. On the second thought, Frank has already wisely invested in several oil companies. What a way to support our enovironment, blue collar and working men in NJ. Frank is a wise guy. However, he is the looser this week anyway and his campaign has reminded me of Titanic.

05/02/08 8:47 pm

Don't dismiss Murray

If this primary is a low turnout, Murray can win with a split regular GOP vote. For all his faults, he is keeping his name alive. Joe and Dick seem to be gliding toward June.

05/03/08 8:45 am

Fail = 21 points behind Zimmer

. . . this is not even a race.
What a fail.
Main beneficiaries of Murray Sabrin's "campaign": (1) George Ajjan (how much is Sabrin paying him for this waste of time?) and (2) NJ Democratz.

05/03/08 1:00 pm

Why not sports betting in AC?

I went to Las Vegas once and bet on the Red Sox in the World Series. Why can't I do that in New Jersey?

Why is that, Lautenberg, Menendez, Corzine, Whitman, Florio, Kean, Bush, Cheney?

America is a free country, leave us alone, you enemies of freedom!

05/03/08 2:35 pm

He lost...

Just like he will one month from now..

05/03/08 6:46 pm

Let's see how he reports this to FEC

Probably as a "promotional expense".

05/03/08 7:32 pm

Maybe he picks campaign managers . . .

. . . better than he picks horses!

05/03/08 7:34 pm

Cowboy Cal finished 9th

For the record, Cowboy Cal finished 9th out of 20 entries.

05/03/08 9:25 pm

Cowboy Cal in 2008

Cowboy Cal has better odds than Murray at winning the Republican nomination. At least the horse was never a Libertarian, although he did once run as an Equestrian.

05/04/08 1:05 pm

Good issue, bad execution.....

sports gaming should most DEFINITELY be legal in the state of NJ. The issue you keep running into are the NFL lobbyists that don't want to ruin the "game for the fans" (fans, tha btw, pay thousands of $$$ in seat licenses as well as subscription fees for the NFL network. Murray's right on this issue; with that said, he's MORE THAN A LITTLE FOOLISH to throw away $25k on a horserace, especially since the man clearly has ZERO experience with sports gaming. totally asinine move. Free publicity? Absolutely. The wrong kind of free publicity, the kind where you stop and say, "This ape is gonna be the one to get us out of the fiscal hole we've been dug into?" Absolutely. Bond-headed move in my book....but don't worry, folks. When someone really articulate and knowledable about both sports and finance is able to beat the sports industry lobbyists in the public forum as well as explaining to the powers-that be about the annual deficit this state finds itself in vis-a-vis money coming and going to the Federal Gov. from this state - sports gaming will become a reality......and you can bet on that. :)

05/05/08 6:27 am

The irony of his soon to be

The irony of his soon to be massive defeat would've been far more ironic if Murray had put his campaign cash on Eight Belles.

"Political correctness is tyranny with manners." - Charlton Heston

05/05/08 10:55 am

"Recapturetheglory" was more his speed.....

If he keeps pulling foolish stunts like this (and like the drinking age, etc.) even less people will take him and even some of his admittedly more sober beliefs seriously.

BTW, RECAPUTURETHEGLORY came in 5th.......

05/05/08 11:49 am

could Be good

From that article gambling may also the source of crime sometimes, then government preventing crime. Then now government building a gambling that make crime increase.
