Weinberg says Teaneck councilwoman should have apologized for 'gas chamber' remark

State Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) thinks that a Teaneck councilwoman’s “gas chamber” comment was not intended to offend her Jewish colleagues, but that Monica Honis erred by not saying she’s sorry.

“I think it was a slip of the tongue, and I think that she should have immediately apologized,” said Weinberg, who’s not endorsing anyone in her home town’s council race. “And if she didn’t immediately do it, she should have at the subsequent council meeting.”

At a block association meeting on Monday, Honis, who’s up for re-election, said that picking her and not her two running mates would be like sending her “to the gas chamber.” Honis’s Jewish counterparts on the council took offense to that statement, saying that it was an insensitive reference to the holocaust.

Honis said she was referring to capital punishment, not the holocaust. But she refused to apologize, according to the Bergen Record.

Although councilman Adam Gussen called on Honis to resign, Weinberg said that isn’t necessary, since voters can decide whether she’ll stay or go on Tuesday.

“I am very sad for Teaneck from everything I’ve heard about the last two meetings and what seems to be happening, at least amongst some people in terms of community relations,” said Weinberg.

Do we need Loretta's five cents?

The answer is no! Senator Weinberg should focus on her business of representing voters of District 37 and resolving their problems. For starters, I suggest property tax reform. Here Loretta has done nothing, that's zero for those mathematically challenged. Another problem is her Assembly running mates Johnson and Huttle and their ethical problems. Just to remind everybody. Assembly Johnson is a dinosaur holding two publically elected offices: assemblyman and councilman in Englewood. Let's be ethical Loretta! Assemblywoman Huttle has a tone of ethical conflicts related to her husband's activities in Encap. We hear that it went out to drain. Who is going to pay for it? Let's get ethical Loretta!

It is about time to be senatorial.

Wiel doesn't like Ms. Weinberg clearly

However, I think our society has become so politically correct that we might as well keep our mouths shut tight. Should Hollis have had to crawl into the head, hearts and minds of her collegues to know that this would have offended her collegues? I guess so! maybe her collegues were looking for a way to be offended. These people! Those people! Blah Blah! GAS PRICES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF AND THESE FOLKS QUARREL ABOUT WORDS!! WHERE"S MY PROPERT TAX RELIEF??? I NEED A GAS CHAMBER TO RELIEVE MY ANXIETY!

SewarenScoop, do you read

SewarenScoop, do you read what you post before you put it up? You know, the only thing more offensive than the gas chamber remark - keep in mind some of us have relatives who died in those - is the responses to it I've read here. Try to figure out that people whose parents died in a gas chamber might be just a little angry at someone who thinks losing an election is somehow comparable -- and that this reaction is not something you can slap a moronic label on and dismiss with a snort of your superior nose.

While the comments were quite stupid - does any find it funny how Gordon or Valaire get passes from their friend Loretta on there issues but Loretta speaks out on this.
