After less than six months on the job, Bergen County Republican Executive Director Matt Mowers is leaving his post.
Mowers, 19, will be replaced by Stephanie Derrig, 40, of Mahwah.
Mowers, a full-time student at Rutgers University who lives in Middlesex County, was hired in late December by recently ousted Chairman Rob Ortiz, who is expected to become the Republican State Committee’s finance chairman. His hiring was applauded by some who wanted to bring new, young blood into the party, but also brought criticism from those who felt that, as a student from a different county, he wouldn’t be able to devote enough time to the position.
“It was mutual. Nothing personal,” said Mowers. “I’ve got a surprisingly high number of offers right now. I’m not sure which I’m going to take yet. I’ve actually been quite flattered.”
Derrig has a bachelor’s degree in finance and risk management, and currently works as a realtor for Coldwell Banker. She’s a member of the Bergen County Women’s Republican Club.
“I am very glad to get this opportunity to work for the party that I believe best embodies the ideals and values of the American people,” she said in a press release.
Newly elected BCRO Chairman Bob Yudin said that Derrig’s business skills will serve her well in the position.

Bergen County's loss will be someone else's gain
Matt Mowers is a good political operative. I can understand why a new chairman wants his own person, but the Bergen GOP is losing a good person. Bergen County's loss will be someone else's gain.
