Kurkowski mounts longshot bid against LoBiondo

Congressional candidate David Kurkowski (D-Cape May): Campaign photoCongressional candidate David Kurkowski (D-Cape May): Campaign photoDemocratic Cape May Councilman David Kurkowski, who's challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Frank LoBiondo in the 2nd Congressional District, is facing the hard reality of the campaign trail.

So far, he estimates, he's spent most 90% of his time fundraising, and expects to make it just past the $100,000 mark by the Federal Election Commission's June 30th deadline.

"It's my first time doing this, and it's quite a learning experience to realize you have to spend so much time fundraising, but it's part of the reality," he said. "If you want this seat, you have to do this job."

The July 15th filing deadline for FEC reports is do or die time for Kurkowski, who's fought rumors that Democrats, optimistic about the national landscape, were angling to replace him with a more well-known contender like State Sen. Jeff Van Drew (who the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee courted to run for the seat), State Sen. Jim Whelan, Cumberland County Democratic Chairman/Freeholder Director Lou Magazzu, and Assemblyman Doug Fisher.

When he started his campaign, Kurkowski pledged to raise $1 million by the time it was over. That, according to Magazzu, is the bare minimum he'll need to compete against LoBiondo, whose current cash reserve of $1.4 million makes him the richest Republican congressman in the state.

Magazzu acknowledged there had been some "chatter" about asking Kurkowski to step aside and put someone else in his place, but "nothing really serious." He also noted that he's hired a crack team of operatives.

"Kurkowski's got Obama's pollster and Clinton's mail team, and he hired another guy who was involved I think in the upset in Mississippi," he said. "He started out doing all the right things. You then have to turn that into money and strategy."

But there has been one fundraising obstacle Kurkowski didn't expect: Barack Obama's decision to forego federal campaign funds.

"That's a monkey wrench that I hadn't anticipated, that I'd be competed with the presidential candidate for funds," said Kurkowski. "Some people I've talked to said they'd be willing to give but can't give another dollar."

taking steps to show LoBiondo the door

Certainly, defeating an entrenched (even if out of touch) incumbent like Frank LoBiondo is difficult, but I like the drive and initiative that Kurkowski has shown thus far. He's emphasizing fundraising and making smart hires for his campaign; he's put a lot of his own resources into the campaign, even if it isn't getting the attention of the 3rd and 7th district.

In previous articles, Kurkowski has rightly pointed out LoBiondo's unquestioning support of Bush's Iraq War and his policies there, and he's emphasized LoBiondo's role in providing no oversight in the Deepwater Coast Guard problems. LoBiondo is, contrary to popular opinion, not a moderate on many issues (stem cell research, abortion rights), and he needs to be taken to task.

Martin more Campaign posturing

Everything your saying is right out of a challengers playbook on how to out an incumbent. And it is from the DCCC's stance in 2006, with Iraq, Stem cell, abortion, which only comes up in an election year and put back away when the election is over. Now what I find amusing is you gonig after LoBiondo on the Coast Guard issue, which in Committee when he was Chairman all his bills came out of Committee without disention and on the house floor when it was put up for a vote his bills passed without a no vote. The Deepwater program is an on going process that deals with more about states rights and to make sure the spoils of dredging do not impact the environment in Pennsylvania, New York, and NJ. God forbid Lobiondo with Andrews, Saxton and Smith fight for what needs to be done for South Jersey, and yes that is right Andrews works well with LoBiondo. Why would you want someone like Kurkowski who has money and doesn't know what to do with it so he runs for office. And Van Drew just likes running. If you really are concermed about the 2nd district just move there and then I think finally I can have a great debate on what your Congressman does for you and your community. If not shouldn't you be more concerned with your own district, oh that is right it is a safe seat for a Democrat. Well maybe another time when you finally think for yourself and not spew the DNC/DCCC talking points.
