Newspaper endorsement roundup

Editorial writers from newspaper across New Jersey agree that Barack Obama should be the next president.

Newspapers vary on most other endorsements, however.

Below is a list of federal endorsements made by New Jersey papers and the two major out-of-state publications that cover New Jersey.

President

The Star-Ledger, Asbury Park Press, Bergen Record, Trenton Times, Gloucester County Times, Courier-Post, Vineland Daily Journal, Courier-News and Home News Tribune all endorsed Barack Obama. The Philadelphia Inquirer, which covers parts of South Jersey, backed Obama, as did The New York Times, which until recently covered New Jersey politics extensively.

John McCain has yet to win an endorsement from any daily newspaper that covers New Jersey.

U.S. Senate

Incumbent Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park) has The New York Times and The Home News Tribune, and Star-Ledger.

Zimmer has been endorsements by the Asbury Park Press, Philadelphia Inquirer and Courier Post coming out for him.

House

District 1

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-Haddon Heights) angered the media so much by reversing his promise not to run again for his House seat a that he has not yet won any endorsements from major newspapers.
So far, all three dailies that cover the area around the 1st Congressional District -- The Philadelphia Inquirer and Courier-Post and Gloucester County Times -- have endorsed his long-shot opponent, Dale Glading.

District 2

The Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-Vineland) over Democrat David Kurkowski, a Cape May Councilman.

District 3

State Sen. John Adler likes to point out his monetary lead. Now he can boast of a major endorsement lead as well.

Adler has been endorsed by the Press of Atlantic City, Philadelphia Inquirer, Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and New York Times

Myers won over the editorial board of the Asbury Park Press.

District 4

U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-Hamilton) was endorsed by the Asbury Park Press and The Philadelphia Inquirer over challenger Josh Zeitz.

District 5

The New York Times has endorsed challenger Dennis Shulman.

The Express-Times endorsed U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-Wantage).

The Bergen Record has not yet weighed in, but editorial page editor Al Doblin’s scathing column about Garrett could offer a clue.

District 6

The Home News-Tribune endorsed Republican Robert McLeod, a former Keyport councilman and municipal judge who has raised virtually no money against U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-Long Branch), a long-term incumbent with more money in the bank than any Congressman in the state.

But two another Gannett papers, The Courier-News and Asbury Park Press endorsed Pallone.

District 7

In this heated race, State Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Flemington) has an endorsement monopoly over Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood).

Lance won the endorsement of The New York Times, Star-Ledger, Courier-News, Home News-Tribune and Express-Times.

Stender hasn’t yet received a newspaper endorsement.

District 8

No endorsements yet

District 9

No endorsements yet

District 10

Even if local newspapers wanted to endorse someone other than U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-Newark), it would have to be a write-in candidate. He’s the candidate on the ballot.

District 11

So far, The Courier-News has endorsed U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-Morristown) against long-shot Democratic challenger Tom Wyka.

District 12

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt has been endorsed by the Home News Tribune and Asbury Park Press.

District 13

Didja Hear The One About...

The head of the New Jersey Outside Alliance supposedly stating on a recorded phone call that their endorsement of John Adler opened the political doors so that they could meet with Joe Roberts and Dick Codey? Apparently he also claimed that their would be special favors granted to their group by Adler and the NJ Democratic party.

This is the newest allegation coming out of the Adler-Myers congressional campaign.

Adler's endorsements, etc.

When thinking of the latest lame accusations from the Myers camp, I think the words "desperate" and "pathetic" come to mind. Myers, who has lost the support of almost every organization in the 3rd district to Adler, resorts to more negative, non-implicating campaign points related to the Outdoor Alliance, another organization that has endorsed Adler.

Strangely, these lame accusations come the day after Myers was rejected by his home county paper, The Burlington County Times, whose editorial board saw fit to endorse Adler because of his emphasis on middle-class economic relief. That's five newspaper endorsements for Adler over Myers, which is an impressive tally. The newspaper editorial boards in these endorsements have mentioned two reasons to endorse Adler over Myers, generally speaking: Adler's greater command of the issues, and Myers relentless "negativity" (Press of Atlantic City).

There's a rudderless ship in the 3rd district, and it's called the S.S. Myers.

For endorsements in the 2nd, I know from having read the endorsements that LoBiondo, unfortunately, got the endorsement of the Inquirer and the Courier-Post over Kurkowski. In District 4, Smith got the endorsement of the Inquirer over Zeitz, even though the Inquirer didn't even bother to send Zeitz a questionnaire, much less cover his race.

John Adler for Congress

The Press of Atlantic CityPhiladelphia Inquirer, Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and New York Times are right John Adler will be an excellent congressman for the 3rd district.  The republicans in congress and President Bush have to take responsibility on November 2nd for the 10 trillion dollar national debt, the war that  should not have happened, the blindness to the energy problem, the budget gap. the balance of trade mess, the housing crisis, the stock market crash, the violation of our national moral code on treatment of prisoners of war, and loss of moral, political and economic leadership in the world. The only answer of the republicans - both McCain and Myers has been to attempt smear their opponents by character attacks.  Willy Horten and Swift boat attacks won't work this time! There is important work for John Adler in the new congress.

Ummmm...the election is on November 4, not November 2, although if you are voting for Adler, I would just as well be happy you are going to show up on the wrong day.

Adler is NOT the answer. It boggles the mind that anyone anywhere equates the Mayor of Medford with the policies of the Bush Administration. Bush will not be President during the 111th Congress, he'll be ranching in Crawford TX. Chris Myers is our best shot at an HONEST person filling the shoes for Mr. Saxton. Adler is corrupt and licks Norcross's shoes. We need an independent voice working for us in Washington. Adler does not understand the importance of our megabase, he disdains the military, doesn't care about hunters or fishermen, he is ill-suited to represent the third district.

And if the New York Times thinks those of us who make a home in Ocean County care what their opinion is, their editorial board ought to come down here for a couple of days and see what the real issues are for us. They clearly have no clue about Ocean County or New Jersey. If they did, they would know what a disaster John Adler is in Trenton and would not endorse him to make me a ham sandwich.
