A team of unlikely Republican allies surfaced in Ocean and Burlington counties today as the U.S. Senate campaign of Murray Sabrin merged with the 3rd District Congressional candidacy of Justin Murphy of Burlington, and freeholder candidate Suzanne Penna of Ocean.
"We have been organizing for the better part of two days," said Sabrin campaign spokesman George Ajjan, who would not comment on the specifics of the Sabrin-Murphy-Penna alliance or on slates his candidate is pulling together in other districts.
Penna of Berkeley Township originally intended to run for Congress in the 3rd District Republican Primary. Her candidacy would have created an Ocean County alternative to organizational candidate Freeholder Jack Kelly.
In Burlington, Murphy has presented himself as the alternative to the Burlington County Republican Organization-endorsed Chris Myers of Medford. Now he believes he can compete in Ocean, the district's other large county.
Rather than split the race four ways among themselves and Kelly and Myers, Murphy and Penna agreed to team up in Ocean. Penna, a freeholder candidate who garnered 37% of the vote in a loss last year, this time accepted the lone freeholder slot while Murphy will continue as the alternative Republican congressional candidate.
"We looked at the entire picture and decided there was no way we could be competitive in terms of money," Penna said.
"The issue is can you cross a county line," said Murphy, a former Tabernacle committeeman. "Myers and Kelly cancel each other out in Burlington and Ocean. I am the only congressional candidate who can be competitive in both counties."
Today, Sabrin joined the emerging slate.
"The only way to make this state better is to get rid of the bosses," said Penna. "Now we have a greater chance with this being a three-way race."
As things stand in Ocean right now, Kelly would appear on the line with Senate candidate Andy Unanue. Burlington is in a holding position with regard to the senate race.
Kelly referred to an article in today's Press of Atlantic City as he downplayed the potential impact of a Murphy-Penna alliance. In the piece, Murphy refuses to disclose how much money he has raised to date, as Myers reveals he has $334,000 raised and $288,000 on hand, and Kelly says he has $306,000 raised and $281,000 on hand.
"If I am correct, Murphy is well known in Burlington," said Kelly. "He's not well known in Ocean. He will have a hard time getting his message out if he doesn't have much money. He's up against a tough challenge."
Chris Russell, a spokesman for the Myers campaign, said the teaming of Penna and Murphy amounts to a wash in terms of impact on Myers’s candidacy.
"If he hooks up with Penna, that’s good for Murphy," said Russell. "She made a credible run for freeholder. We’re not at all concerned about it."
Russell believes the votes Penna picks up in her native Toms River and elsewhere will drain Kelly in Ocean almost as uniformly as Murphy will leech into Myers’s GOP support in Burlington.

This shows Murray is doing
This shows Murray is doing the right thing in hooking up with credible people who want to rebuild the GOP on a traditional, mainstream platform. Under George Gilmore, Ocean County has seen tax increases the Payne, Ferriero and Spicuzzo machines in North Jersey would not dream of. It's time for a REAL change, (not just Obama's syrupy rhetoric), and a serious slate of traditional Republicans offer that!
Absolutely agree
Sabrin is doing the right thing by allying with credible candidates who are seeking to retake the party.
Murray Sabrin and George Ajjan are running a great campaign
All I can say is keep going - don't stop until Victory Day in June and Victory Day in November!
This is going to be FUN beating all these party hacks who don't care about the Republican Party - only maintaining their little island!
It's OUR PARTY TOO!
Amen
Murray is the only one running a statewide campaign. No one in Sewell or Edgewater is going to relate to the effete Zimmer or Kooky Joe.
I still need to hear Murray
I still need to hear Murray promise that he's going to serve a full term before I can vote for him.
Boy it really sounds like Murray hooked up with a couple
of winners there! I bet no one (except their immediate families) in Burlington or Ocean County ever heard of these 2 candidates. Boy that means that Murray gets about 50 more votes in Burlington and Ocean Counties-Now he's sure to win!
Well, someone certainly must
Well, someone certainly must have heard and have been concerned enough to waste time with computer hacking! There was enough going on for homeland security to get involved.

IF you consider 37% of the vote
in BOSS controlled Ocean County just a flash in the pan, then maybe, I would share your sentiments about the candidates, including myself, being no-names, BUT, YOU try getting 37% of the vote with about a 10th of the money used by the machine and then come back and talk to me.
If the Republican Party wants to be the Party of Reform, then let's start acting like we REALLY have the best interests of the constituents at hand! Let's get rid of the corrupt boss system, let's end double dipping within our own ranks, and that includes at the county level, and THEN we can start pointing fingers at the Democrats. Until then, the "powers that be" in the Republican party are nothing more than wanna bes and pawns. I stand as a woman that desires to be a PUBLIC servant, a stateswoman, not a politician! We can no longer afford to sit back and moan and whine about our situation! We have to make the change!
LOL
This will not make a bit of difference in the 3rd District primary. Murphy is delussional if he thinks he has a legitimate shot. His failure to report fundraising numbers confirms he is spinning his tires. His one term as a councilman is not a political resume despite what someone on here might believe. And he is not a combat tested veteran, like say Duncan Hunter, although someone on here might try to fool people into believing. And Murray is the only candidate running who has bolted two parties because he couldn't stand the heat in the kitchen - or because he got his rear end handed to him - you choose. When will he leave the Republican party again? Anyone want to start a pool? I pick June 11.
Reporting is not until April
Reporting is not until April 20th.
Wrong
You are wrong. The FEC report is quarterly - it was due March 31. Nice try.
Apologize
I apologize - the quarterly report is officially not due until the 15th of April however the funds cannot be counted past March 31. So if Justin were to receive a check today, he would have The monthly is the 20th.
cut off
He would have to count it toward the next filing period.
I'm sure he'll keep that in
I'm sure he'll keep that in mind.
