LONG BRANCH - U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg today accused Democratic primary opponent U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-1) of flip-flopping on the Iraq War.
Andrews helped craft the 2002 House resolution authorizing President George W. Bush to go to war in Iraq. He later voted 16 times for troop withdrawal, and Lautenberg suggests he did so because the war became unpopular.
"You can't have it both ways," Lautenberg said at Seven President's Park.
In answer to Lautenberg's attack on his war vote, Andrews pointed out this week that Lautenberg made public statements in 2002 in support of the resolution when he was out of the U.S. Senate.
Lautenberg said he might have voted against the resolution if he had access to government intel.
Asked today if he would consider endorsing Barack Obama for president as a way of putting an exclamation point on his opposition to the war, Lautenberg vowed to stay neutral inspite of Sen. Hillary Clinton's "aye" vote on Iraq and Andrews's backing of Clinton.
"The people of New Jersey - Democrats - chose Hillary Clinton (in the Feb 5th primary)," the senator said. "You have to pay some attention to that."

I remember when he was running against Forrester in 2002 he said that he would have voted for the resolution. I wish he would be a little bit more consistent. Like me, for example. I don't own anything about Procede, I just know that it works for thickening hair!

This comment is a disaster for Frankie. Well versed lines should be easy to repeat in public. However, Frankie losses his sentences and sounds a bit confused about what he is talking about. Not a good sign for our elder statesman before those debates.
Votes Speak Louder Than Words
just something to think about while Congressman Andrews flip flops on the issue.
lautenberg on Iraq
Lautenberg's change of heart is problematic for two reasons:
First of all, Lautenberg was a war supporter in the beginning as well, before he saw the light.
and secondly -- most inportantly -- Frank Lautenberg was not even in the Senate at the time of the vote. Rather, he was cheering from the sidelines from the retirement that cost him ALL of his seniority in the Senate.
Lassiter is ridiculous -- Andrews was Bush's boy
Lautenberg was a hero for jumping in and saving the seat from Forrester. Then he was a hero for calling out Bush in 2003, while Andrews was reading Cheney talking points.
