Kelly goes after Myers on campaign mailer

In their 3rd Congressional District GOP primary scrap, Jack Kelly this week pounced on Chris Myers’s claim to having cut wasteful spending and reduced the number of employees in Medford Township.

Seizing on Medford Mayor Myers’s recently released campaign mailer, Kelly, an Ocean County freeholder, said, "the truth is that from 2001-2007 Medford Township budgets show a 45% increase in appropriations – up from $14.6 million to $21.2 million."

Kelly concluded that Myers "is somebody who plays fast and loose with the truth."

The Myers campaign defended the mailer, calling Kelly’s accusation that Myers didn’t cut wasteful spending unfounded.

"Under his leadership, Medford Township privatized the processing of leaves and brush (laying off a few DPW employees) and due to that saves approximately $380,000 per year for the next three years, according to the terms of the contract," said Myers spokesman Chris Russell. "That's over $1.1 million in ‘wasteful spending’ that was cut. Furthermore, the collection of leaves was privatized at a savings of $50,000 per year for three years. That's another $150,000 in ‘wasteful spending’ cut."

Frank Luna, a spokesman for the Kelly campaign, called Russell’s details bogus semantics.

"The fact is the township budget has gone up," said Luna. "What’s ‘cutting wasteful spending’ when you can’t stabilize the budget?"

Russell said every municipality struggles with unfunded mandates, and "as Trenton is dumping on them, Chris has found ways to save taxpayer dollars."

Luna said property taxes in Ocean County are the sixth lowest in the state.

The Kelly spokesman also amplified his candidate’s other claim that Myers stretched the truth by saying he reduced the workforce in Medford. From 2001-2007 Medford Township staff grew 15%, from 112 employees to 129 employees, Kelly said.

"The numbers we have are from the budget itself," said Luna.

Russell fought back with a statement, in which he revealed that Medford, pop. 23,399, actually has more employees than Kelly thought.

"According to official Medford Township Payroll Logs, Medford Township had 159 employees (full and part time) in 2001, when Chris Myers took office. In 2007, they had 151 employees.

"In 2008, that number will likely drop again to roughly 147 employees," Russell added. "Keep in my mind, people come on and off payroll throughout the year...so the numbers above may shift by 1 or 2 from month to month in any given year, but it doesn't change the fact that our mailer is 100% accurate and our claim that Chris Myers ‘reduced the number of municipal employees’ is undeniably true."

Wait GetaClue

I could say the picture speaks for itself, however, your post isnt very nice either.

I would not guess who is who on these boards because of privacy. You only make yourself look foolish.

But, on point, do you really think Kelly has a shot at beating Myers???

Congrats Chris Myers

You cut 5 jobs last year from Medford Township Government. Want a cookie? You expect to call yourself a fiscal conservative by proudly cutting FIVE jobs, thus leaving five more of your constituents unemployed? Here's a new headline:

CHRIS MYERS TO BLAME FOR RISING UNEMPLOYMENT IN MEDFORD!

On another note, I why the hell can't Chris Myers speak for himself? You'd think that Chris RUSSELL is running for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd.

Debate for Dogcatcher?

While Myers and Kelly are sitting here bickering about the 5 to 10 jobs that Medford did or not cut over the past few years, John Adler is out helping to spur economic growth by investing in middle class tax cuts and getting us out of this disaster in Iraq.

This Myers-Kelly fight seems better suited for a debate for 3rd District Dogcatcher then someone that should be our next Congressman.

The reason Russell Speaks

It's all creative

Layoff's                       $ 380,000

privatized savings        -$ 50,000

Contract amount ??    = $ 330,000

doesn't equal 1.1M & another 150K of wastful spending over the years.

My questions would be:

1. What was the contract amount?

2. How many is a few DPW workers & what other services did they provide?

3. Who got the Kickback for the Contract ( :

WHY WON'T JACK KELLY

talk about himself?  People are making a deal out of Chris Russell speaking about Chris Myers... At least he's talking about his own candidate's record and not continually attacking the opponent.  Jack Kelly's only campaign strategy seems to be to just talk about his opponent... never about his own record or accomplishments.  He'd better observe one of the primary rules of campigning:  define yourself before your opponent does.  If Kelly doesn't talk about his own record soon, he opens himself up to being defined as the weak candidate he truly is.  Name recorgnition will also be a problem; as long as Chris Myers is the only issue, his is the only name that will be in the press.  Who outside of Ocean County even has heard of Jack Kelly?

LOL

Who outside Medford Township has heard of Chris Myers (if they know who he is inside Medford Township)? Is that post for real?

The point is Chris Myers is running for Congress, not Chris Russell and whether its attacking back at Jack Kelly or talking about his own record I WANT TO HERE IT FROM HIM.
