Showdown at the courthouse: Kelly and Myers meet on the pavement

Ocean County Freeholder Jack KellyOcean County Freeholder Jack Kelly

TOMS RIVER: Two Republican Primary candidates in the 3rd Congressional District engaged in a verbal sidewalk scuffle after Medford Mayor Chris Myers took his frustration over opponent Jack Kelly’s public work record into the heart of Kelly’s home county.

It was a shift in strategy for Myers, who has mostly played defense for the past few weeks as Kelly hurled pointed critiques of Myers’s record across county lines. Today, Kelly, an Ocean County freeholder, was the object of his Burlington opponent’s counter-attack.

Trying to strike a contrasting pose to what he has described as Myers’s propensity to shrink behind surrogates, Kelly went to the Ocean County Courthouse to directly take on Myers’s complaints.

Myers had plenty of them.

He noted that Kelly was employed from 1999 through 2004 by the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), where he worked as an airport analyst and airport business manager.

To date, Myers has responded to Kelly’s barbs by reminding Republican voters that he is a combat veteran, and a Lockheed Martin program manager and vice president for the development of missile systems - a record he believes contrasts favorably with Kelly’s 16 years as a freeholder.

Standing on the walkway outside the courthouse, Myers amplified his dismissal of Kelly by exposing what in his view was his opponent’s questionable work record at the SJTA.

Both of Kelly’s positions at the authority were created on the day Kelly took them and neither was publicly advertised. Myers also charged that Kelly wasn’t qualified for the job, though he made a salary of $74,662 when he left. Moreover, Kelly accepted waive-out payments of nearly $34,000 for turning down healthcare, while already accepting full-time health benefits as a member of the freeholder board.

"In a time where American families are struggling to buy food and gas, and pay for adequate health insurance, it’s unconscionable that Jack Kelly would be enriching himself on the backs of New Jersey taxpayers with multiple public paychecks," said Myers. "This is exactly the type of inappropriate, self-serving, unethical behavior that voters are rightly sick and tired of having to pay for, and which they will surely reject in this election."

Reporters who were gathered around Myers then shifted and encircled Kelly as he responded to Myers’s charge in the first of numerous exchanges.

"Did I do my job?" said Kelly. "I went to work every morning at 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., an eight-hour a day job, five days a week."

He said he was proud of the work he did at the SJTA.

"You have the right to earn a living," said Kelly. "For the last three decades I held elected office but I also raised a family of five children. I never took a penny from nothing. When this man says I never did nothing in South Jersey, I take exception to that."

He urged reporters to talk to his immediate supervisor about what he said was his superior work performance while at the SJTA, then he hit back at Myers, charging the Lockheed Martin executive with himself making money off of the taxpayers.

"I’ll switch salaries with Chris Myers," said Kelly. "He can take my $30,000 a year and I’ll take his salary."

Myers objected to Kelly likening his elected experience and public jobs to what Myers does at Lockheed. The defense systems manufacturer is a publicly traded company, which pays billions in taxes. For the record, Myers noted, he earns $250,000 annually plus bonuses depending on the year.

Sharpening his attack on Kelly, Myers remarked that his private sector experience is more valuable than Kelly’s public record as a six-time elected official, and that created an opening for Kelly.

"I attend my meetings," he boasted, in contrast to Myers, he said, "an elected official who has missed 25% of his meetings over the last two years. In 2004, for his budget, he didn’t show up at the public hearing, even though it raised taxes."

"I don’t know if that’s true, we’ll check," Myers said. "As a traveling businessman, I made the meetings I needed to make. I made sure I was there for key votes."

He objected when Kelly called him a registered lobbyist, pointing out that he isn’t registered, never has been. Then he clarified how he helps those who do work in that capacity at Lockheed.

"Our lobbyists in Washington would ask me how missile systems work or get me to go down and brief somebody," Myers said.

NO SHOW MYERS FINALLY SHOWS UP?!?!?

Congrats South Jersey! This is the first time in weeks we've actually heard from Chris MYERS and not Chris RUSSELL! Joe Schmo voter now knows who is running for Congress. Mind you he's still a member of the corrupt Burlington County Republican organization. I think the article earlier today on this site tells you which crooks are funding his campaign!

But hey it looks like Chris Myers has a history of being a no show! The mans got a record of missing 25% percent of the meetings as Mayor/Councilman! And a note to Myers, if were talking about taking taxpayers dollars, PLEASE RETURN THE MONEY THE MEDFORD GOVERNMENT PAID YOU FOR THE 25% OF MISSED MEETINGS! Is Chris Myers delusional? The man makes 250K + bonuses (of which I'm sure he doesn't pay taxes on) a year compared to Kelly's 30K, and he tells Kelly hes out of touch with the everyday voter.

With every waking day the Myers campaign just gets more and more comical and sad. Can't wait to see the garbage they come up with come June 3rd!

Are You Sure

you are not a Kelly plant? You sure sound like one.

I would be nervous too. Kelly knows he will lose and so does Adler.

05/01/08 11:06 pm

Clarification

Just so there is no confustion, Jack Kelly knows that Kelly will lose, and Adler knows that Adler will lose to Myers.

05/01/08 11:07 pm

HAHA

LOL, yeah I'm a Kelly plant, righttttttttt. I'm a person who cares about South Jersey and thinks that the state of the Myers campaign is laughable at best. As for Kelly, obviously not the brightest tool in the shed either, because as you know he "never took a penny from nothing."

You sound very much like you're in Chris Myers corner here. Are you a Myers plant? Are you Garfield DeMarco? Did you give $2,300 dollars to Myers for Congress at the order of Boss Paulsen?

05/01/08 11:18 pm

Myers is pathetic

Chris Myers, who makes $250,000 or more off the federal tax dollar, has the nerve to question someone making $30k per year, while serving the public. If you want to get technical Myers is a double dipper, taking tax dollars from Lockheed and from Medford.

and if you think about it Myers could be considered a thief, he stole 25% of his Medford salary while not showing up for work.
He missed budget votes to be in DC lobbying officials and making donations to Lautenberg.

Medford spending increased 45% under Myers and he has one of the highest tax rates in Burlington County. Where did the Burlington GOP find this loser hack??

This Myers guy is far from a Conservative and all Republicans should say NO to him and his corrupt team of Paulsen and DeMarco on June 3.

Patronage Jobs

So Jack Kelly never ever held a patronage job off the taxpayers?

Thats a first!

Too bad I am an independent and cannot vote in the primary, but I have been working to make sure Myers wins; Kelly is truly an embarrsment and will not win Burlington or Camden.

I guess we will hear the crying after June 2nd when Kelly loses

3rd CD race

I do not live in the third district, and i am not a plant for either candidate. I am just a concerned republican. Now that i have said that, we need to support Chris Myers for the nomination. Myers has the resources to hold onto the seat, the backing of the current congressman, and a strong understanding of business and the economy (which is desperately needed). If the democrats didnt target this seat id say Kelly would be ok (the district leans R), but Kelly loses to Adler without $$$ (especially with Obama on the ticket). We need MONEY and Message, not some political hack who couldnt win a competitive election if his life depended on it.

05/02/08 12:57 am

To John Adler

I hope your enjoying the popcorn and the show..

By the way any Adler supporter really can't talk about corrupt county organizations...give me a break.

I'd say this primary's getting too ugly, and it probably is, but I guess that's the nature of some primary campaigns...I just hope Myers and Kelly remember who the real target should be.

Why do we all feel the need to vote for a person

because of they are better than the Democrat? Why do we allow ourselves to keep voting for a bad choice, just BECAUSE?

Neither of these candidates is good for the public. NEITHER ONE! There is a third choice! If you all would get your acts in gear and actually back the BEST choice, there could be real change.

Both Kelly and Meyers have added to the dismal economy in their respective positions. NEITHER one has benefitted their constituents because THEY owe their positions to their political bosses!

How about DEEPWATER? Lockheed Martin has taken MILLIONS of federal dollars to create 8 totally unseaworthy vessels for the Coast Guard. They have taken MILLIONS of dollars for anti-terrorist "improvements" on Coast Guard vessels and still theses vessels are left vulnerable. Do you really want this man (Myers) in charge of steering more MILLIONS down a "rat hole"? That is WASTED money.

And Myers sure did hit the nail on the head with Kelly. CREATED positions! Taking money from one public sector job's health benefits, while receiving public health benefits from the other elected position. Using the people's money to benefit himself over and over again.

If you all are happy continually voting in people that have records to prove they are not in it for the people, then you have no reason to bellyache when your taxes keep going up, and you can't afford to live in New Jersey anymore.

How bout you all get a brain and start thinking for yourselves, and NOT the group mentality!

Justin Murphy, the ONLY real people's choice!

05/02/08 6:52 am

Here we go again

Here we go again with ridiculous accusations. REFORMcandidate - Do you know Chris Myers was involved in any way with Deepwater? Please provide proof of your accusations. There are over 140,000 people worldwide who work for Lockheed, yet you and the brainless others who hate the largest employer in the District continue to think that every employee knows what is going on in every facet of the company. Moreover, do you honestly think if hell froze over, Christ appeared in human form, the Cubs won the World Series, and Justin Murphy won the election that he would not attempt to assist Lockheed in securing federal dollars? If think he wouldn't then you are delusional. Now as for Jack Kelly claiming Chris Myers is a registered lobbyist - that is a bold faced LIE! There is another Chris Myers who worked for Lockheed who was a registered lobbyist and is now employed by Caterpillar, Inc. in Washington DC. This has been discussed, debated, and debunked. Stop lying to make yourself look good (if that possible) Jack!

I never took a penny for nothing

Well, except for the $34,000 cash for not taking health care coverage at the SJTA.

Pig at the trough. Kelly makes Wayne Bryant look like an amateur.

“A reporter asked Kelly what voters will think, especially if they're struggling to pay their own health insurance. "I think they'll say, "You worked hard; you earned a living. You have a right to earn a living,' " Kelly said.”

Really Jack? Do you think the taxpayers that have footed your hefty salary and pension/health benefits as a Freeholder and then in ALL the other government jobs will appreciate that you essentially stole $34K in taxpayer dollars to not take public health care even though you really do in your other government job?

You think they will be “ok” with that knowing that they are not sure how they can continue to live in NJ with all the expenses that fat cat politicians like you continue to cause?

And, by the way, why is your salary as an OC Freeholder $30K when it is only $20K next door in Burlington County?

Pig at the trough…

05/02/08 9:35 am

need clarification from GOPForAll....

explain to me how Myers' private sector job is taxpayer-funded?

not be facetious, just don't know how that is possible.

please clarify....thanks

05/02/08 11:30 am

This is unnecessary

Chris Myers is so qualified to be a Congressman (the Navy record particularly) that there is no need to even mention his opponents. Attacking Kelly just gives him free publicity, when the Myers biography alone is enough to win.

05/02/08 1:32 pm

Well Said

Kelly knows he does not have a chance, and Adler has no idea what he has in store for him when the debates happen.

Assuming Johnny doesnt run away.

05/02/08 1:58 pm

Conspiracy?

Going over the recent postings and watching the above video in its entirety (13 minutes I will never get back), I have to wonder if there is a Kelly-Norcross connection?

Too many coincidences happened yesterday.

Started with the press announcement that Myers was going to nail Kelly for his patronage job at the SJ Airport and his taking money for not taking health benefits.

Right before the press conference, Norcross puppet Perr issues a statement asking Myers to give back money from Paulsen.

Then Kelly shows up at the press event that Myers was holding to further provide a distraction and coincidentally the question that Perr posed was asked of Myers at the event.

Seems to me that Norcross, Perr and Kelly all have a similar goal - get rid of Chris Myers. Do you think that Kelly is so desperate he would be coordinating with Camden just to get through the Primary?

Seems like a stretch - but is it? "The enemy of my enemy if my friend."

Let's keep an eye out for more "coincidences."

Myers

No wonder Chris Myers believes the economy is "basically strong." The mans making $250K a year plus bonuses. Come back to reality Chris, middle class America doesn't make big corporate bucks like you do. You say that the economy is "basically strong", I say you're "basically out of touch" with the 3rd district.

Asbury Park Press Editorial

Bye Bye Mr. Piggy at the Trough - And Good Riddance

Kelly feeding at the trough MAY 4, 2008

If the campaign of Republican 3rd Congressional District candidate John Kelly isn't toast yet, it should be.

At a bizarre press conference held by his GOP primary challenger, Chris Myers, on the Ocean County Courthouse steps Thursday, Myers painted an unflattering but accurate portrait of Kelly, a six-term freeholder and former mayor of Eagleswood, as a consummate trough-swiller.

Citing public documents, Myers talked about how Kelly took two patronage jobs for which he wasn't qualified with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, where he worked from 1999 to 2004. Both of the jobs — airport analyst and business manager — were apparently created the day he got them and neither was publicly advertised.

Myers also said Kelly has collected $71,000 in health insurance payments from the authority for opting out of its health care plan, payments Kelly continues to collect — and continues to defend. "I was treated the same as every other employee," he said. "These rules were not created for Jack Kelly." That should soothe voters.

Kelly, who has been a freeholder since 1993 and served on the Eagleswood Township Committee for 17 years, was hired by the SJTA, an agency with a well-deserved reputation as a patronage pit, in 1999 as an "airport analyst" at Atlantic City Airport at a salary of $57,304. That transformed him from a double-dipper into a triple-dipper. He held his freeholder, committeeman and authority jobs simultaneously. He gave up his committee seat in 2001.

The airport analyst job required a bachelor's degree from an accredited college and five years' experience in the aviation field. Kelly admits he had neither. He has a high school diploma and a real estate license. The business manager post, a job for which Kelly was paid $74,662 when he retired in 2004, also required a college degree.

His jobs at the airport, doubtless arranged by his mentor, Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore, who served as general counsel to the SJTA when Kelly was first hired there, were classic pension-boosters. State pensions are based on the three highest years of a retiree's salary. Prior to his time with the SJTA, Kelly had never received more than his salary as freeholder — $30,000 today — for any government job. Today, his pension exceeds $40,000.

Kelly, who was present at the news conference, let Myers complete his presentation before responding indignantly. "I have held elective office, but I also raised a family of five children," Kelly said. "I raised my family and I'm proud of it. I've done that. I've worked hard. I never took a penny for nothing."

No? Pension-padding doesn't count? Getting paid thousands of dollars for not enrolling in a health plan you don't need doesn't count? Taking jobs you got only because of who you knew doesn't count?

Let's see what the voters think.

Just gets better

It just gets better. Thanks for the laugh Jack. Your latest press release calls into question whether Myers was reimbursed for contributions he gave to Republican candidates. A few things - are you insinuating that the largest private employer in the District is committing a crime? Because it is illegal to reimburse an employee for giving a campaign contribution. Better have your facts straight. And did you get reimbursed for your contributions to federal candidates? Oh wait! That is right. According to the FEC, you have NEVER given to a Republican candidate for federal office. NEVER! You had all that money from the job you weren't qualified for, the health care you opted out of and the promotions you didn't deserve. Don't you think you could have put a pen to a check and sent it to at least Chris Smith for his re-election efforts? Then you would look like such a hypocrite. By the way, love the fact that it took you less than a month to go back on your promise to wage a clean, positive campaign. If hypocrisy were bliss, you'd be the happiest person in the OC.
