Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced that he has accepted terms for a second debate with his two Democratic primary challengers, this time on New Jersey 101.5.
The debate will take place in the station's Mercer County studios from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, and is the first of two debates reaching a statewide audience that Sen. Lautenberg will attend. The second debate is a television face-off on NJN, scheduled for 8 p.m. on May 30.
According to the senator's campaign, the radio debate will allow the candidates to take questions from callers from around the state.
In his Democratic Primary re-election bid, Lautenberg is facing U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-1) and Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello.
Andrews has repeatedly called on Lautenberg to debate seven times before the June 3 election. Today, reaction out of the challenger’s campaign was mixed regarding Lautenberg’s agreement to two debates.
"First Sen. Lautenberg was hiding from debates, now he’s hiding the debates," said Andrews spokesman Michael Murphy, who gave the opposing campaign credit for being, in Murphy's words "shrewd" for scheduling the television debate on a Friday summer night.
"We would have much preferred network TV debates in a different time slot, and a lot longer - Lincoln-Douglas style. But we’re of course delighted to debate anywhere, anytime," Murphy said.
Cresitello was also disappointed by the scheduling of the Friday television debate and by the fact that the candidates would be participating in just one television debate.
"I'm not happy about a Friday night debate at the end of May," said Cresitello. "If we had two network television debates I would have been able to show the people of New Jersey that I have solutions to problems."

In this one, he'll be reading verbatim from notes the entire time. How about just one more now, old timer, this time a debate that's actually in front live people? You can do it!
Wednesday, May 28th, shall we say?
An improvement
At least this debate is on a media people actually listen to and at a time they might be listening. Now if he will actually take questions from listeners it might give us the voters a chance to hear if FL has anything substantive to say.
Wait
I would rather have them debate here where the entire state can hear their ideas rather than make a case based on how they look. Like the NJN debate quadruple the amount of people will be able to watch or listen. Looks like ROb's got nothing to gripe about now. Rob wanted a superficial race and he got dumped into a policy battle-not something that he wanted to do-maybe thats because A) George cant tell him exactly what to say or B) His attendance record in Congress has been so terrible for the last 20 years that he hasnt really gained much expirience in public policy. I know Rob has plenty of policy expirience when it comes to helping out George Bush. "Rob Andrews (will be bossed by George Norcross just as bad in the Senate as he is the House) for NJ 2008"
SJBLUE Let me spell it out for you "Experience"
Listen SJBLUE let me spell it out for you. The only reason you are going to H E A R a debate on 101.5 is because of Rob Andrews. Thanks to Rob we are going to actually
T A L K about some of the problems the voters are concerned with. Do not, Do not come on this site to spout irrelevant nonsense that has no business in this election. We have to much at stake!
ROB ANDREWS FOR U.S. SENATE!
Irrelevant
1) It is not irrelevant that Rob said he was supporting FL's campiagn face to face 2) It is not irrelevant that Rob has been a Congressman at the grace of George Norcross 3) it is not irrelevant that Rob admitted that voting in the House wasnt critical 4) It is not irrelevant that Rob has been in Congress for 20 years and has only gotten 7 bills out of Committee 5) One of the bills he helped to usher was the Iraq ware resolution 6) He wanted debates and he got them-debates are about ideas and if he cant sell his ideas on radio than Frank deserves to win 7)That Rob's late entry plus his disdain for Washington and his desire to run for Governor is pushing this campaign. And that his wife is simply keeping a place warm for him or some other Norcross lacky Don't tell me what is irrelevant-Rob opened this door and now he can't close it. He went all in with a pair of twos. Rob is a poor excuse for a Congressman and thank God he wont be our next Senator. Furthermore, if I am voting for expirience I would vote for the candidate that has a record of getting things done-a progressive voting record. Frank has delievered for NJ-Rob has only only only ever delievered for his boss-George Norcross
Why Won't Andrews Answer These Simple Questions...
...concerning the unethical genesis of/rationale for his candidacy?
Congressman Andrews...
1) Do you disagree, in any way, with what all your colleagues in the New Jersey congressional delegation have told us about the dinner meeting you took part in, at which you all agreed and gave your word to refrain from a primary challenge?
2) After the meeting did you feel obligated to honor your word as given?
3) At what point in time (assuming that your answer to the last question was "yes".) did you start to have questions about honoring your word?
4) What were those questions and what brought them on?
5) At, precisely, what point in time did you decide to run against Lautenberg?
6) Was this a decision you came to on your own?
7) Or were the views of other people solicited?
8) Did other people contact you to "recruit you" to run?
9) If your decision was made in conjunction with other people, what were the understandings/conditions that were reached between you and them?
10) Specifically, what was the content of your discussions with Norcross and Adubato?
11) Why did they support your run?
12) Were any specific quid pro quo's discussed?
13) Or was it just implicitly understood that it would be good for them in the future if you were to become a Senator?
14) It was widely reported that Joe Ferriero was supporting your candidacy, but then backed off when it seemed it might cost him more in the short run than he might gain by staying loyal to you; are these reports true?
15) Was Ferriero backing you?
16) If yes, then why?
17) What was in it for Joe?
18) Was it a matter of high principle that Ferriero was supporting you?
19) Or a matter of political opportunism?
20) If the former; how do you feel about Ferriero now that he's officially abandoned you?
21) Your campaign is thoroughly laced with implications that Frank Lautenberg is somehow too old to competently do his job; did you have any factual proof/knowledge of this before you announced?
22) If yes, when did you get it and why didn't you share it immediately with the public?
23) How do you justify making your announcement and filing at the last minute thereby precluding any response from your potential rivals who would have also run if they had known the agreement was "busted"?
24) You've claimed that the reason you violated your word and broke the agreement was because Lautenberg, somehow, was't holding up his end....you made vague statements about how he wasn't being sufficiently vigorous in his campaigning; but, prior to your primary challenge on April 2nd there was no active campaign (the Republicans were/are in virtually total disarray)....so how do you justify your failure to inform Lautenberg and the rest of your colleagues of your alleged concerns prior to dropping the bomb of your announcement?
Until you answer these questions in great and specific detail; your campaign has zero credibility.
PS In the event that Congressman Andrews fails to answer all these questions it is my hope that the NJ press corps actually does its job and presses for detailed responses.
