Myers jabs at Adler over Democratic Party's state budget

Medford Mayor Chris MyersMedford Mayor Chris Myers

TRENTON - The general election race to succeed U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton (R-3) has opened up in earnest now, with GOP Medford Mayor Chris Myers charging his Democratic opponent, state Sen. John Adler (D-Camden) with being part of the Trenton spending beast, and Adler arguing that Myers has been hapless at the local level.

In the face of a letter from Myers urging him to vote "no" on the state budget this evening, Adler defended the $32.9 billion document, and seized the opportunity to criticize Myers for what he sees as the Medford mayor’s failure to harness local spending.

Myers's first blood letter, mailed to the state senator last week in advance of the full Senate’s consideration of the budget, specifically targeted the budget’s spending cuts for small-sized towns.

"John Adler and the Trenton politicians have created a mess of this state’s finances over the last decade," said Myers, a vice-President at Lockheed Martin. "Now, instead of cutting real waste in state government, they are scapegoating small towns—many in the 3rd Congressional District. It’s wrong and, frankly, it’s unacceptable."

Adler issued a retaliatory statement through his campaign manager, Raiyan Syed.

"This years state budget will slash $600 million in state spending, one of the largest single budget cuts in state history," said Syed.

"On the other hand," Syed added, "Mayor Myers' has a history of raising taxes and spending. Mayor Myers has voted to hike the Medford tax levy by more than 60% since 2002 and increased spending by more than 50%."

Myers’ argument is that part of the problem is bloated big city aid and patronage jobs, which he claims Adler has not opposed more aggressively during his Trenton tenure.

Comments

Chris Myers never saw a tax hike he didn't like...

Of course Chris Myers opposes passage of the state budget, after all why would he want to cut the state spending budget? Must be driving him nuts that there was a $600 million cut to the state budget.

Over in Medford, he has continually has raised taxes. After all, his political mentor George W. Bush has created the biggest budget deficit in our country's history, why should Myers be any different?

I think Americans have had enough of these stupid political gimmicks Mr. Mayor, show us a little respect.

Myers' problems

Ignoring that Myers is nearly broke while Adler has over a $1 million in the bank for this election, one wonders about the efficacy of Myers' campaign strategies -- calling out Adler for supporting budget cuts in a time of fiscal crises, and so on. I say this because Myers isn't putting out policy positions on his own, nor does he even have an Issues section on his web site. Only reacting to issues and attacking Adler for helping restore the state to financial solvency is not a wise campaign strategy. But in this anti-Republican, anti-Bush year, Myers is doing his best to deflect attention from his own brand of social conservatism and his own stance ont he Iraq War (no timeline, no withdrawal, no benchmarks), which is squarely at odds with the majority in his district and the state.

Martin;s Problem

Martin:

If you have any STONES then you will use your all so important sense of pontification to answer the following questions about Adler:

1. When was the LAST TIME Adler did NOT RAISE taxes?

2. Why has Adler blown off working with the Vets/Military groups and helping them? OH yes, we have information to back up that he has done JACK!

3. Why has Adler refused to work with and GOP on any level to ensure a better way of life for the voters?

4. How come with ALL the Millions of dollars that Democrats brag they have and use have any Democrat - especially a Camden County Dem LOST in Burlington? (Hint: Think the 8th District Candidates of Riley, Bodine and Fifis who were pumped tens of thousands of dollar and got routed last November)

5. How man JOBS has Adler secured in his position as Senator or his employment?

6. What kind of Military experience does Adler have to prove he understands Military and Defense?

Martin, I know you will not answer any of these questions and we know you will probably make up some kind of stuff to try to answer; but Adler is a punk. Period.

LOL

Seriously pablos are a Chris Myers plant? Every article about this race you seem to have inside information, yet refuse to ever share anything. How do you know who Adler has or hasn't been working with? Just admit you work for Myers and get it over with.

So you're saying that if you don't serve in the military there's no way you can understand military and defense? Joe Biden never served in the military, do you think he doesn't understand? You're litmus test for understanding issues is ridiculous.

Chris Myers, has ran a joke campaign at best. This tax cutting mayor is no more then a tax and spend mayor. Open your eyes and look at your checkbook, taxes in Medford have gone up since he was elected. He opposes the state budget that cuts over $600 million dollars in spending!

According to the BCT another 160 people lost jobs today in NJ-3 and Chris Myers believes that the economy is "basically strong." I think its Chris Myers who doesn't understand the economy!

Really?

No, I am not a shill for anyone, but obvioulsy you Citizen are the one lacking credibility AND information.

Thanks to Myers work through Lockheed, he has worked to develop and implement jobs and employment for people! As someone who has really good friends who work at Lockheed, they are all behind Myers and so are their families.

It is a basic simple google fact Citizen if you read up on what Adler has NOT done you will see his lack of support and know how about military and defense

Oh and what branch of military have YOU served? At least Myers had the guts to serve our Country and like every other vet put his life on the line to do so. Not Adler, he was too busy not dealing with it.

Maybe you should ask people of Cherry Hill how many times AND how much their taxes have gone up.

But I am afraid Citizen that you turn a deaf ear to anything that is said to you.

06/24/08 2:29 pm

LOL

Talk about a shill. CSJ look in the mirror. While your at it, take Tinker Bell with you. Both will see the biggest hypocrites on the planet staring right back at them. Although in your fantasy world I am sure your mirror will continue to tell you that you two are the prettiest girls on the block. Adler is anti-military and is supported by anti-military groups. The Council for a Livable World which calls for huge cuts in military spending including jobs at Lockheed Martin has endorsed Adler. Smart move John. Additionally, this crazy group calls for eliminating our missile defense capabilities. Sure - open us up to attack right John? But seeing he is endorsed by the most liberal left wings groups out there, should this surprise us? That won't play in a district where the largest private employer is a defense contractor and the largest employer are two military bases. Why not just close the bases John and get it over with?

06/24/08 3:16 pm

sorry

you're

06/24/08 3:18 pm

Biden?

Biden?

Biden? Pro military? Defense? When? Wher? How? Why? Biden is NOT a supporter of our troops or military. Get real please.

OC, your post hits right on with your biting comments! Ouch! so true!

Adler does not give on damm about our brave men and women out there fighting; as long as Johnny does not have to march he would rather hide behind George and take little jabs.

God Bless Myers for his service and his continued work to ensure this Nation's safety. Adler only has Cherry Hill as his mainstay, but outside of that, he pretty much is toast.

More Cowbell Please !!

06/24/08 7:29 pm

Hyprocrites

It is funny how those few on here feel that Adler is not a puppet and how Adler is the greatest thing to support our district.

Well, unfortunately for them, Adler has the problem and not Myers. Yes, it is probable that Adler will win Cherry Hill, but look for Myers to take a chunk regardless of what the other characters say.

We know Adler will not win in Ocean County because Ocean is Saxton County and no way will those loyal to Saxton break to vote for a person with a lack of common sense as it purports to the large Vet contingency out there.

Burlco should see a Myers win handidly.

If you all think that Adler is gonna come through and sweep Burlco, you have another thing coming to you. I am telling you voters like Saxton and Smith and will not dump them over any democrat who is a wannabe.

the choice is an easy one

First, to pablo3/gopgal/Lisa and the Cowardly Lion (the oc), Adler is a friend of veterans, as he has cosponsored legislation that would be the state equivalent to the GI Bill currently moving through congress, has veterans on his staff and as top advisors, and has supported bills for veterans throughout his tenure as state senator. Of course, I thank Myers for his service in the military, as I do every veteran. You also asked about Adler working with Republicans; he is very close with Kean Jr. and has worked with him on numerous bills. When you’re the senate judiciary chair, you have to be bipartisan and help build alliances. He has also bucked Corzine when he thought it was warranted (voting against the borrowing to fund property tax rebates last year), even if I disagree with his ultimate decision. Alder has sponsored legislation in the senate that promoted reform and punished public officials convicted of a crime by taking away their pension.

The voters of the third district will decide whom would be the better choice for local district needs; quite obviously, when the Sierra Club and the Recreational Fishing Alliance already endorse, based on his incredibly record on the environment, his green technology initiative, and his work on fishing, recreation and conservation efforts, they know that Adler is the better choice between him and Myers. Adler has his finger on the pulse of the district and has been doing retail politicking for months now.

Regarding the demographics of the district, which seems to be pablo3’s topic of choice, I would remind her that there are 20k more Democrats than Republicans in BurlCo alone, per politickernj, and that district 3 post-Feb. 5 now has more Dems than Republicans overall. Southampton, Pemberton, Evesham, Toms River, South Toms River, Willingboro, Cherry Hill, Riverside, Burlington Township, Barnegat, and more are all Democratic strongholds that will come out for Adler in this increased Dem turnout year. The Republican brand is a scarlet letter, an albatross, thanks to the failed policies of the Bush-Cheney administration, and Myers, who shares many of the same foreign and domestic policy values with those neocon social conservatives, can’t run from that “R” albatross.

On Blue Jersey yesterday, a poster made a good point about jobs in the district and how Myers is disconnected from core economic issues that affect so many New Jerseyans:
http://www.bluejersey.com/showDiary.do;jsessionid=4407BB2E950DD43F8E6A2C...
But, as CitizenSJ pointed out, such is the peril of reality for Myers, who thinks that we’re in a “basically strong economy.”

rating the race: 3 objective observers

There seems to be a consensus amongst political analysts about NJ-3 -- and this was before Myers was broke financially:

Stuart Rothenberg: NJ-03 is “toss up/tilt Democrat”:

http://rothenbergpoliticalreport.blogspot.com/2008/06/2008-house-ratings...

The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza:
“There is no candidate more highly touted in the country than state Assemblyman Senator John Adler (D). And judging from his fundraising totals, the reputation is well deserved. Through mid May, Adler had raised $1.4 million and had a whopping $1.1 million in the bank. Republicans got their preferred candidate when Lockheed Martin executive Chris Myers beat back a more-serious-than-expected primary challenge earlier this month, but the swing nature of the district (Bush won with 51 percent in 2004, Al Gore carried it with 54 percent in 2000) combined with Adler's demonstrated strengths as a candidate will make this a very tough hold for the GOP.”

Evans-Novak political report:

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26834

“New Jersey-3: Medford Township Councilman Chris Myers (R) earned the GOP nomination in the South Jersey district of retiring Rep. Jim Saxton (R). Myers will be the underdog against State Sen. John Adler (D). Leaning Democratic Takeover.”

Oh Tinker Bell

Fly to Never-Neverland and tell Peter and Wendy that you all need to grow up - or at least get a clue. First, Cowardly Lion. Might I remind you yet again my dimm-witted non-friend, that the Cowardly Lion really had courage? Can't you read? Moreover, you were the coward who refuse to meet with me, not the other way around. Is your skirt so tight that it is affecting the blood flow to your brain? And do you lack an ounce of imagination that you can't come up with your own material?

Now thanks for the laugh. Just because Adler got Rich Sexton and some other Dem loyalists who happen to be Vets to make himself look good does not mean he is pro-military or veteran friendly. This is the same guy who sponsored ending the teaching of Veterans and Memorial Days (among others) because the "educators" deemed it as too taxing. Heaven forbid the children of NJ learn and experience what our parents, grandparents, and great parents had to do to overcome evil and spread freedom around the world. I know that runs counter to Alder's beliefs as he is endorsed by an organization who has a deep rooted hatred for the military - Council for a Livable World. The vets here in the 3rd District do not adhere to the beliefs of this organization or Adler for that matter. But I am sure Adler will continue to push for our teachers to instruct students on diversity training - Sally has Two Daddy's is a hell of a lot more important than learning about what the meaning is behind Veterans Day or Memorial Day, huh?

Keep touting that RFA endorsement. As they used to say on the old Batman TV show - KABLEWEY!!!!! A revolt is occurring. And there is another shoe to drop in the near future. What fun!

Lastly, Cillizza is clueless. Enough said. Evan and Novack made the same prediction in 2000 saying that Levin would beat Saxton. How is her Congressional career? You never answer my question on that. As you stated, Rothenberg has called it a toss up/lean Dem - exactly what he said in 2000. He later changed it stating that he couldn't understand why he put in that column and Saxton cleaned Levin's bloated clock. And Chris is far from "bankrupt" having been raising money in NJ and DC. I heard he was down in DC raising money with 30 or so Congressmen. Not bad. The only people bankrupt here are you, Tinker Bell and Johnny Adler - morally bankrupt. Say hi to Capt. Hook and watch out for the hand of his. I would say to guard your grapefruits but we all know they are non-existent.

Bravo OC

Once again OC you have clearly demonstrated your knowledge of actual facts not hysteria like Martin.

it is true if you take time to google and read info that Adler has not been a friend to any of the Vets nor to seniors.

But Martin, why have you not answered any of my questions?

If you want to be taken seriously Martin, you need to bring it; you have ducked every question that has been asked of you regarding Adler and I think that is very sad.

About Voters

Just to clairy for Martin and others;

It was raised last year regarding the statistics on Democratic vs Republican voters in Burlco and surrounding areas.

While there may actually be more registered Democrats in Burlco, why is it then that no democrat has been successful in unseating any of the Freeholders? Diane Allen? Chris Smith? Jim Saxton?

These are all very strong GOP folk who kept getting re-elected time after time.

The answer is a very simple answer; the voters of Burlington vote the person not that party and Martin and others cannot fathom that.

Educated voters vote the person not the party and that is why the better people always win.

06/25/08 9:13 pm

the view from out here

Although I tend to lean toward the more conservative candidates, I have no vested interest in this race so here goes.

Dems may have a voter registration edge in Burlco, but many of those folks voted in the February primary. Some may have switched back (to undeclared or GOP), others didn't bother and may not be as engaged, and some may very well show up in November and vote Democrat. That being said, this race is a toss-up but gun to the head Myers wins.

Although Gore and Kerry won the 3rd, both underperformed relative to the statewide number, reflecting the relative GOP lean of the district.

Saxton faced what many "outside" observers thought was a major challenge by the big Bass, but Saxton won easily. I know this is an open seat race, so that tilts it more favorably to Adler.

Adler has the blessing and/or curse of being a Norcross acolyte. He also was poorly categorized by then candidate Corzine when it was inquired if Adler would be his AG. Adler is also well funded and is running in a good Dem climate.

Myers appears to be consolidating the party together, Gilmore notwithstanding. He also has an experience in defense issues that Adler has no grasp of. He also is probably fortunate that Obama is the candidate. Like it or not, there is no significant minority population in this district (outside of Willingboro) to gin up the Dem vote.

Based on past history, Obama needs to win the state by at least 15 points and the district by 8 points for Adler to have a prayer.

I don't see it happening.
