HAMILTON - At a Democratic National Committee fund-raiser in New York City on Thursday, Michelle Obama asked 4th Congressional District challenger Josh Zeitz if he thinks New Jersey will be a battleground for her husband.
Zeitz told the first lady prospect that New Jersey is safely Democratic territory. Then he added something specific about his own challenge of entrenched U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-4).
"I told Michelle Obama we’re going to work hard, and yes, we’re going to win that race," he said of his longshot bid to upend the veteran Smith and help give Obama a solid majority in Congress.
As they listened to the story, a small crowd clapped in Zeitz’s Hamilton campaign headquarters, which the candidate opened today on South Olden Avenue, a few blocks from the congressman’s house.
"We must win Hamilton," said Zeitz, a Trenton-born history professor and author.
"They say Chris Smith can’t be beaten in his own backyard - that last statement is of course, disputable - but we’re going to prove them wrong," he said.
The laughter-prompting dig referred to news reports that Smith doesn’t spend much time in the congressional district, which sprawls across portions of four counties - Ocean, Monmouth, Mercer and Burlington.
Smith’s hometown of Hamilton is the municipality with the largest number of registered voters at 50,150: 17,658 Democrats and 9,849 Republicans, with fierce independents numbering 22,643. Brick Township’s the second biggest nest of votes in the 4th with 42,582, or 11,163 Republicans, 9,745 Democrats and 21,674 independents.
A progressive Democrat, Zeitz told the crowd packed into the former postal office space that his campaign would open another headquarters in Brick and a third in his hometown of Bordentown.
"This seat is on the map now, and two ingredients are required: money and shoe leather," added Zeitz, urging people to volunteer to do door-to-door and other campaign-related tasks while he keeps making the fund-raising phone calls.
In the crowd stood Mercer County Democratic Chairman Richard McClellan, who earlier in the morning was among 90 people who attended an Obama field organizing event in Ewing. The smiling McClellan admitted he’s enjoying the buildup to what he believes will be a Democratic year. He says he’s particularly excited about this race.
"Last year, we had 50,000 registered Democrats in Mercer," McClellan said. "Now we have almost 80,000 in Mercer County You figure half of them are in Josh’s district. The governor’s talking him up, talking about getting money into this race, and we’re excited about it."
John Cimino, a Democratic candidate for freeholder, agreed that Zeitz is bound to get a bump from Obamaland.
"This is the first time that I can remember this kind of excitement for change, and I’ve got to feel it’s going to sweep in here," Cimino said.
In attendance at the opener was Frank Hanson, a recent Steinert High School grad and student organizer for Obama, who has been building Hamilton-based support for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee since well before the Democratic Primary in New Jersey. Zeitz said he also wants to coordinate with Trenton-based Obama organizers; and in Ocean, his campaign is already hooked into the grassroots organizing of Ocean County Freeholder candidate Stacy Lubrecht, an Obama backer.
Presidential politics notwithstanding, the good feeling for Zeitz in the face of the tough and some say overwhelming task of taking down Smith, comes largely from the work the candidate has done himself over the last ten months, according to his supporters.
Freeholder Dan Benson, a former Hamilton Township party chair, said, "Josh has had three milestones in this campaign I haven’t seen a (Democratic) candidate hit in a long time. First, he got the mainstream press to publicize the fact that Chris Smith spends no time in this district. Second, Josh has been able to bring large numbers of volunteers to make his presence felt. And third, he’s raised money."
The Zeitz Campaign says to date that they have raised well over $200,000 to take on Smith.
At the Thursday night Democratic National Committee fund-raiser, Chairman Howard Dean called Zeitz’s bid against Smith a "winnable and imperative race."

Same Story, Different Year
Chris Smith is very well liked and is a great Congressman. He regularly wins Hamilton by big margins. Good luck Dems- you'll need it.
New story, new year, new Era
Sorry, JerzeyGirl, but you could not be more mistaken if you had posted that W is the most popular President since FDR. All of the Bush backers in this Congress, including Mr. Smith, are wide open for defeat in this cycle. A brand new era is coming in both National and local politics in this country, the likes of which none of us baby boomers has seen since 1968. Fasten your seatbelts, folks. It's going to be a wild and crazy ride all the way from Ocean through Monmouth, Mercer and Burlington and straight down I95 to both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue!
Anyone who takes a gander at
Anyone who takes a gander at Zeitz's contributions at the FEC website knows the vast majority of all of this money he is raising is NOT coming from the 4th district. Where the money is coming from is just as telling as how much is coming in.
Money is
still money in a campaign... he has done a better job of other Smith challengers in that regard... I still don't think he will win though, especially after the numbers Chris pulled in '06, the worst GOP year since Watergate.
Act Blue 37,000 Campaign Contribution
The fact is Josh Zeitz's has not received any donations from the residents of Hamilton in the fourth district .He received 37,000 from Act Blue which is a out of state Pac that wants to buy influence in the district and further their limosine liberal agenda and raise taxes on the hard working middle class people of Hamilton. Also I am impressed by the support he has from John Cimino who could not be elected dog catcher in Hamilton even with daddyboy Skippy calling in all his favors from his past deals. Then we have Dan Benson who was run out of Hamilton. If Josh is for the regular guy why is all his donations coming from Big Corporations that happen to do business with his father who is a big time democratic operative. All these facts are on the FEC website.Welcome to Hamilton Josh.
Tigeryankee007 is wrong on the facts (and is also rude)
Tigeryankee007 is badly misinformed.
1) Act Blue is not a PAC; it's a clearing house for online contributions. No PAC could legally contribute that much money to one candidate. It's just a credit card clearing house. So it's accurate to say that Zeitz has taken $37,000 in online contributions, and that they were processed by Act Blue. Almost every Dem in the country uses it for credit card processing.
2) According to OpenSecrets.org, 4% of Zeitz's contributions are from PACs; 96% are from individuals. The same nonpartisan site says that 27% of Chris Smith's contributions are from PACs. So who's taking the "out of state PAC" money? Seems like it's Smith, not Zeitz.
3) Opensecrets says that 41% of Zeitz's individual contributions are in state; 60% of Smith's individual contributions are in-state. But virtualy ALL of Smith's PAC money comes from out of state. And PAC money is 27% of his total funds. So they are probably taking the same amount of out of state money. Smith may be taking more.
4) Zeitz has taken no money from "Big Corporations." Neither has Smith. That's not even legal. Corporations can't contribute to candidates. That's a very serious charge. If you can't prove it, you should do the honest and honrable thing and edit it out of your post.
5) Finally, you're a real class act, Tigeryankee. Dragging Benson and Cimino into a story that doesn't concern them, and issuing ad hominem attacks, is just real classy. Going after someone's parent is equally classy. Maybe you should insult their household pets. Or their grandmothers. That would also be very classy, too.
All Facts George
The FEC website lists the Big corporations that gave him money. These are facts. Josh Zeitz went against Congressman Smith and totally disrespected him with false allegations and half truths. You can go on the site to verify the names of the corporations. Both Cimino and Benson are fair game and should realize that this is New Jersey politics.
Smith is Safe..
Especially in Hamilton, where just his name wins him elections.
If the Smith campaign does even a little more than the very little they did in 06 while dominating, then this will be a pretty big blowout.
I wouldn't count on Obama coattails either for Zeitz, McCain will win the 4th CD and even if Hamilton voters go for Obama (which they probably won't), they are notorious for splitting their tickets.
Wrong again, Tigeryankee
Tigeryankee, you're not getting this: Corporations CANNOT contribute to federal candidates. I think they may be able to give to state candidates, but I'm not sure. You will not find a single corporate contribution to either Smith or Zeitz, or any other congressional candidate. They can't take them. So, again, no, the FEC does not show corporate contributions. They don't exist. If you think they do, why not share specific examples with the readers? If not, please give it up. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. You're embarrassing yourself.
this guy has less of a
this guy has less of a chance than Seema Singh had against Bill Baroni.
just because he has the democrats funding from OUT of state areas. Proof? the lady who wrote a beautiful little piece about him in the Trentonian is from PHILLY. not hamilton, she cant even vote. but of course, like others (and both democrats and republicans when i say this) these days, takes outside funding from PAC's and the money funneled down from Jack Morris (in his case) and others in the north jersey area and spends it. all of that by the way, tainted money.
also as proof of his imminent failure, he has John Cimino say he is going to sweep. thats just bad Karma there. guys like 0-4 in elections.
good luck, your going to need it.
Facts George.Carteret
Here is the facts George Citigroup $4,850,Morgan Stanley 3,500,Microsoft Corp 1,000,A-Mark Financial 1,000,Daiwa Securities America,1,000,Lehman Brothers,1,150.Swap Financial Group.2,300.and a host of others.George you can make all the lies up and half truths and spin them to the cows come home. The fact are on on the FEC site. The bottom line is no one in Hamilton or any trade unions are backing Josh.
Sorry, Tigeryankee
I see where you're confused, Tigeryankee. The FEC collects information on the name and employer of every contributor. You'r reading the reports wrong. Citicorp can't give money to a candidate, but any of its tens of thousands of employees are free to donate. Same with Morgan Stanley, or any other company. Smith also takes money from people who work for corporations/companies. BMG ($13,800)-- Elliot Management ($13,800). Does that mean that he took corporate money? No. It means that both candidates took money from people who work for big companies. So what? In today's world, most people work for someone else. How many of us are lucky enough to be self-employed? Why shouldn't the majority of us be allowed to donate to political candidates? This isn't meant to be snide. I'm just trying to explain how the reporting system works. Nobody takes corporate money.
Small Crowd
The crowd at Josh Zeitz office opening was very impressive. There was 12 people and none of the so called officials in attendence ever won a race in Hamilton. But Rich McClellan will do a spin job and get his cronies like George to defend all the outside money coming into the race .We finally got rid of Rich and Glen Gilmore and now they are back trying to use Josh to get more of the hard working residents of Hamilton money so, they can give more no bid contracts out.
There were more people there
I was at the event for about twenty minutes, GOP Mercer. I'm not sure where you got your number from. Was it in the article? Maybe you were there early, or on the later side? I can't speak to the crowd before or after I left, but I counted wel over 50 people, including the handful of elected officials. It was definitely a crowded room. Where is Chris Smith's office, out of curiosity? Is it in Hamilton? Is he campaigning much in the district?
Smith is "Yesterday's man"
The Brits have a name for someone like Smith:
YESTERDAY'S MAN
I am an Independent Moderate and know many other independents in the district who are voting AGAINST Smith. Anybody but a Republican.
Republicans ran Congress from 1994 to 2006.
And look what we have for it now?
These Republicans in office now have ruined us all and ruined our children's and grand-children's futures.
It will probably be close
I would bet that we have a better than even chance of removing Chris Smith from office in November. It will depend upon our ability to get Mr. Zeitz in front of a lot of voters. I say this because I follow politics pretty closely and I didn’t find out until today that Joshua was going up against Smith. If I didn’t know I have to believe 90% of the voters don’t know!
It is also vitally important that we convince Democrats and Independents that we cannot continue to support Republican members of Congress, even though they may be “moderates”. I have always found it interesting that while Congress has a very low approval rating, the great majority of voters believe “their” congressman is OK. Unfortunately, we are living in a time when every vote counts; especially in Congress. This means that in order to overcome Republican obstructionism every Republican must be defeated.
What further proof of this do you need than the fact that moderate Mr. Smith voted against protecting military personnel from the consequences of the new bankruptcy bill. As a result National Guard and reserve members, who have been called up for duty and are suffering terrible financial difficulties as a result, can’t get protection from bankruptcy. How many of you could maintain you housing payments (mortgage or rent) and your credit card and auto loans and feed your kids if all of a sudden your income was cut by half? Put aside the fact that it was a bad bill in the first place that never would have passed if Democrats had more control of the congress. It passed because people like us accepted “our” representative as being OK.
Unfortunately, Congress is too partisan for us to continue to support even moderate Republicans (or, for that matter, very conservative Democrats).
Need more proof? For the third day now, a group of Republican Representatives are standing in the dark giving speeches to each other about the absolute need to open up additional areas for offshore drilling. No long range plan; no inclusion of any other solutions; no acknowledgement of the fact that the oil companies are already sitting on millions of acres of available acreage. Just drill. Considering that it will take ten years for the first drop of this new oil to reach market; and considering that it will only reduce gas process by approximately 6 cents when it does get here you really have to wonder just how ridicules they are being. The funny part is that they are actually claiming that they are the reason gas prices have fallen in the last few days. This kind of nonsense has to stop.
I am going to support Mr. Zeitz because Chris Smith does not represent my priorities and because I want the congress to start producing solutions to our problems, not obstructions.
