Longtime McCain backer Kean likes McCain-Crist ticket

ASBURY PARK - A supporter of Sen. John McCain’s since the Arizona senator’s first run for president in 2000, state Sen. Sean Kean (R-Monmouth) said he believes Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Jr., would be a good running mate for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"Florida’s an important state and Crist is popular," Kean told PolitickerNJ.com.

He also likes the fact that Crist is a governor, which adds an executive dimension to the candidacy of McCain, who has served in the U.S. Congress for two decades.

Kean personally likes former Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, but acknowledges that Ridge’s pro choice views might alienate critical base Republican voters.

The senator left open the possibility that McCain could spring a surprise choice. "McCain has the capability to take somebody no one’s talking about," Kean said.

Charlie Crist

I like Charlie Crist too but he's not the man for the job right now.

As much as I hate to say it, Mitt Romney is probably the best choice Sen. McCain can make. I hold out hope for Rudy, but he'll probably end up being tapped by McCain to be Attorney General.

Romney will help put crucial swing states like Michgan and Colorado into McCain's column.

Florida

If McCain can't win Florida on his own then he's toast.

He cant

Christ wins Florida, but not much else. McCain should be able to make Florida a contest and pick someone from the mid-west or the southwest.

Crist

McCain would not be the nominee had it not been for Crist. That said, if McCain can't win FL without Crist, he has bigger problems. I agree with Dino. Romney makes the most sense here. This race will turn on leadership ability and competence on the economy. Even your most liberal dems will concede Romney is as accomplished as anyone in either field in that area.

Romney does not hurt McCain in existing red states and helps in MI, MN, NH, CO & NV.

Rom

The only problem with Romney is that his liberal record as Gov could (so far it hasnt) hurt him with the Conservative wing of the party that McCain needs to sure up. Romney doesnt make that much of a dent in MI or NH come November
