SEA GIRT - It was a happy political scene to walk into there in the basement of the Parker House last night, as Obama button-clad volunteers with clipboards approached Hudson County political operatives and asked them if they wanted to sign on to help with the campaign.

Some of the latter were onetime Hillary Clinton backers for whom the change-up to Obama is a painful perhaps but ultimately natural function of primary politics.

They didn’t need the enthusiastic prodding of volunteers to get them to go there.

"We’re already on board," said Jason O’Donnell, chairman of the Bayonne City Regular Democratic Organization.

Awkward maybe, but the exchange revealed what State Chairman Joseph Cryan describes as a "win-win" for his party, as Democrats hope to blend traditional machine and new grassroots soldiers into one general election march.

In ragtag step were those roughly 150 members and friends of Democrats 2000, young party members seeking greater representation of their generation in elected office, who came here to the Parker House to jaw about politics over the open bar.

Gov. Jon Corzine and a flood of young staffers from his administration made an appearance at the beach bash. The governor could be observed talking with Monmouth County freeholder candidate Amy Mallet.

If Obama might be the ultimate "youth" candidate on the national level for some of these Democrats, Assemblyman Ruben Ramos (D-Hoboken), Middlesex County Freeholder James Polos, Orange Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, South Plainfield Council candidate Christine Buteas and many others are the local beneficiaries of this organization, which backs young politicians around the state.

Every year, the organization finds candidates under 40 and draws up a "recommended" list. The candidates on that list get donations from Democrats 2000.

"We have a very balanced board," said executive board member Elizabeth Meyers of Middlesex. "We attempt to put all politics aside for the good of the party. It’s about all of us working to elect people of our age group."

Democrats 2000 is a revamped relic of the 1990s, when Ben Dworkin Mike GiglioMike Gigliofounded the group. Now state committee tech and U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-12) campaign manager Mike Giglio serves as president.

The organization raised $35,000 on Thursday.

In the crowd were former Clinton finance director Samantha Maltzman rubbing shoulders with Young Lawyers for Obama rep. Michael J. Passante of Hoboken.

Opposing veterans of the latest intra-party scrap between U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and his primary challenger, U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-1), Lautenberg district director Steve Lenox and Andrews chief of staff Bill Caruso shared a laugh.

Let me get it straight. All those yong (under 40) Democratic operatives work on taxpayers' funded wages and then donate money to this organization to be spend on Democratic candidates under 40 in NJ. Is that the way young Democrats are trained in becoming corrupt Democratic politicians?

They LOOK like normal

They LOOK like normal Americans in the photos but want to move to a socialist based government-run healthcare, income redistribution, bigger and more powerful government, less individual liberty, higher taxes, extend our dependence on foreign oil, undermine the success of the troop surge and stabalization of Iraq, allow Iran to get nuclear weapons and place the future of the Israel in jeapardy.

Then they get upset when someone questions their patriotism.

Sour Republicans?

So if you work in the public sector you can't financially support a group of young operatives who promote next generation participation and advancement??? with regards to the rest of these statements, I wonder if you even read what you wrote before you submitted it, if so that just makes your statements on Iraq , oil, and liberty even more SAD. Go back under whatever rock you crawled out from under! Mike, Liz and others... Great job last night and keep up the good work!
