Republican State Committee Chairman Tom Wilson today joined the GOP chorus demanding that Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) return contributions from U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-Harlem) following publication of a New York Times story this week detailing sweetheart deals the congressman received on four Harlem apartments.
"Linda Stender has filled her campaign coffers with over $20,000 in contributions from Charlie Rangel and plans to accept even more as a recipient of his annual birthday fund-raiser at New York’s swank Tavern on the Green restaurant scheduled for August 6th," Wilson said.
"Stender likes to tell everyone how she's not a typical politician and that she will stand up to Washington corruption but unless she returns the $21,000 from Rangel and his political action committee that's fueling her campaign and remove her name for his up coming fund-raiser, she just proves that she is another typical double-talking politician that's incapable of changing Washington," added the GOP chairman.
Following yesterday’s initial National Republican Congressional Committee throw-down to the Stender campaign and Wilson’s back-up condemnation, Stender’s opponent, state Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Hunterdon) also chastised the Democrat.
"We agree with the chairman that after the New York Times report, Linda Stender should cancel her appearance at the upcoming event and give back the money," said Lance spokeswoman Amanda Woloshen.
Rangel, chair of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, is scheduled to have a press conference today to address the New York Times story.
"We’re waiting to see what comes out of the press conference," said Stender spokeswoman Abby Curran.

When Mike Ferguson Gives Back DeLay's Money
We can talk.
Rangel, shame on you!
Mr. Rangel, shame on you for pretending to be fair and defending poor people. Shame on you for using the system to your own advantage in such a low way. It is beyond my comprehension. As a Democrat in the US Congress you should be expelled.
I have a simple suggestion. Why don’t you move to one (I repeat ONE apartment) and pay a fair market value on it.
Stop making us feeling stupid.
As for Stender, it is time to stand up against corruption, don't you agree?
Formerly Anon. = Dem. Hack
Did I miss the article that said Ferguson was running?
If this was an R you'd be all over it, admit it.
I find myself laughing at Stender's press releases and statements that always bring up Bush. I must have forgot he was running again..
It's even more funny that she's too scared to go after Lance..is she running against Bush or something?
Linda Stender, Tax and Spender!
Stender won't give Rangel the money back because she's an opportunist and a tax and spender!
Can you imagine these liberal hacks at the Constitutional Convention 230 years ago telling our founding fathers that government needs to, as Clinton put it, "Take from you to give to others," or as Corzine stated that he needed to raise highway taxes 500% to make the Parkway safer for his 93 mph excursions?
What would our Founding Fathers do? They'd tar-and-feather Rangel and Stender!
"I figure people drift toward liberalism at a young age, and I always hope that they change when they see how the world really is.”
- Johnny Ramone
Ashcroft should run.
When ashcroft is a congressman in NJ, then I'll worry about Charlie Rangle.
