Hunterdon County Freeholder William Mennen, heir to the deodorant fortune, told PolitickerNJ.com that he won’t run for the U.S. Senate this year. Mennen had briefly considered a run for U.S. Congress in the 7th District last year before backing state Sen. Leonard Lance.
"I made it clear a couple of months ago that I would put my efforts into being more local, said Mennen, an attorney whose family’s roots are in Newark.
Mennen said he was sorry to learn of the departure from the Senate race of businesswoman Anne Evans Estabrook, and wished her a speedy recovery.
But as for his own plans for higher office, "No, not this time around," he said. "It’s a little late in the season, and more importantly I’ve committed myself to a lot of things. My plates full right now. I wish the field well.
"I’m on the sidelines watching that race unfold," Mennen added, "and I am taking an active part in the congressional race as an ally of Leonard Lance."
