Morin could face challenge for Union GOP Chairman

Four-time Union County Freeholder candidate Patricia Quattrocchi said that she likes her county chairman, Phil Morin. But the party desperately needs a jolt, and she thinks she may be the one who can provide it.

“We need some electricity here in Union County,” said Quattrocchi, who is considering running for Morin’s post in June. Currently, she’s assistant vice-chair of the party.

Next month marks 10 years since the last Republican left the Union County Freeholder Board, and local Republicans find themselves in a situation similar to their Bergen County brethren. They can remember when they dominated in the not-so-distant past, but that control has since given way to a Democratic machine controlled by powerful Democratic boss Charlotte DeFilippo and, amongst some local Republicans, a sense of hopelessness.

Although she’s never won any of her multiple freeholder races, Quattrocchi, said that she came closer this year than ever before, earning about 3,800 votes less than her nearest Democratic opponent. That’s a difference she thinks she could have made up for if she didn’t have to undergo surgery for a skull lesion that took her off the campaign trail in the weeks leading up to the election.

Quattrocchi said that her experience running four times has taught her a lot about how the Democrats operate.

“When you’re running against a machine one of the things you need to do is have knowledge of how the machine works,” she said.

Quattrocchi said that she can’t blame Morin as the cause for the party’s woes, as he inherited it when it was already in bad shape. And her decision on whether or not to run will depend largely on how Morin does with fundraising and candidate recruitment efforts over the next several months.

Former Republican state Senate candidate Daniel Nozza, a chiropractor who’s run for the chairmanship before, is said to be interested in challenging Morin as well, but could not be reached for comment.

Morin, who’s been in office for four years, said that he does not plan to relinquish his seat, and refused to blame his predecessors for the party’s lack of resources.

“No one left me with any debt. To me that was a big thing,” said Morin. “No surprise bills at least.”

Republicans are starting to make progress on a municipal level, he said, noting that they took the mayoral seat and control of Kenilworth and took out two incumbent council members in Cranford -- towns that had been trending Democratic since the 90s. Morin also emphasized that Republicans picked up a council seat in the Democratic majority towns of Springfield and Fanwood. And this year’s freeholder race, when Quattrocchi was the highest Republican vote getter, was closer than in previous years.

“I think this year, from a municipal standpoint, was an outstanding year , and I think we supported some very key races and we’re very successful in putting an number of Republicans into office and improving on Republican control in some communities,” said Morin. “I think we can always do better, but we’re definitely headed in the right direction.”

The Union County GOP just recently held a holiday fundraiser that featured potential U.S. Senate candidate Joe Pennacchio and a number of Republicans interested in seeking the congressional seat being vacated by Mike Ferguson.

“We don’t have the funds certainly that the organization that has control of the county does, but I think we do a good job of picking the races to support to get good republicans in office,” said Morin.

slow news day?

Whoever comes out on the short end of this battle can always become the next Captain of the Titanic.  Pat has lots of pluck but I'm not sure she's ready to take on this position.

Pat would be great

It would be nice to have a chairman with a pulse.

Pat would put some life in GOP.

Phil is a phoney claiming the municipal victories as his successes.  His support of the County races this year was pathetic. Pat has networked the local Chairs and will have the votes.  She has a position that is pro her rather than anti Phil. Dr Dan has not been active lately and doesn't realize that much has passed him by.

Garfield?

Hey  There is no Garfield in Union County. I think Pat was a couincilwoman  Garwood

Pat's been a Horrible Freeholder Candidate

She's run 4 freeholder races and lost all of them.  She's also lost several races for councilwoman in Garwood, I think she only became a councilwoman because of an interim appointment.

The only reason she came close was the third party candidates and the fact it was a very low turnout year.  If you look at how the GOP did in 2003 for Union County Freeholder (a year like 2007), you'll see they did the same as they did in 2007.  So she did well in a fluke.

Morin has done a good job based on what he inherited.  The party has trouble raising money because they don't have the county patronage, but they've done a good job on the local level and Phil should be praised for doing that.  Noone, but Pat, wants to run countywide since  Republican can't win countywide in Union County.  I say keep Phil and let Pat find another office to run for.

Phil was too busy with his private practice.

The muni victories were the candidates and the local orgs.  He had two county candidates that didn't campaign.  There was no coordination with the LD candidates.  The 20 and 29 LDs were not even on the website.  21 and 22 LDs ran their own shows.

It is interesting that the County Committee is a rather "closed" club and they are the ones after Phil's scalp.  Blaming lack of patronage is a moot issue.  The GOP was never good at it to begin with.

Phil only cares about D21

A COUNTY chairman needs to focus on the entire county and not just one legislative district. Pat is a great person and would be a true asset to the party as the chiar. I also like Dan Nozza in Elizabeth too...he's got a set and he's not scared to use them!

Union GOP Chairman should be...

KATHI FIAMINGO. She is the only one to get things done when need it be. This past election she took back the mayoral seat in Kenilworth along with her running mates taking two more council seats. She clearly has the experience and with her involvement in the Union GOP she shouldn't have a problem being chairman.

I have no problem with Mayor Kathi.

Having somebody from the 20th LD might give some balance.  The issue would be - would she have the time to do it?  She has much on her plate with the sewage issue.

Kathi F not a good choice

She is too connected to Phil and his crew. The party needs a fresh begining, not another member of the follow-the-leader crew. Change is needed and the GOP in the county is starving for it.

Kathi Fiamingo/UCGOP

Kathi is a great choice. However I think being sworn in as Mayor will prevent her from having the time it will take to get the UCGOP back on the tracks. There doesn't seem to be a deep bench for Chair if its not going to be Morin. Quattrocchi is a nice lady but I hear she's having serious health issues.

01/02/08 10:24 am

The reason that there isn't a deep bench

Phil kept it that way.  The Exec is almost all 21st LD.  Weren't all the County candidates out of the 21st?  It is up the the people in the 20th and 22nd (29th is only Hillside) to organize strong committees for the next Primary.

Unity isn't an issue with blood in the water.
