Mowers named BCRO Executive Director

Eighteen-year-old Matt Mowers has not yet started his second semester at Rutgers, but he’s about to begin a job as Executive Director of the Bergen County Republican Organization.

Mowers, who managed state Sen. Gerald Cardinale’s reelection campaign, will begin work on Wednesday, making him by far the youngest executive director in the state. He’ll do that while remaining a full-time student.

“I’ve worked it out. Same as last semester -- creative scheduling,” said Mowers, who lives in East Brunswick.

Mowers got to know BCRO Chairman Rob Ortiz while working on the Cardinale campaign. About a month after the election, Ortiz offered him the vacant post.

“We’re excited to continue working with Matt,” said Ortiz. “I said that I wanted him to be an integral part of building in Bergen, and he accepted my offer.”

Mowers said that, since the job is paid, he won’t get college credit for doing it.

Good Move

Good move by Chairman Ortiz. Mowers is more then qualified for the job, despite his age. I'm sure you'll hear some grumbling about putting an 18 year old college student as an executive director now, but I definately feel that Mowers is going to handle the job well and do a great job.

Good Luck Matt!

12/31/07 2:05 pm

Mowers very well maybe qaulified, but ...

This concern isn't about his age, but rather that he is a full-time student at a campus outside the immediate area of the Hackensack HQ.  I wish him luck, but knowing the BCRO CC, an ED that isn't in HQ will create problems fair or unfair, this is going to be a problem.

good luck with all that.

12/31/07 5:56 pm

wrong move at the wrong time

Nothing against Matt. If Mr Ortiz really wanted unity he would have asked a more mature experienced person.

Charlie Kahwaty  past president of the Bergen Bar association and former canddate should have been the   smart choice.

12/31/07 7:40 pm

Wow yet Another Reason

why Ortiz will lose a second term

12/31/07 8:00 pm

District 39

Nobody in county committee  outside district 39 insiders knows this guy. What happened to Mike and Ray ? they are known and respected by all Republicans in the county and they work for FREE, full time.  Wondering just who is advising Rob on this one ?. Why make problems for yourself when you don't need to .

12/31/07 8:08 pm

Sandbox projects

What playground sandbox did Ortiz find this kid playing in? If this is the BCRO's pick for ED, we all can't wait to see what kind of candidates they throw up in 2008!

12/31/07 8:24 pm

Republicans in this state

Republicans in this state continue to look dumber and dumber.  Do they like losing elections?  What a pathetic group.

12/31/07 9:33 pm

Oi Weih they just lost the Arab- American vote

not that we ever had it .ok Eric and his college pals have taken over the BCRO or whats left of it. Do we have to wait until June to pick up the pieces.?

Earth to Bob, Bill and Ben  its time for you three adults to get together and save the party now.

01/01/08 9:58 am

Mowers is right choice

Matt Mowers is the only one that can cause some change in Bergen. Clearly anyone that is there is not getting anything done so some young faces, like him, might just be the right choice to shake up the arena. This is probably Ortiz's smartest move.

01/01/08 11:16 am

Does Matt get nap time too?

Will Ortiz give him "Nap Time" too?

Well at least Ortiz and Mowers keep the fine BCRO/Kevin Collins tradition of condoning racially inflammatory literature!

01/01/08 11:16 am

Mowers is a good choice

We need some younger blood in the party, you guys who want to stick to the same failures are completely pathetic. Enough with the cabal of losers, I suppose you all want Bergen to become like the nonexistent Middlesex and Hudson GOPs. Mowers is a step in the right direction.

01/01/08 1:21 pm

Geez

What ever happened to giving someone a shot?

I find the claim that my "college budies" and I are taking over the BCRO pretty funny, considering I really wasn't in Bergen too much in 2007 and I basically live in Monmouth County now. I'm just registered to vote up in Bergen and my family is there.

Why doesn't everyone give Matt a shot and see how he does before jumping on him?

01/01/08 3:40 pm

its NOT about just giving anyone a shot

Eric and the college boys just don't get it.How many years have any of you worked on a county level ?How much did you donate ? How many county campaigns did you run ?How many county events have you run ? Just how many Muni  and District chairs do you know?  let alone county committee folk. There are a lot of good folk that live in Bergen also members of the YRs    who have put in their time and have earned that right to  to that  job  before   the Britney Spears generation of Frat boys and girls . This job is for a friendly face like a Vince Micco or a Charlie Kahwaty ( people who know how to reach out to all Republicans)

01/01/08 3:57 pm

Have you ever considered

Have you ever considered giving new blood a shot?

Look I respect your views but your judging a book by it's cover pretty harshly. Do you even know Matt Mowers? What if Kahwaty and Micco didn't want the job?

How much do I donate? That is so ludicrous. Are you seriously judging someone based on how much money they donate? I've never donated one penny to any campaign. Does that mean I'm not qualified for any job within the party? Let me tell you it's so easy to make money as a full time college student who volunteers a lot of their time helping Republicans. Mowers is 4 years younger then me and he's had more experience helping out Republicans then I've had at this point. I'm sure he got to know some of the Muni and District chairs while working for the 39th District Republicans.

Classifying us as the "Britney Spears generation of Frat boys and girls" is stereotyping. You take a look at what you see or what you think you know about college kids and you judge everyone based  on that assumption. I know Matt worked incredibly hard in the 39th and I volunteered all I could down in the 14th in 07. Instead of stereotyping why don't you try and get to know someone? Because it's incredibly unfair that you automatically judge someone based on the fact that they happen to be in college. I guess that means I drink every night and party every weekend.

I'd say more but I've got an all day drinking binge to attend to.

01/01/08 4:24 pm

Eric works hard

I don't know Matt at all. Although I will admit that I wasn't impressed with elements of Cardinale's campaign... I think his staff went too negative, and negative on some of the wrong points. However, it's pretty apparent Matt works hard and learns quickly. I'm sure he'll jump into this with as much energy as he did working Cardinale's campaign.

However, this post is actually about Eric. I don't know why Bergenite is jumping all over Eric. Honestly. I worked with him on Baroni, Goodwin, and Bushman's campaign in the 14th. He works hard and he has enough experience to really help a political organization. What's the opposition to young, talented, dedicated volunteers? Besides, we'll need someone to take over the party down the road.

01/01/08 4:58 pm

The Young vs. The Old

The BCRO has been listless because of the patronage the likes of Talarico instituted in his choice of candidates, yet some of you would argue for that to continue.  Are you kidding?

I was in Eric and Matt's shoes at one point.  After the Cardinale mailer, I'm not a Mowers' fan, but he can learn.  The problem with slamming the young simply for being young is that you lose good people and cut off the motivation of the foot soldiers that remain when they are who you need to win campaigns.  Experience isn't gained by being pat on the head and put in the corner, it's by being in the trenches.  So keep on insulting them and keep watching your numbers shrink.

Republicans are outnumbered by about 12,000 Democrats in Bergen.  However, there are nearly 300,000 unaffiliated voters.  Some of them may be under 40, or even 30, or *gasp* under 20 and might be looking to get involved.  Exclusionary messages based on age discourage the curious and disengage the active.  Thanks to Talarico, you guys need all the help you can get in order to be competitive county wide.  Performance over patronage is what brings you back.

If you're looking for a glad handing figurehead who's been around a while, then get Ortiz to name somebody else.  If you're looking for a trench experienced manager, Mowers was arguably the BCRO's biggest winner for last year.

01/01/08 5:05 pm

Bergenite is right, I heard

Bergenite is right, I heard Mowers and Sedler are planning a huge frat party at the BCRO and none of us old people are invited.

01/01/08 5:05 pm

Bergenite

You honestly think someone should be hired as an ED based on how much they donate? Sounds like someone feels as though they got passed over. For an 18 year old!

01/01/08 5:20 pm

Age issue?

Age is not always an issue when it comes to performance. Go ask any of the thousands of 21-year-old sergeants in our armed forces who lead squads into combat. A few years of intense training can make a big difference. And this guy has had that.

Respect among his peers is another story. He may know how to write a top-notch piece of racist, slanderous mail, but it doesn't mean a political veteran won't take notice that he only has to shave every 3-4 days.

If the BCRO's ED had to lead a bunch of 18-year-old privates, it wouldn't be a problem. But from what I understand, the average age of a Bergen county committee member is 112.

Good luck.

01/01/08 5:21 pm

The Mailer

I don't know Mowers, but I think before anyone talks about the mailer we would all need to know that the mailer was a strictly Mowers decision and move. There were more people working on that campaign and it could have been a move by a consultant or Cardinale himself. If anyone's ever seen some of Gerry's quotes or long winded speeches in the judiciary committee they can certainly understand that the mailer was probably Gerry's move.

Don't think we can place all the blame on Mowers for that one. Obviously it wasn't a good move by whomever and he can use it as a learning experience, but I have a hard time that was solely his decision and not just some consultant or Gerry himself.

01/01/08 5:28 pm

Results

Didn't Cardinale win? I don't understand (if you are on the Republican side) why a mailer is such a big deal if it is part of a winning campaign. Naturally if you are a Dem it makes for fantastic sour grapes.

01/01/08 5:36 pm

Mailer

There was no need to stoop to that level to win. Cardinale had it won easily before that, he actually fractured his votes by doing that. He was up by like 20% in polls before that and ended up winnin by not so much on election day.

Didn't hurt him that his opponent was a Ferriero hack who really was a bad candidate though.

01/01/08 5:59 pm

We were all just kids once...

...and the BCRO really needs to start from the bottom anyway.  The winning EDs on the Dem side certainly haven't been elder statesmen themselves and they've been kicking the crap out of the "mature" and "experienced" BCRO crew for a while now.  Perhaps bringing this kid in will make things a little more interesting and competitive come November.  Presuming, of course, they can find non-creepy candidates that are younger than Methuselah and not drive away every moderate in sight.  Regardless of what side you're on, it's no fun when there's no competition.

 Good luck, Matt!!!

01/01/08 6:17 pm

The New Blood argument

Bergen County Republican Org  has seen new blood over the last 4 years, some younger than others. Young blood is good for party building. However throwing out everyone who was there  for the last 3-4 years  both young and old  does nothing to   unite  an   already fractured party.

01/01/08 6:23 pm

What is the problem?

It's about time we had some new blood (i.e. new "young" people) running campaigns instead of the same tired losers who have made New Jersey Republicans a JOKE! It's time for an infusion of people who will not run the same tired campaigns that New Jersey Republicans are famous for.

On a second point, Jerry was right to put out that mailer if you are terrorist, a terrorist sympathizer, or you defend terrorists you should be called on the carpet for it and people need to know what a bad person you really are. Let's face it Jerry is a conservative's conservative representing a Republican District that GWB won in 2004. He wins in his district because he is willing to take a stand against issues which liberals hate - like terrorism, illegal aliens, gay marriage and an activist NJ Supreme Court. It's a shame I don't live in his district, because I would be happy to vote for him!

01/01/08 6:26 pm

BURLINGTON CO. GOP

should've taken lessons from Ortiz.  It's about time some young talent is being recognized and "has beens" are not being recycled.Good luck to Mr. Mowers!

01/01/08 6:28 pm

some simple questions for an Admin Job applicant

1) Will Matt answer the phones every day ?  2) Will Matt send out meeting  and event notices to all county committee ?   3) will Matt be there to sign for mail and handle routine admin duties ?    4) will the BCRO now stop hiring event co ordinator that cost money ?   Its all about the Job not the person who is going to do it.   If the answer is NO to any of these questions then get someone else.

01/01/08 7:21 pm

ESedler & Mowers

Eric Sedler - so you're admitting you are committing VOTER FRAUD every time you step into a voting booth in BERGEN??  Interesting.

The complaints about Matt Mowers aren't necessarily all about his age.  It's nice some of his college buddies signed up to defend him here.  But, the problem is 1) he doesn't live in BERGEN, 2) has little to NO experience with Bergen County Committee members, 3) with 1 million residents living in Bergen, I'm sure there are plenty more qualified individuals who could do the job (young, old and in the middle) and 4) Ortiz would have been smart to hire someone who the county committee knows.  The ED doesn't need to be a rocket scientist, but to have some sway with the county committee would help the chairman.

Finally, is the BCRO headquarters being relocated to East Brunswick?

01/01/08 7:32 pm

Mowers WHO????

Cardinale didn't win because of Mowers. Cardinale won because of Cardinale.

To hire an ED FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTY is ridiculous.  He may know some folks in District 39, but what about all those in between, from North Arlington to Mahwah?

Whatever happened to having the best person for the job??

Is this guy going to be in charge of the volunteers? He doesn't even know who the volunteers are!  Is he going to answer the phones 5 or 6 days a week?  Maybe in between doing his Rutgers coursework online?

Well now that there is a full time ED, then an out-of-county fund-raising firm running parties that aren't even  fundraisers isn't needed.  Oh... do we know if Mowers has any event experience?

Listen folks, you get what you pay for, and this guy is going to go down in flames.

By the way if there is no money, and the BCRO is still $38,000 in debt, how is Mowers getting paid? Where is all the money that was supposedly made at the September event? Where is the treasurer's report? Where are the ELEC reports? Oh, I forgot, the treasurer is also from OUT OF COUNTY.

Ortiz is making a large mistake by totally ignoring those who have been the mainstays of the organization through thick and thin and who will be around when he is gone... like when he doesn't run again in June because Rudy won't be the nominee.

01/01/08 8:08 pm

Kinda glad im not in bergen after seeing these comments..

"Eric Sedler - so you're admitting you are committing VOTER FRAUD every time you step into a voting booth in BERGEN??  Interesting."

Greatest line ever...I don't even know if I want to respond to that because it's incredibly baseless.

Fist off your assumption is wrong, I've never stepped foot in a voting booth in Bergen, I vote absentee.

Second off how is it voter fraud considering I lived full time in the 39th district for 18 years of my life and my mother still lives there, in the same house I grew up in and stop by whenever I go back home. You know how many times I would have had to change my voter registration address since I started college? I don't think dorm room addresses are really good for voting purposes, I've had 4 different addresses in college. This is my first year actually holding some kind of a permanent address because I live off campus in an apartment and I'm certianly not able to predict if I'll be living there  after the lease is up let  alone once I finally graduate.

Can you imagine the number of college students committing voter fraud according to your analysis?

Just shows you that it's better to actually know someone than make your assumptions. Too bad Matt Mowers has some people who would rather fight over his hiring than help him out and improve the BCRO.

01/01/08 8:28 pm

Give Him a Trial Run...

Mowers if you are reading this just remember to say no to anything that makes the party backward or ridiculous. You may be saying no a lot.

01/01/08 9:09 pm

NOTE TO DEMS

"Eric Sedler - so you're admitting you are committing VOTER FRAUD every time you step into a voting booth in BERGEN??  Interesting."

While we watch this silly trivial debate go forward, make sure your Democratic Challengers do their jobs and challange Mr Sedler should he decide to ever enter a Bergen County voting booth again.

Then let a Bergen County Judge decide if it's voter fraud.

Thanks for the info Eric! And then Eric tries to defend his sandbox buddy - How very laughable.

Students have a choice

They can either vote at home or can vote where their school is.  There's no discussion or issue.

01/01/08 9:44 pm

Benedict Arnold

You're an idiot. Go back to whining about a mailer instead of spreading lies about election law, it seems to be your stronger suit.

01/01/08 10:03 pm

wow...

The personal attacks on here are getting out of control. Now I know what it feels like to be MartinOne.

I'll say this for the last time on this story. If anyone wants to combat the Ferriero machine in Bergen County I suggest you unite behind Ortiz and whoever he decides to employ, I commend you and applaud your efforts. I respect different opinioins but everybody knows a united effort of all different kinds of Republicans will work best for the BCRO.

Those who wish to continue being negative and don't want to help out, good luck with that.

As for Benedict Arnold's comments: By now it's well established that i'm a college student. What Fretz said is exactly right, we have a choice. Many college students like me who can not make it to their voting locations on election day choose to vote absentee. Some college students do decide to change their address and vote in the area/district they go to school in. I have not decided to do that at this time. My college address has changed each year I've gone to college so I feel it's better to wait until I have a more stable address, which will almost definately be after I graduate and I am no longer a student.

Happy New Year to Everyone. Good Luck Matt!

Very Bad Idea

Fat chance mowers will get any of us teen republicans, the largest group of volunteers in the county to work for him...I had the unfortunate experience of working with mowers on the cardinale campaign, a campaign in which mowers' conduct whittled the dozen or so volunteers who wanted to help out down to about five.

He may get the job done, but I doubt any of my colleagues will be willing to help him.

That's a really generic name to post under. Maybe you should find out what "the kids" are doing these days. You're obviously an older guy pretending to be a teenager on this board. That's pretty creepy. Guest star on "To Catch a Predator" at all?

01/02/08 12:19 am

Teen Republicans...

Even though you seem to have a problem with Mr. Mowers becoming ED doesn't mean all the Teen Republicans do...

and I may be wrong but your not the chairman so you really have no effect over allocation of the members and I know many teenage republicans that would support Mowers being former chairman.

Teens opinions of Mowers

ASJames-

Not even going to address that. Would you prefer i post as xx0Just -like-the-rest-of-my-generation-xx69?

Mower's chairmanship of Teenage Republicans (TARs) is laughed at by most of the teenagers

Many eyes were rolled when Mower's ED position reached our circles, he's bossy and very quick to piss people off.

now that he's in an official position he'll need to watch his words

TeenRepublican201

Yes I would.

01/02/08 1:03 am

I'm going to have to agree

ASharperJames has a point you should speak for your generation. If you think Matt Mowers is such a bad choice maybe you should take all your teen republicans and go. Oh its too bad you'll be the only one leaving. good riddance.

My apologies to Eric

I did not realize you were a college student. Then, you have every right to vote in Bergen while living outside of Bergen.  Your student status was not mentioned in your first post.  While I believe you have mentioned it before, I did not remember that.  Please accept my apologies.

01/02/08 9:32 am

Need a Full Timer

The job of turning around the BCRO is a full time effort.  Unfortunately, it looks as though a young, inexperienced part-timer has been handed the job.    Hey, if you want to watch Matt's high school graduation, here it is:

Keep in mind it was just six months ago.

TeenRepublican201-

Not sure who you are or if you're in our group but Matt did a great job at Cardinale, and our volunteers stayed strong thru the end.

If there were any problems it had more to do with schoolwork and events than Mr. Mowers. We look forward to working with him
