Two New Jersey legislators are among the New Jerseyans who are mourning the death of New York Yankees Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto, who passed away today at age 89. Rizzuto was a longtime resident of Hillside.
"We will all miss the "scooter". He was a 'gentle man', and a great ambassador not only for the sport he loved but for his home State of New Jersey," said Brooklyn-born Assemblyman Joseph Pennacchio, who was a lifetime Yankee fan. "He excelled at everything he did and managed to do it with 'class'. Whether it was on the baseball field, in the broadcast booth, or serving his Country in WWII. My sincerest sympathy goes out to his family, and the millions of fans who mourn his passing."
"Growing up as a Yankee fan while listening to Phil Rizzuto made every game more interesting and funny," said State Sen. Joseph Vitale. "Even during those years when the team dwelled at the bottom of the standings."

Yankees all the way.
Very Sad
I remember back in 1994 and 1995 (his last years) he'd always wish some Grandma in Belleville Happy Birthday, usually resulting in a home run by the Yankees.
Happy Birthday
My favorite Happy Birthday moment was when they were playing Seattle at the Stadium in eiter '95 or '96. They we getting hammered but coincidentally, every time Scooter would announce a birthday, the Yanks would score a run. As we were rallying and made a game of it, Bobby Murcer told him to keep going.
When he finally ran out of birthdays, Murcer told him that his mother's birthday was next March. Scooter later proceeded to announce, "Happy Birthday to Bobby Murcer's mom who will be (I forget how old) next March!"
That was Scooter for you! He always knew how to put a smile on your face.

God Bless
It is a particularly heartbreaking day for my family. In 1990, Mr. Rizzuto was gracious enough to lend his voice and humor as part of my older brother's wedding. My brother, on a whim, sent Mr. Rizzuto a letter and tape asking him to provide the introduction of the wedding party. Not only did Mr. Rizzuto kindly make the tape and send it back, he sent a very warm letter to my brother and sister-in-law, refused any payment for his services, and implored those who were listening to the tape to "Go out and root on those Yankees." My family will be forever grateful. God Bless the Rizzuto family.
God Bless Scooter
I grew up watching Phil Rizzuto play and broadcast. He was the best!!
