Niemann may back down from re-election fight

There is much speculation among Monmouth County Republicans that Frederick Niemann will not seek re-election to a second term as GOP County Chairman. Niemann won the post two years ago when he ousted 17-year incumbent William Dowd. Niemann has been under fire for comments made regarding terrorists, for public statements aimed at circumventing rules regarding fundraising by county organizations, and for the defeat of several candidates perceived to have had his backing at county conventions. Several Republican sources say that Sheriff Joseph Oxley wants to replace him.

I'm not sure if he will do it. While the Monmouth Sheriff's Office gets high marks in the area of service delivery, recent hiring and promotion practices will likely be a major issue for Oxley.

There's little chance in hell Oxley could take out Pallone in a normal year. Why would anyone think he could do it in a year when the GOP Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush?

Oxley would be a much better choice than what my fellows R's in Monmouth have now. It's amazing how many problems the county party has. Unlike Bergen, Monmouth still is a strong Republican county.....

Oxley beating Pallone, no way. It would take a huge scandal for an R to win that district.....

Monmouth is probably the only county in NJ that is moving even further in the GOP direction (i.e. - some NJ counties have always been Republican, but Monmouth is much more solidly GOP that it was in the late 90s and early 00s).

Also, (despite Monmouth being GOP-leaning) Pallone is still well-liked throughout Monmouth, and the Middlesex portion of the district is heavily Dem. Oxley may be able to pluck some of the Monmouth votes away from Pallone (albeit not that many), but he has no chance of doing well in places like New Brunswick and Edison.
