NJEA disses 39th district Republicans

The New Jersey Education Association’s PAC played it pretty safe with its endorsements, choosing mostly incumbents.  But in the 39th district, the union backed an entire slate of Democratic challengers against three Republican incumbents.

“We’re excited and proud that NJEA has agreed to endorse the full slate,” said Jennifer Chirco, the campaign manager for the 39th district Democrats. “We value the association and really appreciate them lending their support

The teachers’ union picked Democrat Joe Ariyan for state Senate, along with Esther Fletcher and Carl Manna for Assembly. Not getting the nod were state Sen. Gerald Cardinale, Assemblyman John Rooney and Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk.

It was no surprise to Rooney. A long time NJEA foe due in part to his opposition to teacher tenure, he threw out the group’s questionnaire upon receipt and chose not to visit with its endorsement panel. Cardinale said he met with the group to “share ideas and thoughts,” but never expected to get their endorsement. Vandervalk, on the other hand, was taken aback.

“I had every indication that they were going to endorse me,” said Vandervalk. “When I left that interview I felt like they had indicated to me that it would happen.”

Unlike her two running mates, Vandervalk has been endorsed by the group before – most recently in 2003. And with her endorsement this year by the AFL-CIO, the NJEA didn’t seem like a far-fetched prospect. Ultimately, she said, the all-Democratic endorsement was likely due to “political pressure.”

Rooney said that it was a “foregone conclusion” that all three Democrats would get the nomination because Fletcher’s husband, Patrick Fletcher, is Superintendent of the River Dell school system.

“I didn’t show up at their thing because I know I’m not going to get endorsed..... Why should I waste my time?” said Rooney.

But Chirco, the campaign manager, called Rooney’s charge “silly,” and noted that Esther Fletcher worked for years as a teacher.

“If you’ve been in office since 1983, if you have a record that supports the issues that are important to NJEA and students throughout the state, then you have no reason not to go before your peers," said Chirco.

Is this news?

A bunch of liberals of which one is a public school teacher got the endorsement of the state's public school teacher's union? Vandervalk should worry a little bit more about courting her base instead of trying to pose herself as a Democrat. The base on 39 is conservative Charlotte. Members of the AFL-CIO will be voting for Ferriero's puppets.

Joe Ariyan

Wait- isnt Joe Ariyan the President of the Fort Lee Republicans? I remember meeting him... did Ferriero buy him off?

39th District is Shortchanged

Perhaps no district is more shorchanged by the current school aid formula than the 39th District. And Cardinale, Rooney, and Vandervalk have actually had the audacity to speak out against the status quo. But the NJEA likes the staus quo just fine which indicates that its interests and the interests of the 39th District do not coincide.

What have Cardinale, et al done for the 39th District?

That's the real question here. Cardinale and Rooney have been representing the 39th since the 80s. Vandervalk for a little less time. That's a lot of time, under both Democratic and Republican Governors and during times when the Rs controlled the legislature as well. You can attack the NJEA and anyone other endorser, but what's the record they are running on?

gotta love the 39th R's

Cardinale just went in there to talk..because he enjoys that alot (Just ask the Entire State Senate). Rooney throws out his questionaire like a nice guy. Poor Charlotte, who is quite the moderate, loses her endorsement. (Could she have been weighed down by Rooney's no show?)

yes..I realize I'm childish for my use of adjectives.

Quite an interesting team there in 39.

By the way one might want to check the vote totals from 05 before they state the 39 is conservative and Vandervalk is out of touch with the base. Tell that to the 2,000 more people who voted for her over Rooney.

That all being said, if I lived in that district Id vote for them all. The last thing they need in Bergen County is more Joe F. finger puppets.

Ft Lee Republican

I could have sworn I met him a few years back and he was the chairman of the Fort Lee Republicans. Are you involved with the Fort Lee Republicans? Could you name the past few chairmen? Or do you work for the Ariyan campaign?

YES!!!!!!!

WE are F.A.M.ily!!!!!! Brothers and Sisters are we!!! BTW: talking about the 39th - how could Gooney, Looney and Rooney sit by and let Pascack Valley Hospital go under when it's less than a mile from Rooney's legislative office? That's enough for now.
