NJEA endorsements

The New Jersey Educational Association Political Action Committee announced their endorsements over the weekend.

The union primarily picked incumbents, except in district 39, where it supported a slate of Democratic challengers against three long-term Republican incumbents.

Here’s a rundown of who the NJEA picked in some competitive races:

District 2: Jim Whelan (D) for state Senate.

District 7: Diane Allen (R) for state Senate, Herb Conaway (D) and Jack Conners (D) for Assembly.

District 8: Dawn Marie Addiego (R) and Scott Rudder (R) for Assembly.

District 12: Ellen Karcher (D) for state Senate, Mike Panter (D) and Amy Mallet (D) for Assembly.

District 14: Bill Baroni (R) for state Senate, Adam Bushman (R) and Linda Greenstein (D) for Assembly.

District 38: Joe Coniglio (D) for state Senate, Robert Gordon (D) and Joan Voss (D) for Assembly.

District 39: Joe Ariyan (D) for state Senate, Esther Fletcher (D) and Carl Manna (D) for Assembly.

Sorry Beck, O'Scanlon and that other lady...

Betcha this is the way it's gonna go for the 12th District GOP straight through the election.

one endorsement is missing

Breaking News  ....it has just been reported that they also endorsed the Taliban in Afganistan this afternoon .

They also said that they dont care  that Aryian  is  only a Ferriero puppet as long as he is against Cardinale,  thats fine with them

Gotta love the NJEA. Losing teachers left and right due to underfunding in the suburbs, S-1701, and the 4% tax levy cap...and they still endorse the status quo. Great job representing your members.

Coniglio bests Beck....

speaks volumes about Beck.

Democrats endorsing Democrats...

and in other news... the sun rose in the East today and will do the same tomorrow.

Yes, they made their token GOP endorsements fully knowing those candidates are going to win and will bow to the NJEA's whims. Sorry Marty0, your Burlington Democrat takeover dreams aren't in the cards.

It's also very telling that they decided to take the moral high ground by standing tall with Joe Coniglio and his hair hat.

Idiots.

NJEA

I have to agree that teachers and their benefits have been under fire recently, it is a bit curious that they went with the endorse incumbants approach.

Teachers Bail on Asselta?

It appears the " Pascoe factor" is begining to take its toll on Union endorsements. When Nick Asselta used to speak for himself he came across as a decent moderate Republican. Now that he is under the control of his far right campaign puppetmaster some for the Unions are beginning to take notice. Asselta will not only lose the election but he will lose his good name.

Addiego and Rudder

This is a curious endorsement from my perspective.
In the 7th, NJEA endorsed all the incumbents - Allen and Conners/Conaway.
In the 8th, where all three seats are open (although turn-coat Asm. Bodine is running for Senate), the NJEA is supporting the Republican challengers of Addiego and Rudder and taking a pass on the Senate race.
So the question is - what has Perr done to help his team? In the 7th, status quo. In the 8th, NJEA endorses the Republican challengers and choose not to endorse Bodine - who has received their endorsement in the past.
The answer appears to be "nothing."
My guess is that Bodine's pension abuse (which gives people in the public pension system a bad name) cost him this endorsement and will likely cost him more.
The Republican ticket wins by 12%.

Wow, endorsing Allen in the 7th and Addiego and Rudder in the 8th. Martin must be in a corner in his blue pajamas sucking his thumb. No not because of the announcement, thats just what he does on Thursday mornings before he drinks his Kool-aid.

Endorsements

As an educator myself, I would consider my interests better served with (mostly) Democratic legislators in Trenton rather than Republicans and encourage all fellow members of unions and fellow teachers to support the challenger in district 7; Dennison, of course, comes from a background of educators and would be a breath of fresh air for public education in the state.

Putting aside the partisan lens for a moment (and I'm glad that I'm a recurring topic of conversation amongst Republicans), is anyone surprised that, in the competitive districts, the legislator who is currently in Trenton and already has a record of some pro-education accomplishments gets the NEA nod? Hence, Baroni over Singh and Allen over Dennison for the endorsements should come as no surprise. And we all know that the wink-wink, nudge-nudge here is that these are moderate Republicans whom the NEA has to not alienate completely and thus gives them a token endorsement in return.

What I find interesting is that in the Karcher-Beck race, both of whom are known quantities and arguably the only Dem senate seat where Republicans have a chance of unseating one of the good guys (or gals), Karcher gets the nod, as does Panter and Mallet. And Whelan got the nod over McCullough in district 2...

Perhaps, if McHose, Doherty, and the rest of the Northwest conservative Republican radicals had their way, public education in the sciences would be replaced with Creationism 101!

Martin

That was a really nice effort in your last post trying to say "better served with mostly Democrats" to sound credible. But when your own personal blog has your statement saying "Stopping the Republican Party and the Radical Right" you become a hypocrit. We all know you are a "flaming" liberal so just stick with that angle. Now go back to sucking your thumb and think of a happy place.

Now Martin Is what?

Ok martin is an educator, union memeber, attorney, doctor, salesman, and everything else! Wow And I love how he throws insult after insult to anyone who endorses a GOP over a democrat. Hence anyone who supports a GOP is somehow nod nod wink wink in colusion with them. What else do you exepct from someone so desperate for any dem to win?? I love it that these unions are the fly in the ointment for him.

Let me guess

Let me guess, more money for Camden and Newark school districts???

08/09/07 2:52 pm

Who are these people?

District 39: Joe Ariyan (D) for state Senate, Esther Fletcher (D) and Carl Manna (D) for Assembly. While I am no political maven of any sort, I must admit that I have never even heard of these characters. I live in District 39 and again, I have never heard of them. I have to suppose they are for more taxation and that is the reason for the NJEA endorsement.

08/09/07 5:18 pm

23rd district

It is interesting that the NJEA has not taken sides in the 23rd district where one of the incumbents has voted no for additional penalties for selling illegal firearms within 1000 ft. of a school. The same Assemblyman has voted against mandatory helmets for children riding scooters and skateboards. He also voted against the local property tax relief of 20% this year. NOW THE BIG QUESTION WHY DID THE NJEA OPENLY SUPPORT THE PEOPLE RUNNING AGAINST HIM?

08/09/07 5:27 pm

NJEA is bankrupting NJ

The NJEA is a primary reason why property taxes are out of control. Teachers in NJ are the highest paid in the namtion with mediocre results in the most affluent of districts and disasterous results in almost every urban district. 180 day work schedules. Contact time with kids less than six hours per day, ridiculous stipend payments for coaching, 100% health and pension benefits and the legislature is bought sold by these morons. When I see an NJEA endorsement, I vote for the other candidate.

Personel Attacks

Why do people who disagree with Martin personally attack him. Madmax asserts that Martin is dumb, well he is thought provoking and informed enough to cause most every GOP commenters on this site to filp over what he says. Martin is clearly informed and is able to articulate what he wants to say. He never gets in the muck with those who attack him personally, I give him credit for keeping the debate going on many issues. Next point-Teachers deserve their pay. I am not a teacher, my wife, or parents or in-laws are not teachers so don't come back at me by saying that I must be a teacher. While teachers do spend around 6 hours teaching in class they spend plenty more at home or in their offices or classrooms grading papers, writting lesson plans, attending dances, games, plays...Teachers in NJ start at around $40,000 per year depending on the district and that is not too much. Teachers cannot be corrupt govt cronies, they must be qualified and credentialed professionals. Furthermore, they have to jump through hoops with all of Bush's failed and underfunded No Child Left Behind non-sense. Money can be saved in Education, but only if towns decide to drop the whole home rule thing and alow for County-wide school districts so we can eliminate administrative costs and needless school boards. While my next comment will draw serious fire I'm going to make it. Taxes are out of control because of local Police Departments. Property taxes could be reduced significantly if municiple police departments were eliminated in this state. State Police and County Sherrifs are more than sufficient and municipal police usually have low entry requirments and are bloated with nepotisism and cronie staff. Looks like teachers are the new scape-goat for high taxes-look again everyone it is, has been, and will forevr be home rule.

Tax Bill

I am proud that my tax bill largest portion is for Education. Better Education is the solution to the political problems that we discuss on this cite on a daily basis. You can blah blah blah me all you want, but you still cant refute my arguments. I never said I believed all of his arguments, I mearly said he has the decency to keep the debate level elevated, I cant say that for everyone on this cite. As for Fred Thompson I hope he runs, he will have the pleasure of being the first man to lose to a woman for President of the United States.
