Not in Carty's party, or, same day different Dawns

After feasting on the Democratic Party in the 8th district general election a week ago, Republicans promptly turned on each other in a continuing family fracas that today brought out a normally under-the-radar Republican operative who lit into Assemblywoman-elect Dawn Marie Addiego.

Irritated by Acting Party Chairwoman Dawn Lacy's post Election Day firing of two campaign strategists, Addiego on Tuesday issued a staunch-the-bleeding letter to Evesham Republicans in which she praised the "leadership" of Campaign Chairman Bill Layton and Campaign Manager Chris Russell - and ripped Lacy.

"I have never been involved in a campaign where the staff, who won the day, was treated in such a disrespectful and disgraceful manner," Addiego wrote. "This was not only uncalled for, but also a slap in the face to everyone who participated in our election. In fact, it was Senator-elect Haines, Assemblyman-elect Rudder, Sheriff Stanfield, Freeholder-elect Donnelly and myself, who hired Bill Layton and Chris Russell, not the acting-chairwoman."

Addiego noted that despite being outspent by at least two to one, the GOP produced its biggest win since 1991, and prevented an incursion onto Burlington soil by the fearsome Camden County Democratic Party.

But campaign worker Jason Carty, a 30-year old union fireman and Lacy backer who spearheaded the Republicans' GOTV efforts in the 8th district, issued his own letter in response, depicting the assemblywoman-elect as a vain and unwilling campaigner.

Carty also revealed his own particular campaign season disregard for Layton, a close friend and confidant of GOP boss and former party chairman Glenn Paulsen.

Since Lacy fired Russell and Layton and seized the party's financial records for an independent review, Paulsen's made it clear he wants to replace Lacy with Layton as the party's county chairman.

Layton wants the job - but Carty said he'd be a poor replacement for Lacy.

"In your letter you talk about the campaign staff ‘being treated in a disrespectful and disgusting manner'," Carty wrote to Addiego. "The only disrespect and slap in the face I received was from Bill Layton himself with his constant name-calling and disrespectful manner. He constantly referred to you and every other woman (mostly elected officials) as names I care not to repeat."

The strongly union-affiliated Carty said the campaign staff was generally dismayed by Layton, but tolerated him for fear of reprisals from Paulsen. He also questioned the influence Layton wielded during the campaign.

"The majority of our ‘volunteers' were provided by organized labor organizations," Carty wrote. "Mr. Layton did not ‘motivate volunteers.' If it was not for Phil (Haines) being on the ballot bringing the surge of union involvement and the volunteers recruited by the candidates/local organizations then we would not have been able to execute our GOTV plan that Mr. Layton likes to take credit for."

A redevelopment consultant who also runs a trade association, Layton has known Paulsen since 1994. He said he never assumed the posture of party savior and denies he was rude.

"A lot of people worked hard," he said. "Jason worked extremely hard on the campaign. Dawn knows how hard they all worked. But Jason was at times rude and abrasive towards the candidates. He disrespected people. It's unfortunate, but I had to put him in his place. My role was to make sure he was respectful."

Layton said he believes Carty is being used by Lacy to discredit him so that she can maintain power and block his appointment as party chairman.

"We ran one of the most aggressive campaigns both in terms of message and in fund-raising," Layton said. "When Jason discredits me, he discredits himself."

Layton said nearly 60 county chairs have signed their names to a petition demanding that Lacy schedule a meeting for a vote to be held for a new county chairperson.

"Anything less than that would be a slap to democracy," said Layton. "It is an abuse of discretion by Dawn Lacy to think she's been elected to anything."

Subsequent to the GOP's disastrous showing in Evesham's municipal election earlier this year and a muscle flexing exercise by Democrats as they audaciously fielded former Republican Fran Bodine as their district 8 senate candidate, the party in July appointed Lacy to serve as acting party chair upon the resignation of Mike Warner.

Now the boss wants her out of there.

Like Carty, Lacy proved a rebel presence for the Paulsen allies. The acting chair's recalcitrance in part involved her questions regarding Paulsen's control of the party's finances. But it also went to the issue of the campaign's style. When Russell's Traz Group dropped an attack mailer in the general election, going after the husband of Democratic Assembly candidate Tracy Reilly because he accepted a court appointment to represent an alleged terrorist, Carty and Lacy bristled. They kept their mouths shut then for the sake of the party but looking back on the campaign, Carty calls the mail piece a big gigantic softball pitched to an already sagging Democratic team.

"It ended up affecting the votes and the turnout," said Carty. "I had a lot of Republicans tell me during the campaign that they were offended by that mail piece."

Russell today stood by it.

"Whatever people think about the mailer, one thing is indisputable," said the campaign manager. "After the mailer, her (Tracy Reilly's) campaign was about being a victim and playing defense for the last two weeks of the campaign. She let that mailer throw her off. Whatever message she had was lost as she allowed the mailer to completely derail her campaign."

At least one other Burlington County voice emerged Tuesday in support of Carty and Lacy, and that was Jon Shevelew, mayor of Shamong Township, who also fired off a letter to Addiego on the heels of Carty's transmission.

"In your statement of 'unconditional support' for Mr. Layton you refer to his skills at raising funds, motivating volunteers, etc.," Shevelew wrote. "Yet he has left the party with a significant six figure debt (borrowing is not fund-raising) and the disenfranchisement of numerous volunteers who he apparently treated with the same disdain and disrespect that he expressed regarding the candidates, based on the feedback I've seen from those workers."

Shevelew chastised Addiego for entrenching herself in the Paulsen faction in a developing war between Paulsen and Layton on the one side and district 7 Sen. Diane Allen and Lacy on the other.

Discouraged by post-election party meltdown in what she said should be a celebratory atmosphere, and frustrated by what appears to be a deepening divide in her party, Addiego said that in singling out Russell and Layton for praise today, she never meant to disrespect any of the campaign volunteers.

"Just yesterday I ordered five gift baskets for campaign staff," said the assemblywoman-elect, "including one for Jason.

"In a highly charged and emotional campaign, we all had our moments," Addiego added. "Were things said to me that I didn't like? Yes. But everyone was working hard. Regardless of my personal feelings, the right thing to do was to get these baskets."

How many county chairs?

There are 40 towns in Burlington County, which means 40 municipal chairs - not 60, or 300, as was cited in a story a few days ago. Half of those towns are so small (Fieldsboro, Washington, Bass River, Wrightstown, and Pemberton Borough have just one precinct each) or they are so Democratic (most of Willingboro's 80 committee seats are empty on the primary ballot) that their municipal chairs have little influence in the party anyway. I was on the Burlco Republican Committee a few years ago, but I gave up my seat because the committee met just twice a year, and conducted no business. Paulsen was the boss, and the committee as a whole was symbolic. So it is understandable that the party - despite its success - is fracturing. Paulsen seemed to enjoy being disliked by his own committee members.

Won't get my vote again!

I am insulted at the audacity of Assemblywoman Elect Addiego and her insinuations directed at the volunteers of her campaign and her comments against Dawn Lacy and her support of Layton.

You have no idea Ms. Addiego the comments and spew I and others dodged while placing your campaingn signs in our yards and making phone calls on your behalf.  I was offended with some of the "truths" I learned about your indiscretions but still believed in you on my behalf and convinced others to believe in you your accomplishments and most importantly what you represented for woman in the Republican party.

You have demonstrated what a weak woman you are and more importantly unfortunately what a weak leader I will have in the Assembly.

You have lost my vote and you better believe just as I convinced people vote the ticket including you, I will in shame inform them the next time around to vote for the best person and we know that won't be you!

Take your fruit baskets and indulge/engorge yourself, you appear to be full of sh*t so this will help!

Oh, the irony...

"He disrespected people. It's unfortunate, but I had to put him in his place. My role was to make sure he was respectful."

Looks like those words may be coming back to haunt you, Layton.

Besides, everyone around the state knows you role was to do whatever Paulsen told you to. You are an empty suit.

"Anything less than that would be a slap to democracy," said Layton. "It is an abuse of discretion by Dawn Lacy to think she's been elected to anything."

Actually, she was unanimously elected as vice chair. Go next door and ask Paulsen, he'll tell you--he gave an eloquent nominating speech on her behalf, just before the vote. While you are there, ask him about the by-laws he wrote...he'll tell you she's the rightful acting chair.

He'll probably also tell you not to let Adiego talk in public anymore...the gift basket comment was laughable.

Sounds like a bunch of YRs

Sounds like a bunch of YRs "Young Republicans" acting outside of their pay grade.

Why is anyone still using the Traz Group for anything??  The only time that guy gets any press is when his house burns down.

A vote for Paulsen, is a vote for Law & Order.  Keep Norcross out of Burlington County!

end of the day, its still GOP

Can you argue with the operatives that held the GOP seats in Burlington while the rest of South Jersey was turning Dem?

Sounds like an Old Drunk

lay off the beer and have some more of that Paulsen kool-aid.

Paulsen has fantasies....

I gotta say that Carty's got a point. The republican machine does itself discredit when it puts losers like Layton in charge. He couldn't campaign his way out of a wet paper bag and without the labor ground game, the R candidates couldn't have won - or won as big. That had nothing to do with Layton, who did no outreach and no ground work. Really, if we Dems can't find enjoyment in watching this soap opera, who can?

11/13/07 11:26 pm

I take offense..

"Sounds like a bunch of YRs "Young Republicans" acting outside of their pay grade."

Young Republicans get along a whole better than these people...we don't bicker like a bunch of drama queens.

Not to worry, my friend, let Camdenbeer enjoy "last call" on the kool-aid, they're almost out and they can't pay the tab.

This is Getting Personal

You guys in the Burlington County GOP need to work this out pronto before you go past the point of no return and lose control of the court house.

11/14/07 8:26 am

Look Nero

no offense, but it's the middle of November and there is plenty of time to work this out in due course. The only seat we've ever lost is the Surrogate; and that is a text-book example of what happens when there is a panic and hollow threats are taken seriously. I know a good upstanding Republican lawyer who would have been your Surrogate today if a few didn't panic at threats from an old skirt-chasing surfer. (Who's looking for work, BTW.)

11/14/07 9:11 am

Did you read the above article?

The longer this goes on, the more personal it is going to get and there are some wounds that even time won't heal. The longer this drags on, the harder it will be for unity.

The time and energy you guys are spending fighting each other, would be better spent party building and fundraising. I wouldn't want to see Burlington go the way of Gloucester, Passiac or Bergen Counties.

I wouldn't be so dismissive, Burlington County could easily end up in the Democrat's hands.

Just my 2 cents.

By-Laws

Don't you folks have by-laws to cover this. I am sure that there is protocal. I am also sure that Glenn, Layton Russell and others just shoved Dawn L. aside before the election. She should be commended for not doing this before the Election and throwing their sorry butts out. If I am correct, she is the Chair until June '08 and has all the power that was afforded Mr. Warner as Party Chairman. Poor Glenn you wrote the by-laws you know Dawn L. is in charge and unless you have 35 of the 40 Municipal Chairs voting her out your screwed. You wrote the by-laws to avert an overthrow when you were chair so you should know.

11/14/07 9:39 am

C'mon

The week of the League is supposed to be off limits, how can I enjoy myself in AC when you guys and continue on with this BS.

BTW who is Jon Shevelew and why should I care?

11/14/07 9:49 am

Layton/Addiego perfect together

Layton's quote in this story shows that he thinks being chairman is his birth right.  Layton is bad for the GOP.  Addiego is just lucky Haines coat tails are long.

11/14/07 11:41 am

I don't believe I am saying this,

There is something we agree on:

"The only seat we've ever lost is the Surrogate; and that is a text-book example of what happens when there is a panic and hollow threats are taken seriously. I know a good upstanding Republican lawyer who would have been your Surrogate today if a few didn't panic at threats from an old skirt-chasing surfer."

This happened under Warner's tenure and again makes the case as to why we as a Party need to continue our winning ways and forget about the debacle of 2006.

11/14/07 1:03 pm

whoyoukiddin has it right except....

Glenn did such a great job on those by-laws that even if all 40 chairs wanted to vote her out they couldn't.  They can only ask her to have a meeting, she is the only one who can actually call it.  Why do you think they are so desperate?

She is the chair until June '08 which also means that she will control the candidate selection process for next year's elections.  I hear that Glenn has promised at least 4 people freeholder seats for next year.  He's like mel brooks' producers.  Let's sell 400% of the show.  In this case, he doesn't even own the show but he's hoping that nobody notices.

These guys are getting the typical Paulson dupe job.  When he's not promising seats, he's threatening and extorting them.  With all the tough guys around heading for their holes, Dawn L. has stood up and said enough of his crap.  Let's do it right!

Good for her.  Evil can only triumph if good people do nothing.  Lacy's taken the right step to stop the evil.

Now let's see if all those tough guys have any b*lls. Or if they're going to all turn into Phil Haines clones, "OOOOPPPs, they fooled me.  I didn't know I would actually have to take a stand and tell people that Paulson is corrupt and I won't associate with corruption."  Hey Phil, if you can be "mislead" that easily how the hell are you going to manage in the Senate with real political issues?  We all thought you were pretty smart and sophisticated.  Were we wrong?

11/14/07 5:28 pm

Camdenbeer needs to stay in Camden

Get your facts straight pal.

First - Paulson and his hack Layton hired the Traz Group.

Second - You can't vote for Paulson because he's not running for anything.  Only his puppet Layton.

Third - There's no difference between Paulson and Norcross.  Don't you think Paulson cuts deals with Norcross so they can both make money?  What company has the county's insurance?  They are both pigs and we need to keep both of them out of our county.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Addiego

the best part of Addiego's letter is she did not even write it.  In the word document she sent out it shows in "properties" of the document that Ed Waters wrote it.  Waters is a former 8th dist employee turned lobbyist.
