Senator Kevin O’Toole (R-40) issued the following statement in response to a ruling made today by the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) forbidding former-Senator Wayne Bryant from using campaign funds for legal expenses related to his indictment on criminal charges of bribery, fraud and corruption:
“ELEC correctly ruled today that it is not appropriate to use campaign funds to pay for legal expenses related to alleged criminal activities by elected officials.
“To further ensure that the use of campaign funds for criminal legal defense is not even a question in the future, I will introduce legislation that explicitly prohibits the use of campaign funds for that purpose.”
Senator O’Toole will introduce legislation identical to A-965 which has been introduced in the General Assembly.
